Top Boy actor Micheal Ward charged with rape

Bafta-winning actor Micheal Ward, known for roles in shows and films including Top Boy, Small Axe and Blue Story, has been charged with rape. Mr Ward, 27, of Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, is charged with two counts of rape and three counts of sexual assault, the Metropolitan Police said. The alleged offences relate to one woman and are reported to have taken place in January 2023, according to the force. The actor won the Rising Star award at the Baftas in 2020 and was nominated for best supporting actor for Small Axe the following year. He also starred in 2022 film Empire of Light, and will be seen in the forthcoming Eddington. He is due to appear at Thames Magistrates' Court in London on 28 August. The Met's Det Supt Scott Ware said: "Our specialist officers continue to support the woman who has come forward - we know investigations of this nature can have significant impact on those who make reports."

Record numbers sign up for popular Southend Triathlon

RECORD numbers signed up for the Southend Triathlon. This year's event marked a significant milestone in the race's history, with more than 320 athletes registering across all categories — the highest number in recent years and a clear sign the event is well and truly back on the rise. Despite challenging sea conditions and patchy weather, more than 220 athletes made it to the start line and delivered some phenomenal performances. Some 153 tackled the sprint distance and 69 braved the full Olympic course. In a bold step forward, new aqua bike and relay categories debuted with strong participation and great feedback, laying the foundation for even bigger fields in 2026. 'Triathletes are a different breed and when the weather throws curveballs, they don't flinch – they rise,' said the RTC Events team. 'We saw effort, emotion, and extraordinary community spirit out there. Southend showed up, and the atmosphere was electric.' Now firmly establishing itself as one of the UK's most iconic coastal races, the Southend Triathlon continues to offer something for everyone — from first-timers to seasoned competitors chasing new PBs. Jon Brown, of the JBR Run & Tri Club, said: 'We're massively proud of what we delivered this year. 'We had a few teething problems but as new organisers of the event I think we are heading in the right direction. 'What stood out most was the energy, the smiles, the commitment. 'Seeing first-timers finish alongside seasoned athletes — that's what this event is about. 'We've got big plans for 2026 and we're just getting started. 'A very big thank you to all that took part and supported the event and to all of our wonderful marshals and volunteers whom without we couldn't put this event together.'
