Leylah Fernandez cruises past Kalinskaya to claim Washington Open title
After a brief rain delay in the nation's capital, Fernandez - who was just one game away from defeat in the semi-finals - overcame the extreme humidity to capture her first WTA 500 title in her first final in over a year.
The Filipino-Canadian gained the upper hand early on, securing a break thanks to a Kalinskaya double fault, before breaking again with a sharp return winner.
The Russian world number 48 appeared to struggle physically as Fernandez calmly served out the opening set in just under half an hour.
Kalinskaya could not find her stride in the match, dropping serve twice in the second set, while the 22-year-old Fernandez remained in control, never looking back on her way to the title.
Fernandez will look to carry her momentum into her home tournament, the Canadian Open in Montreal, where she faces Australia's Maya Joint in the first round.
Kalinskaya, who will play against American Ann Li, remains in search of her maiden WTA title after another setback in a final.

Leon Marchand breaks 200 IM world record at World Championships
French swimmer Leon Marchand smashed the world record in the 200-meter individual medley, a mark that had stood for 14 years, at the World Swimming Championships in Singapore on Wednesday. In the semifinal heat of the 200 IM, he touched the wall in 1 minute, 52.69 seconds, besting Ryan Lochte's time of 1:54.00, set in 2011, by over a full second. "Today I felt really good before the race," he said. "In the water, I felt light, I was taking in a lot of water and technically everything felt clean." The event final is scheduled for Thursday. Marchand, 23, will attempt to break his own world record in the 400 individual medley on Sunday, the final day of competition. He set that mark of 4:02.50 at the 2023 worlds in Fukuoka, Japan. He is only competing in those two races and the relays, eliminating the 200 butterfly and 200 breaststroke from his program. Based on the Cincinnati Open website, her name is also not listed in the competing players for the said WTA 1000 event which will run from August 5 to 15. Just last Monday, Eala competed in the Canadian Open where she made a first round exit as she fell to Czech Republic's Marketa Vondrousova. "Montreal was a short but sweet trip. I had so much fun out on court! Time to rest and recover," she said in an Instagram post on Tuesday. After her supposed stint in Cincinnati, Eala is also expected to play in the WTA 500 tournament in Monterrey, Mexico before the US Open on August 24. Eala has made significant strides this year as she made a dream run in the Miami Open last March where she defeated the likes of Jelena Ostapenko, Madison Keys, and Iga Swiatek en route to the semis where she fell to Jessica Pegula. Last June, Eala also made history by reaching her first WTA Tour finals in the Eastbourne Open where she fell short against Maya Joint. Eala also made her main draw debut in the French Open and Wimbledon. Coco Gauff overcomes 23 double faults to win in Montreal

Gauff, who won the French Open last month for her second Grand Slam title, overcame a whopping 23 double faults. She served only three aces, though one came on her match point in the third-set tiebreaker. Collins' success ratio in that category wasn't much better, as she had two aces and 13 double faults. Both players converted nine of their 16 break-point opportunities. "I was practicing well and I don't think I transferred it today, but hopefully I got my bad match of the tournament out of the way," Gauff said. Regarding her double-fault total and her 74 unforced errors, Gauff said, "Maybe if I cut that in half, it would be a quicker match for me. ... Danielle is a great ball-striker, and for me to break her as many times as I did, there's definitely some positives to take from today." Gauff advances to a third-round match against Russia's Veronika Kudermetova, who topped 29th-seeded Olga Danilovic of Serbia 6-4, 6-2.
