UK man obsessed with James Bond convicted of trying to spy for Russia
London
A British man who 'dreamt about being like James Bond' has been found guilty of trying to spy for what he believed to be Russian intelligence service agents.
The 65-year-old man intended to help two apparent Russian agents called 'Sasha' and 'Dima,' including by passing on personal information about former defence secretary Grant Shapps, helping with travel logistics and booking hotels.
But 'Dima' and 'Sasha' were in fact undercover British intelligence officers, Winchester Crown Court previously heard.
A jury found the man guilty of assisting a foreign intelligence service under the National Security Act on Tuesday, following a two-week trial at the same court.
The jury reached a unanimous verdict after four hours and four minutes of deliberations.
The man, wearing a dark suit and tie, silently shook his head in the dock as the verdict was given.Prosecutors said he intended to assist Russian agents from the end of 2023 until May last year.
He offered to pass on Shapps' contact details as well as the location where he kept his private plane in order to 'facilitate the Russians in listening on British defence plans,' the trial heard.
He was heard telling the men he wanted to work for Russia in exchange for financial independence from the UK.
The defendant's ex-wife told the court during the trial that he 'would dream about being like James Bond,' and that he watched films to do with MI5 and MI6 as he was 'infatuated with it.'
The ex-wife told the court she was aware the defendant had applied for a job at the UK Border Force in October 2023, which prosecutors said was part of his bid to assist Russia's intelligence service.
The man previously claimed he had contacted the Russian embassy in early 2024 in a bid to track and expose Russian agents to assist Israel.
He told jurors he ascertained 'from the onset' that 'Dima' and 'Shasha' were 'definitely not Russian' and were undercover individuals, but that he carried on 'playing a role' around these agents in order to 'test the waters.'
Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb remanded the man in custody and adjourned sentencing to the 'earliest available date' in the autumn. The judge said she wanted a full pre-sentence report on the defendant ahead of sentencing as the conviction was for a 'relatively new' offence.
Addressing the jurors, she said: 'Thank you very much for the important work that you have done on this very important case. We are trying, as a system, to get to the right answers in these situations.'

1,200 POWs to be exchanged with Russia, says Zelensky
DPA Moscow Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday confirmed a previously discussed prisoner-of-war (POW) exchange with Russia, which had already mentioned the swap. Zelensky, in a post on Telegram, said a list of 1,200 names was being worked on. Russian negotiators had mentioned that figure during direct talks with their Ukrainian counterparts in Istanbul on July 23, while the Ukrainians did not release a number then. Following a meeting with Ukrainian lead negotiator Rustem Umerov, Zelensky said that the exchange would include civilians as well as soldiers. He added that preparations for another meeting with the Russian side were proceeding, without mentioning a date. At the end of July, Zelensky said that a total of 5,857 people had been returned to Ukraine from Russian captivity since the full-scale Russian invasion in February 2022. An additional 555 people had been freed apart from the exchanges, he reported on X. The two sides released prisoners most recently in July, concluding a phased exchange agreed in Istanbul at the end of June of 1,200 on each side. The total number of prisoners on both sides remains unknown and is constantly changing. There have also been repeated exchanges. The unconditional and comprehensive ceasefire called for by Ukraine at the Istanbul talks is not in sight. Moscow has instead offered brief truces for both sides to collect their fallen andinjured along the frontline. Among Russian preconditions for a comprehensive ceasefire is that Western arms deliveries to Ukraine must be halted.

Hundreds of Gaza children to be brought to UK for treatment
PA Media/dpa London Up to 300 children could be evacuated from Gaza and given medical treatment in the UK. The plans are reportedly set to be announced within weeks. A parent or guardian will accompany each child, as well as siblings if necessary, and the UK Home Office will carry out biometric and security checks before travel, the Sunday Times reported. This will happen 'in parallel' with an initiative by Project Pure Hope, a group set up to bring sick and injured Gazan children to the UK privately for treatment. More than 50,000 children are estimated to have been killed or injured in Gaza since October 2023, according to UNICEF. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said last week that the UK was 'urgently accelerating' efforts to bring children over for treatment. A government spokesperson said: 'We are taking forward plans to evacuate more children from Gaza who require urgent medical care, including bringing them to the UK for specialist treatment where that is the best option for their care. 'We are working at pace to do so as quickly as possible, with further details to be set out in due course.' The UK and Jordan have been working together to air drop aid amid warnings of widespread malnourishment in Gaza. It comes as the UK seeks to put pressure on Israel to change course with a plan to recognise a Palestinian state in September ahead of the UN General Assembly. Starmer has said the Unied Kingdom would only refrain from recognising Palestine if Israel allows more aid into Gaza, stops annexing land in the West Bank, agrees to a ceasefire and signs up to a long-term peace process over the next two months. Concerns have been raised this could see a Palestinian state recognised by the UK without Hamas releasing the remaining Israeli hostages.

Russia, China begin joint military drills in Sea of Japan
Agencies Moscow China and Russia have begun joint naval drills in the Sea of Japan as they seek to reinforce their partnership and counterbalance what they see as a United States-led global order. The Chinese and Russian governments have deepened their ties in recent years, with China providing an economic lifeline to Russia in the face of Western sanctions over Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. The Joint Sea-2025 exercises began in waters near the Russian port of Vladivostok and will last for three days, China's Ministry of National Defence said in a statement on Sunday. The two sides will hold 'submarine rescue, joint anti-submarine, air defence and anti-missile operations, and maritime combat'. Four Chinese vessels, including guided-missile destroyers Shaoxing and Urumqi, are participating in the exercises, alongside Russian ships, the ministry said. After the drills, the two countries will conduct naval patrols in 'relevant waters of the Pacific'. China and Russia have carried out annual drills for several years, with the 'Joint Sea' exercises beginning in 2012. Last year's drills were held along China's southern coast. With this year's drills in the Sea of Japan, in its annual report last month, Japan's Ministry of Defence warned that China's growing military cooperation with Russia poses serious security concerns. 'The exercise is defensive in nature and is not directed against other countries,' the Russian Navy Pacific Fleet said earlier this week, according to a report by the US Naval Institute's online news and analysis portal. On Friday, the Chinese Defence Ministry said this year's exercises were aimed at 'further deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership' of the two countries. China has never denounced Russia's more than three-year war nor called for it to withdraw its troops, and many of Ukraine's allies, including the US, believe that Beijing has provided support to Moscow. European leaders asked China last month to use its influence to pressure Russia to end the war, now in its fourth year, but there was no sign that Beijing would do so. China, however, insists it is a neutral party, regularly calling for an end to the fighting while also accusing Western countries of prolonging the conflict by arming Ukraine.
