Surviving Black Hawk Down: True story behind Ridley Scott film and hit Netflix docuseries

Independent13-02-2025

Ridley Scott 's 2001 war film Black Hawk Down divided critics when it was first released in the wake of the 9/11 attacks. The gritty action movie, which features a star-studded cast including Josh Hartnett, Ewan McGregor and Eric Bana, depicted true events from 1993's Battle of Mogadishu in Somalia and became a box office success, as well as winning Oscars for editing and sound.
However, it was also criticized in some quarters for playing fast and loose with the facts. Ken Nolan's screenplay streamlined Mark Bowden's 1999 book Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War down to feature film length, and was accused of whitewashing the real story. In a 2002 article for The Independent, Repo Man director Alex Cox questioned why the deaths of Somali citizens had been overlooked and pointed out that McGregor's character had been renamed after the real-life GI was convicted of raping a 12-year-old girl.
The new three-part series Surviving Black Hawk Down, produced by Scott's own production company Ridley Scott Associates and directed by Jack MacInnes, revisits the Battle of Mogadishu through a documentary lens and invites both American and Somali survivors to recall and describe the events in their own words.
The battle, which saw two Black Hawk helicopters crash out of the sky, took place on October 3 and 4 1993 but its origins can be traced back to the start of the Somali civil war.
The late 1980s had been a time of political unrest in the country, and President Siad Barre's authoritarian regime would eventually fall in 1991. The following year, food shortages and severe drought led to mass starvation and famine. United Nations peacekeepers were sent into the country, but soon found themselves clashing with Somali National Alliance leader Mohamed Farrah Aidid. The US military launched Operation Gothic Serpent to capture Aidid, who they considered a rogue warlord.
At the start of October 1993, American forces were dispatched to Mogadishu in pursuit of Aidid and his lieutenants, but his militia fought back.
After a pair of Black Hawk helicopters were shot down, what had been intended to be a military strike was transformed into a messy rescue mission. As Bowden wrote in his book: 'Insurgents shot down two American Black Hawk helicopters with rocket-propelled grenades. When about 90 US Rangers and Delta Force operators rushed to the rescue, they were caught in an intense exchange of gunfire and trapped overnight."
The rescue was far from smooth. As The Independent correspondent Steve Bloomfield wrote later: 'Eighteen US Army Rangers were killed in the firefight that followed. Their broken bodies were dragged through Mogadishu's battle-scarred streets. An estimated 1,000 Somalis died that day too, although they didn't get a Hollywood film made about them.'
As heroic as Scott's film attempted to portray the incident, most remember it as a disastrous debacle. Surviving Black Hawk Down goes some way to try to redress that imbalance, featuring interviews with Mogadishu residents who found themselves trapped in the war zone and local militiamen as well as the Army Rangers and Delta Force soldiers they fought against.
Among those interviewed is Saido Mohamed, a Mogadishu resident whose home was taken over by US soldiers seeking shelter from Aidid's militia. She gives a harrowing testimony that stretches across two episodes, recalling her fears of both the Americans who invaded her home and the Somali fighters who surrounded it.
Soldiers on both sides are frank about the violence they meted out. One American soldier recalls deciding to 'kill everybody that I could see that was hostile or acting hostile in any way. I don't think my finger came off the trigger for very long at all.' A Somali fighter says: 'The fall of the helicopter was the happiest moment I ever had,' and adds: 'My gun never had a rest.'
There was little glory in what happened next, either. In the aftermath of the Battle of Mogadishu, US troops pulled out of the country and the rest of the UN peacekeeping mission followed soon after. As Bloomfield noted: 'Somalia was left to slide back into anarchy.'

Love Island fans say same thing after 'chaotic' teaser as 'drama' hits villa

Love Island 2025 viewers were left excited about Wednesday's episode of the ITV2 series after a tomorrow night teaser revealed things get steamy and no doubt dramatic It looks like Love Island is heating up just days in, as following the first exit of the series there's two new bombshells. Not only that but a tomorrow night teaser hinted at new drama, new romance and plenty of "chaos". Viewers watching the clip narrated by Iain Stirling at the end of Tuesday's episode were thrilled, saying "we're so back". ‌ Viewers are now excited to see Wednesday's visit to the villa, after host Maya Jama returned to the famous compound in the latest episode to send Sophie Lee packing. There's two new boys on the way, and soon a drinking game stirs things up. ‌ There seems to be a game of dares or something similar, and soon enough the Islanders are locking lips with people they are not currently paired up with. There's gasps, unimpressed faces and plenty of carnage judging by a short clip that aired. Viewers couldn't wait to see the scenes in full, taking to X to share their excitement. It seems Megan gets cosy with someone, leaving her partner Tommy not too happy just a day on from them sharing a kiss. Harry also seems bothered about something, while Alima shares a kiss with a bombshell - leaving fans hoping she may get with a new man after things became awkward with Blu. With Blu expressing an interest in Shakira on Tuesday, fans are hoping he'll be ditched very soon. As for the teaser clip for Wednesday, fans said they were ready for the "drama" and "chaos". One viewer posted: "Tomorrow's episode is looking chaotic." Another said: "We are so back," as a third added: "ROLL ON TOMORROW NIGHT!!!!!!!" A fourth fan posted: "Finally some good looking guys and some drama, tomorrow is looking good," while another wrote: "That tomorrow night omds. Yeah this season is going to be a top one." ‌ Another comment read: "TOMORROW NIGHT LOOKING GOOODDDD." It comes after Sophie was axed from the show in the latest episode. Despite not initially being at risk of an early exit, the motivational speaker and author was abruptly booted out of the villa after her man Harry was chosen by newly single Shakira. It was Shakira who had been told by host Maya Jama in the previous episode that she could be leaving within hours. Shakira had just 24 hours to woo another man, after her partner Ben was stolen by American bombshell Toni. As the 22 year old, who works in marketing, got grafting she soon had to choose a man to pair up with. ‌ But there was a catch, and the boys had to agree to couple up with her. As the time came on Tuesday night, host Maya was back in the villa ready for the proceedings. She asked the boys if any of them wanted to ditch their current girl for Shakira, meaning their partners would be at risk of being dumped. Three boys stood up, leaving their current girls rattled. Blu, Conor and Harry all chose to opt for Shakira, knowing full well she'd only be able to pick one of them. It wasn't an easy choice, more so because she knew, as clarified by Maya, that the girl left single would be going home instead of her. ‌ With the three boys standing, Shakira's fate was sealed. It was then Helena, Alima and Sophie who were at risk. It came down to Shakira choosing out of the three boys, with some encouragement from Maya. Maya urged the Islander to remember why she was here, no doubt trying to lessen her panic over sending a girl home but also so she would make the right choice. With that, Shakira named Harry as the man she wanted to steal. Sophie was immediately dumped from the villa as a result, as Maya confirmed she was now single and would be leaving the show.

Love Island announce two new boys as heartbroken star sent home in huge twist

Love Island have announced two new singletons for this series. The new season kicked off on Monday, but this year's singles haven't had the chance to get comfortable in their couples, as ITV producers quickly started sending in bombshells left, right, and centre. The girls were the first to come under fire as American pool party waitress Antonia Laites entered the villa and immediately stole Shakira's man. This left her vulnerable to being dumped from the island, so she soon had to start chatting up the other girls' partners in a last-ditch attempt to save herself before the next firepit ceremony. However, now it is the men on the show who have had the pressure put on them as two new bombshells have entered the villa and are ready to crack on with their girls, following the devastating dumping of Sophie Lee. Here is what we know about the new lads... Shea, 25, from Bristol, said he is looking for someone bubbly, who's got "that spark". Unlike some of the other boys in the villa, this one is not looking to mess around. Shea wants to find a good girl with a "nice personality" to get serious with. It's also very important to him that she will be understanding of the important role his young son plays in his life. The scaffolder, who admits he spends most mornings in the gym, added: "I am ready again to look for something more serious. I'm 25 now, so I want to be settling down and have someone always by my side." Although Shea is looking for a wifey, his single days are not far behind him. When asked what he would be the boss of, he didn't hesitate to say "pulling girls". The cheeky gym buff added: "I'm confident to go up and introduce myself and say, 'You look beautiful', to get a conversation flowing." Essex-based content creator Remell, 24, wants to meet someone who is "bubbly, confident, ambitious and fun". He admitted he easily gets bored of being with the same person, so girls on the island better look out, because his head might be quickly turned. Remell joked that a film based on his love life up until now would be called "Once a Player, Not Always a Player", adding: "I'm the CEO of flirting. Sometimes it's just unintentional." The self improvement guru also opened up about his high standards, saying he needs a woman who can "stimulate him mentally" and his biggest ick is someone with no ambition or goals. He shared: "If I can't talk to a woman and pick her brain, have some discussion, that's a huge turn off for me as where are we going to be going?" The two new boys were introduced to the villa moments after the other Islanders were left devastated by Sophie's exit. The motivational speaker from Manchester was axed from the show after Shakira decided to steal her man in order to remain in the villa, so the bombshells have got some cheering up to do. .
