Oil and gold prices soar after Israel's attacks on Iran

The Guardian3 days ago

The price of oil and gold has soared and stock markets have fallen after Israel's strikes against targets in Iran.
The escalation of the conflict in the Middle East, the focal point of global oil production, prompted a sharp increase in prices, with Brent crude up more than 10% after news of the attacks broke, reaching its highest level since January.
The price later eased but was still up 5.5% at $73.12 a barrel, on course to record the biggest daily rise since 2022.
In London, the FTSE 100 – which closed at a record high on Thursday – fell 50 points on opening. The oil companies BP and Shell were among the few risers.
The increases hit the aviation industry, as airlines cleared the airspace over the region, and investors turned to safe investment assets such as gold and the Swiss franc.
Shares in the British Airways owner, IAG, and the budget airline easyJet fell more than 4%.
The price of gold rose 1.5% to $34,434 an ounce, close to the record high of $3,500 it hit in April, and the Swiss franc and yen rose about 0.4% against the dollar.
'The geopolitical escalation adds another layer of uncertainty to already fragile sentiment,' said Charu Chanana, the chief investment strategist at Saxo.
Stocks dived in Asia, with Japan's Nikkei down 1.3%, South Korea's Kospi falling 1.1% and Hong Kong's Hang Seng dipping 0.8%.
Pan-European Stoxx 50 futures fell 1.6% and US markets are set to follow suit when they open later on Friday, led by a sell-off in Wall Street futures. S&P E-mini futures fell 1.7% and Nasdaq futures dropped 1.8%.
Israel, which said its attack was a 'pre-emptive strike' over Iran's nuclear programme, has declared a state of emergency as its military said Tehran had launched 100 drones in retaliation.
Marco Rubio, the US secretary of state, called Israel's strikes against Iran a 'unilateral action' and said Washington was not involved.

The US dollar index rose 0.5%, while the euro fell 0.4% and sterling slipped 0.5%.
US and Iranian officials were scheduled to hold a sixth round of talks on Tehran's escalating uranium enrichment programme in Oman on Sunday.
'While we await further news and a potential response from Iran, we are likely to see a further deterioration in risk sentiment as traders cut risk seeking positions ahead of the weekend,' said Tony Sycamore, an analyst at IG.

Israel's inflation rate eases more than expected to 3.1% in May

JERUSALEM, June 15 (Reuters) - Israel's annual inflation rate eased more than expected to 3.1% in May, official data showed on Sunday, although it is still slightly above target and the escalation of the country's conflict with Iran poses additional risks to the outlook. Inflation (ILCPIY=ECI), opens new tab eased from 3.6% in April when it was boosted by a spike in airfares. The May rate was below expectations of 3.4% in a Reuters poll and stayed above the government's 1%-3% annual target range. Government officials have largely blamed war-related supply issues for a spike in inflation over the past year, even as price pressures eased globally. Israel's central bank believes demand is also helping to keep prices high. It will now be watching to see how the sudden escalation in Israel's conflict with Iran in recent days, which has already pushed oil prices higher, affects overall prices. Israel's annual inflation rate reached 3.8% in January, its highest level since September 2023. The central bank in April projected a 2.6% rate for 2025. On a monthly basis, the consumer price index (ILCPI=ECI), opens new tab fell by 0.3% in May from April, after a 1.1% rise the prior month, led by declines in the cost of transport and telecommunications, fresh vegetables and housing services, the Central Bureau of Statistics' data showed. These were partly offset by higher prices of fresh fruits, clothing, entertainment, health and food. A Reuters poll had expected a 0.1% rise month-on-month. The Bank of Israel on May 26 held its benchmark interest rate at 4.5% due to inflation worries stemming from Israel's war with Hamas militants in Gaza. A day later, Bank of Israel Governor Amir Yaron told Reuters that monetary policy needed to remain "cautious" given the uncertain geopolitical situation and near-term inflation environment, with policymakers ready to delay any rate cuts until inflation eased. The next policy decision is slated for July 7.

India Prime Minister Modi visits Cyprus to advance trade corridor plans

NICOSIA, June 15 (Reuters) - Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Cyprus on Sunday in a visit focused on the potential role the island could play in linking India to Europe via a trade corridor, officials said. Modi, who was on his way to a summit of the G7 group of nations in Canada, and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides were scheduled to address business leaders on Sunday and hold formal talks on Monday. India is pursuing the so-called India-Middle East-Europe Corridor (IMEC) trade link by sea and rail, but the visit is being held in the shadow of a rapidly escalating crisis in the Middle East. "One of the objectives of our discussions is the connection of India with Europe through the region of the wider Middle East, (and) its entry into Europe through the Republic of Cyprus," Christodoulides told journalists earlier Sunday. The two-day visit is part of a broader diplomatic outreach to European nations. Cyprus assumes the rotating EU presidency for six months in early 2026. The two countries have close relations through their shared membership of the Commonwealth.
