XOM vs. CVX vs. COP: Which Oil Stock Is Wall Street's Best Pick in this Volatile Market?

XOM vs. CVX vs. COP: Which Oil Stock Is Wall Street's Best Pick in this Volatile Market?

Business Insider5 hours ago

Oil prices fell for the second straight day on Tuesday as a ceasefire between Israel and Iran eased supply concerns and reversed the rally in oil stocks that was triggered when the conflict between the two countries began earlier this month. Oil prices might continue to be volatile, given geopolitical tensions and macro uncertainties. Bearing this backdrop in mind, we used TipRanks' Stock Comparison Tool to place Exxon Mobil (XOM), Chevron (CVX), and ConocoPhillips (COP) against each other to find the best oil stock despite the ongoing volatility, according to Wall Street analysts.
Confident Investing Starts Here:
Exxon Mobil (NYSE:XOM) Stock
Energy giant Exxon Mobil's first-quarter earnings surpassed analysts' expectations but declined compared to the prior-year quarter due to lower oil prices amid fears that macro uncertainty and tariffs under the Trump administration would hit global demand. Nonetheless, higher volumes in the Permian Basin and Guyana and Exxon's cost reduction measures helped mitigate the impact of weak prices on earnings. Notably, Exxon Mobil's acquisition of Pioneer Natural has bolstered its position in the Permian Basin.
Meanwhile, the company continues to reward shareholders with attractive returns. In Q1 2025, Exxon returned $9.1 billion to shareholders through $4.3 billion in dividends and $4.8 billion in share repurchases. XOM stock offers a dividend yield of 3.5%.
Is Exxon Stock a Buy, Sell, or Hold?
Recently, TD Cowen analyst Jason Gabelman reiterated a Buy rating on Exxon Mobil stock and increased the price target to $128 from $120, citing higher near-term earnings. Following investor meetings with management, the analyst stated that the company reiterated its potential to achieve a 10% annual earnings growth from 2024 to 2030 from de-risked projects. Gabelman noted that Exxon is satisfied with its current portfolio after executing $24 billion divestments since 2019.
Gabelman said that XOM stock remains a top pick, given its clear earnings growth from differentiated projects that support stable and growing cash returns in a variety of price backdrops. He highlighted that Exxon continues to differentiate itself from peers by pursuing projects where it is the operator, in contrast to the past, when it would partner with other international oil companies to derisk its portfolio.
Overall, Wall Street has assigned Exxon Mobil stock a Moderate Buy consensus rating based on eight Buys and six Holds. The average XOM stock price target of $123.14 indicates 13.7% upside potential. XOM stock is almost flat year-to-date.
Chevron (NYSE:CVX) Stock
Oil and gas giant Chevron slightly exceeded the Street's earnings expectations in Q1 2025, though EPS declined year-over-year as the company's upstream business was hit by lower oil prices. The bottom line was also impacted by a decline in refining margins on a year-over-year basis.
Meanwhile, Chevron said that it plans to make repurchases in the range of $2.5 billion to $3 billion in Q2 2025, marking a slowdown from the $3.9 billion worth of stock bought back in the first quarter. That said, the company reaffirmed its full-year buybacks target of $10 billion to $20 billion. Coming to dividends, with a quarterly dividend of $1.71, CVX stock offers a dividend yield of 4.6%.
All eyes are now on the final decision on the arbitration case with Exxon Mobil regarding Chevron's proposed acquisition of Hess Corporation. The case is focused on the applicability of Exxon Mobil's right of first refusal (ROFR) on Hess's 30% stake in the lucrative Stabroek block, which is part of Chevron's $53 billion acquisition of Hess.
Is CVX a Buy, Hold, or Sell?
Recently, Barclays analyst Betty Jiang reiterated a Hold rating on Chevron stock with a price target of $152. Considering Chevron's organic growth since 2023, Jiang believes that the Hess Corporation is now modestly accretive to the energy giant's cash flow multiples and leverage, but still dilutive on free cash flow yield.
Jiang sees balanced risk/reward around the arbitration outcome related to the Hess acquisition.
Overall, Chevron stock earns a Moderate Buy consensus rating based on 10 Buys, six Holds, and two Sell recommendations. The average CVX stock price target of $159.50 indicates 11.1% upside potential. CVX stock is flat on a year-to-date basis.
ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) Stock
COP stock has declined about 10% so far this year due to market challenges and concerns about the impact on demand due to a potential slowdown. ConocoPhillips delivered market-beating first-quarter results, as the impact of lower oil prices was offset by higher production, supported by the Marathon Oil acquisition.
ConocoPhillips distributed $2.5 billion to shareholders in Q1 2025, including $1.5 billion via share repurchases and $1.0 billion through dividends. COP stock offers a dividend yield of 3.3%.
Given a volatile macro backdrop, ConocoPhillips reduced its full-year capital expenditure and operating cost guidance.
Is COP a Good Stock to Buy Now?
Earlier this month, Citi analyst Alastair Syme lowered the price target for ConocoPhillips stock to $115 from $140 but reiterated a Buy rating. The 4-star analyst highlighted two reasons for COP stock's underperformance: investor skepticism toward the Marathon Oil acquisition and the decision to increase unit capital intensity by 25% to fund growth. However, Syme views the Marathon deal as a strategic move that will extend the life and improve the efficiency of existing assets. He expects the consolidation in the maturing shale plays to reduce costs and optimize capital allocation and bolster COP's position in key basins. Syme also noted COP's portfolio strength, a disciplined capital strategy, and strong balance sheet, which support resilience in a lower-price backdrop.
Syme sees the pullback in the stock as a value opportunity due to ConocoPhillips' resilience, solid fundamentals, and long-term growth prospects. While the analyst slashed COP stock's price target to reflect a reduced terminal growth rate and higher cost of equity, he sees 'substantial upside' ahead. Syme finds COP stock's valuation compelling, noting that it trades at a 15% to 25% compared to the large-cap U.S. integrated oil companies such as Exxon Mobil and Chevron, while offering similar growth and defensiveness like the integrated energy majors.
On TipRanks, ConocoPhillips stock scores a Strong Buy consensus rating based on 16 Buys and two Hold recommendations. The average COP stock price target of $113.50 indicates about 27% upside potential.
Conclusion
Wall Street is highly bullish on ConocoPhillips stock and cautiously optimistic on Exxon Mobil and Chevron. Analysts see higher upside potential in COP stock compared to the other two oil stocks. Their bullish stance is backed by ConocoPhillips' solid balance sheet, diversified business model, and the ability to navigate a challenging environment.

US stocks approach their all-time high as oil prices tumble

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks rose toward their all-time high on Tuesday after oil prices eased further on hopes that Israel's war with Iran will not damage the global flow of crude. The S&P 500 climbed 1.1%, following up on big gains for stocks across Europe and Asia, after President Donald Trump said late Monday that Israel and Iran had agreed to a 'complete and total ceasefire.' The main measure of Wall Street's health is back within 0.8% of its record set in February after falling roughly 20% below during the spring. The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 507 points, or 1.2%, and the Nasdaq composite rallied 1.4%. The strongest action was again in the oil market, where a barrel of benchmark U.S. crude fell 6% to settle at $64.37. Brent crude, the international standard, had a similar drop. The fear throughout the Israel-Iran conflict has been that it could squeeze the world's supply of oil, which would pump up prices for gasoline and hurt the global economy. Iran is a major producer of crude, and it could also try to block the Strait of Hormuz off its coast, through which 20% of the world's daily oil needs passes on ships. Oil prices began falling sharply on Monday after Iran launched what appeared to be a limited retaliatory strike to the United States' entry into the war, one that did not target the production or movement of oil. They kept falling even after attacks continued past a deadline to stop hostilities early Tuesday. Trump later said that the ceasefire was 'in effect.' Oil prices have dropped so much in the last two days that they're below where they were before the fighting began nearly two weeks ago. With the global oil market well supplied and the OPEC+ alliance of producing countries steadily increasing production, oil prices could be headed even lower as long as the ceasefire holds and a lasting peace solution can be found, said Carsten Fritsch, commodities analyst at Commerzbank. Falling oil prices should take some pressure off inflation, and that in turn could give the Federal Reserve leeway to resume cutting interest rates. Wall Street loves lower rates because they boost the economy by making it cheaper for U.S. households and businesses to borrow money to buy a car or build a factory. But they could also give inflation more fuel. That threat is why the Fed has been hesitant to cut rates this year after lowering them through the end of last year. The Fed has said repeatedly that it wants to wait and see how much Trump's tariffs will hurt the economy and raise inflation before committing to its next move. So far, the economy seems to be holding up OK, though a report on confidence among U.S. consumers came in weaker than economists expected on Tuesday, and inflation has remained only a bit above the Fed's 2% target. Trump has been pushing loudly for more cuts to rates. And two of his appointees to the Fed have said recently they may consider cutting rates as soon as the Fed's next meeting next month. Fed Chair Jerome Powell remains more cautious, though he he did indicate Tuesday that the Fed's next move is likely to be a cut. Asked during testimony before a Congressional committee whether a reduction could arrive as soon as July, Powell said, 'We will get to a place where we cut rates, sooner rather than later – but I wouldn't want to point to a particular meeting. I don't think we need to be in any rush because the economy is still strong.' That helped Treasury yields ease in the bond market. The yield on the 10-year Treasury fell to 4.29% from 4.34% late Monday. The two-year Treasury yield, which more closely tracks expectations for Fed action, fell to 3.81% from 3.84%. On Wall Street, cruise operator Carnival steamed 6.9% higher after the cruise operator delivered a much bigger profit for the latest quarter than analysts expected. CEO Josh Weinstein said it's seeing strong demand from people booking cruises close to the departure date, and customers are spending strongly once on board. Carnival also raised its forecast for an underlying measure of profit for the full year. Uber Technologies rose 7.5% after it said customers in Atlanta can use its app to ride in Waymo autonomous vehicles. Coinbase Global rallied 12.1% as the cryptocurrency exchange rose with the price of bitcoin, which jumped back above $105,000. All told, the S&P 500 rose 67.01 points to 6,092.18. The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 507.24 to 43,089.02, and the Nasdaq composite rallied 281.56 to 19,912.53. In stock markets abroad, indexes rallied at least 1% everywhere from France to Germany to Japan following the announcement of the Israel-Iran ceasefire. Hong Kong's jump of 2.1% and South Korea's leap of 3% were two of the strongest moves.

Trump's tariffs were supposed to strengthen the dollar. So why is it the weakest it's been in three years?

The US dollar is having its worst year in decades. While stocks have recovered from their April lows and demand for bonds has been relatively steady, the dollar has continued a precipitous decline. The US dollar index, which measures the dollar's strength against six major foreign currencies, is down nearly 10% this year and on Wednesday hovered around its lowest level since 2022. Wall Street had expected the dollar to strengthen under President Donald Trump's second term. His policies of tax cuts were expected to spur economic growth and tariffs were expected to reduce demand for foreign imports, boosting the greenback's value. Yet the dollar had broadly weakened this year as Trump's tariffs — and his back-and-forth decisions on implementing them, pausing them, raising them and lowering them — have injected uncertainty into markets and clouded the outlook for the US economy. While tariffs can technically boost the dollar, they also have created an uncertainty about US policy that has 'dominated' markets this year, driving the dollar lower, Barry Eichengreen, professor of economics and political science at UC Berkeley, told CNN. 'Investors don't like uncertainty,' Eichengreen said, noting the negative impact on the dollar. While uncertainty around the US economy has increased, the European economy — though facing its own headwinds from tariffs — has emerged as relatively more stable. 'The consensus out there is that US growth is slowing owing to uncertainty around Trump's tariffs and other things,' Eichengreen said. 'The weakness of the dollar may also reflect new doubts about the currency's safe haven status.' A weaker dollar could support American exporters by making their goods relatively more affordable in the global market. It could also improve revenues for businesses with overseas operations and make visiting the United States relatively more affordable for international tourists. However, the dollar is weakening at a time when there are heightened concerns about how the White House's 'erratic' policies and the massive US debt load might impact demand for US assets, Eichengreen said. Republican lawmakers hope to deliver Trump's 'One Big Beautiful Bill Act,' to his desk by July 4. There have already been concerns about foreign investors demanding higher yields to hold US debt due to concerns about the deficit. Foreign investors buying US debt want a strong dollar to get the most bang for their buck when converting their holdings into their own currency. As the dollar weakens, it eats into foreign investors' return on their investments. If there is waning demand for the dollar, Treasury yields could rise, increasing the cost of borrowing for both the US government and consumers. The dollar's decline reflects a crisis of confidence in the United States, said Arun Sai, senior multi asset strategist at Pictet Asset Management. 'If you cannot with certainty take a view on the position of the US administration, it's hard to commit capital,' Sai said. 'What we've seen with the current administration in the last few months is that this notion of the US being a default destination for global capital is being challenged.' The Trump administration's flip-flopping on tariffs has been 'detrimental to confidence' in the US dollar, according to Sai. As Trump's tariffs roiled markets in early April, there was a simultaneous drop in US stocks, bonds and the dollar that spooked investors. 'That's very peculiar. It doesn't usually happen in the US,' Sai said. 'For us, that's indicative of a loss of confidence.' Francesco Pesole, an FX strategist at ING, said the dollar's status as a strong currency and haven that investors turn to during times of stress is being dented. 'It doesn't mean it's going to lose its crown. It doesn't mean that it's going to be substituted entirely. The dollar remains the number one currency in most transactions in the world and is still the most liquid one,' Pesole said. 'However, there is now a case for markets to see that dominance sort of starting to decline at a faster pace than it has in recent years.' A survey of global fund managers by Bank of America in June showed the lowest exposure to the US dollar since 2005. Meanwhile, there have been more appealing investment opportunities in Europe. As the dollar has declined and the euro has strengthened, there are compelling opportunities to diversify and invest overseas, said Jason Blackwell, chief investment strategist at Focus Partners Wealth. International stocks can provide better returns in a weaker dollar environment. 'We can point to our non-US equity holdings and show what that diversification benefit has looked like year to date,' he said. The euro is up 11.5% against the dollar this year, hitting its strongest level against the greenback in more than four years. Blackwell said international mutual funds and ETFs are great opportunities to diversify portfolios. He said he sees the decline in the dollar as less of an indictment of the United States and more of a 'positive outlook' for other countries around the globe. Sign in to access your portfolio
