PinPoint Alert Day: High winds knock out power across Western Washington, calmer skies expected
We hit 70 mph at the coast last night near Hoquiam and at around 3 a.m. we hit 60 mph at Boeing Field and 52 mph at SEA. We just hit 53 mph in Tacoma with plenty of spots in the 20, 30, and 40 mph range. We'll continue to have strong gusts for the next few hours, even if we are just past the week. For example, instead of 52 mph gusts, SEA may have 48 mph gusts, then easing further past about 7-9 a.m., into the upper-30 mph and lower-40 mph range.
By mid to late morning, most of the area will be at more normal windy levels. In the meantime, expect areas of rain, downed trees and branches, obstructed roads, power outages, and strong gusts.
The High Wind Warning and the Wind Advisory will stick around until 10 a.m.
This afternoon will be gusty to breezy with a Puget Sound Convergence Zone in King and Snohomish Counties. The rest of the area will see rain this morning and then fewer showers this afternoon with some sun breaks. The morning will absolutely be the busy part of the day, with much calmer weather this afternoon. There will be a lot of snow in the mountains today as well. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the mountains, with snow and a rain-snow mix at Snoqualmie with 6-10″ in the Passes and far more at the Paradise Visitor Center.
From Wednesday through the end of the work week, the weather will be quiet with some clouds and sun and highs in the 50s to near 60. A chance of rain showers returns this weekend.

Mecklenburg County Detention Center decreasing A/C functionality ahead of scheduled maintenance during stretch of extreme heat
MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — During the hottest stretch of temperatures the greater Charlotte area has seen since 2015, the Mecklenburg County Detention Center is decreasing its air conditioning functionality. At 6:30 a.m. on Monday, July 28, the air conditioning in Tower One is set to undergo scheduled maintenance to restore full functionality to the cooling system. Staff and residents will experience a 'temporary disruption in the air conditioning services,' according to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office. The air conditioning is expected to be fully operational by Monday afternoon. Pinpoint Weather Alert: Unbearable heat this weekend Ahead of the maintenance, officials said the system will be functioning at about 45% capacity, making the affected areas warmer than usual. 'We realize this may cause discomfort and inconvenience, and we kindly ask for your patience and cooperation as we work to make these essential repairs,' the sheriff's office said. 'Staff will monitor conditions closely and take any necessary steps to support the health and well-being of residents and employees during this brief period.' When asked about additional resources that will be put in place, jail staff said there will be industrial cooling fans, and they will adjust to the needs if necessary. Denver weather: Afternoon storms, staying warm
DENVER (KDVR) — More warm temperatures are in Denver's weather forecast, alongside the chance for afternoon thunderstorms. Showers and thunderstorms will wrap up Wednesday evening, followed by clearing overnight. Low temperatures will fall to the upper 50s, which is about 5 degrees warmer than normal for this time of year. FOX31 Weather: View the latest Denver forecasts, maps and radar Thursday will start off with sunshine and warm temperatures. Then, as highs climb into the upper 80s, clouds will build in by the afternoon ahead of a few showers and thunderstorms. Some storms could become strong to severe in the eastern plains, producing large hail and damaging wind gusts. Friday will follow the familiar trend of morning sunshine, followed by high temperatures getting capped in the upper 80s as clouds roll in ahead of afternoon and evening thunderstorms. PinPoint Alert: One more day of temps in high 80s, low 90s
PinPoint Alert Day One More Hot Day Cooler Week Happy Monday! It is still really warm this morning after record breaking heat yesterday. Seattle officially hit 90°, which breaks the old record of 87°. Most of the area is in the upper-50s and 60s this morning with more heat on the way this afternoon. The pattern hasn't changed much, with high pressure still in control. We will feel some cooler air at the coast, but barely inland. In fact, there is a Heat Advisory for a good portion of Western Washington until 10 p.m. We made today a KIRO 7 PinPoint Alert Day to make sure you are prepared for the heat. We'll be in the upper-80s and lower-90s from around Seattle south and in the upper-70s to lower-80s around Everett north. Temps at the coast will be in the 60s. Cooler ocean air will hit the coast and into the Southwest Interior of the state with some low clouds early and then afternoon sun. It will be cooler, but still an above average day in the upper-70s and lower-80s. The stronger onshore wind will increase into Wednesday, producing widespread low clouds in the morning and then afternoon sun with highs falling back into the low to mid-70s. The cooldown will continue for the rest of the week, with temps falling back into the upper-60s with partly to mostly cloudy skies. We do look mainly dry, but some morning drizzle could pop up in the low clouds. Over Father's Day weekend we'll see high temperatures mostly in the 60s, with increasing morning low cloudiness. Please remember, cold water shock is a serious risk in these early heat waves, with lake water temperatures in the upper 50s to mid-60s with colder water in rivers, the Salish Sea, Puget Sound, and Pacific beaches.
