Afterpay, Klarna, Zip warning for Aussie users as major BNPL overhaul hits today: 'You should reconsider'
Australians who use buy now, pay later (BNPL) services have been warned that new regulations coming into force from June 10 could have huge implications on their future. While these platforms have been game-changers for people running a little low on cash, they're now operating under the same rules as credit cards and personal loans.
That means services like Afterpay, Klarna, and Zip will conduct stricter checks before giving you the money, along with more oversight and big consequences if you don't stay on top of repayments. David Johnson, CEO of credit reporting firm Talefin, told Yahoo Finance these new laws could push many away from using BNPL services.
"If you have any doubt about your ability to make repayments, you should reconsider using BNPL," he said.

His warning stems from how missed payments will now impact your credit score.
Up until today, BNPL platforms weren't forced to report your payment history to big credit score firms like Equifax or illion.
Lenders can use your credit score to determine whether you're a suitable candidate for a mortgage, personal loan, or credit card.BNPL can already be a red flag for some lenders, whether you've kept up with all your payments or not.
However, this update will mean lenders will have even more information about how you handle cash advances. These platforms will now have to report every misstep, stumble, or rough month.,
"If possible, try to make sure you have more capacity than you need to repay debts, because you never know when unexpected bills might arise," Johnson told Yahoo Finance.
"The biggest potential impact on your creditworthiness will be your failure to your repayment obligations.
"If you do run into trouble making repayments, over-communicate with your credit provider.
"If you are getting into a hardship scenario, more often than not, they will work with you to remedy the situation."
Applying for a BNPL service will also be harder from today.
For some of the platforms, you only had to fill out a few details and tick a few boxes before you had the money in your account.
But now these providers will have to assess your ability to repay before approving your request.
They will follow the same rules as credit card companies and lenders by looking at your income, expenses, and existing debts.
This is designed to stop people from falling into debt traps that they can't crawl out of.
Finder research released last year found 41 per cent of Australians had used BNPL in a six-month period.
Gen Z and Millennials were the most likely to use these services compared to older generations.
Shockingly, one in three had missed another bill in order to afford their BNPL repayments, while 12 per cent had gone as far as skipping a meal.
The University of Sydney found that approximately 40 per cent of BNPL users operated more than one BNPL account, which can increase the risk of overextension and financial stress.
Afterpay also reported that more than 10 per cent of surveyed users were advised to close their BNPL accounts and subsequently qualified for a mortgage or were offered a credit card.
The government wanted to bring these BNPL services in line with other credit providers.
Assistant Treasurer Stephen Jones said it gives these platforms "clear obligations" to ensure "vulnerable consumers" don't get credit when they shouldn't.
He added that it will also result in enhanced requirements for transparency in fees and charges to help Aussies understand the full cost of these services.
It's also aimed at creating a level playing field across the credit industry.
Johnson told Yahoo Finance that you should check your BNPL platform's privacy policy to see whether they report to Equifax or illion.
They are two of the most popular credit reporting firms and are used by a raft of lenders and credit card companies.
"If you find you are struggling to access credit for a more substantial purchase (such as a home loan), make sure you understand why," he said.
"For example, do you have a good credit history? Are you asking for an amount that you can service?
"If you are not having success with a mortgage broker, try working directly with a credit provider or lender.
"Most credit providers will use a score to filter consumers through their broker network, but they will often apply different criteria to direct customers."

'It was a little bit frustrating because I felt like I put a lot of effort into the interview and the actual shift, some common courtesy of saying that I didn't get the role would have been nice,' the Bachelor of Commerce student said. But he received no further communication from them and admitted he didn't follow it up himself. 'I understand that it takes up some time, but I feel like the applicants are putting in so much effort to be professional within their resume and follow certain etiquette, you would expect that same kind of effort to be reciprocated,' he said. Sisaye said it was his first experience being ghosted by an employer. He blamed the trend on businesses being 'inundated' with applicants in the current tight jobs market. In hindsight, Sisaye said he should have followed up with the company himself following the trial shift. He has since gained a different retail nine in 10 Aussie workers say they have been ghosted by a prospective employer, new data from job site Indeed found. That's equivalent to 12.5 million workers. For one in six, it has happened so often that they said they rarely hear back at all. Indeed career expert Sally McKibbin said workplace ghosting wasn't necessarily a new trend, but we now had a name for it thanks to the dating equivalent. 'There can be multiple factors when ghosting occurs,' she told Yahoo Finance. 'It can be down to things like they've shifted what they need and maybe that role has been put on hold, or potentially they are interviewing and trialing other people and they haven't come back to you, or a line manager has disappeared and the recruiter doesn't have any feedback for you in that moment.' McKibbin said the high volume of applications for jobs, particularly in the retail and hospitality sectors, could be exacerbating ghosting. "The job market has softened in comparison to a year or so ago, but the unemployment rate is still sitting quite low at 4.1 per cent," she said. "But there's still 48 per cent more jobs on Indeed than there were during pre-pandemic times, which sat quite consistently." McKibbin warned businesses ghosting could have a negative impact on their reputation and brand. 'A simple follow-up to let the candidate know that they were unsuccessful really goes a long way,' she said. 'We all want to know where we stand in this process, but for your brand, if you're a consumer brand as well, think about the impact that has on that person telling somebody else, and somebody else.' McKibbin called out the Circle Back Initiative, which was launched during the pandemic and is dedicated to ensuring job candidates receive a response to applications and aren't ghosted throughout the process. Other workers have taken the matter into their own hands, with Australian software engineer Ricjohn Genoguin developing the website to call out companies who have ghosted applicants after being ghosted himself several times. McKibbin has called on employers to do better and not leave workers 'in the dark'. 'I really hope that with more technology, it frees up the time for recruiters and managers to have much better human interaction and businesses to have far clearer processes on how to get back to job seekers through that process,' she said. PM unveils summit to lift lagging productivity
An economic summit will bring together business, union and other leaders in a bid to lift Australia's lagging productivity. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced a productivity roundtable would be held in August to shape ways to grow the economy during his second term in office. Leaders from civil society will be invited to attend the summit alongside industry and union representatives. "We want to build the broadest possible base of support for further economic reform, to drive growth, boost productivity, strengthen the budget and secure the resilience of our economy in a time of global uncertainty," Mr Albanese said in a speech at the National Press Club on Tuesday. "What we want is a focused dialogue and constructive debate that leads to concrete and tangible actions." Experts have expressed concern about Australia's lagging rate of productivity, a key economic measure of efficiency and long-term driver of improved living standards. Mr Albanese said he wanted to see a boost to productivity, alongside other economic indicators. "We want to build an economy where growth, wages and productivity rise together," he said. "The starting point for our government is clear. Our plan for economic growth and productivity is about Australians earning more and keeping more of what they earn." The prime minister also announced Jenny Wilkinson would become the first female Treasury secretary. Ms Wilkinson, who currently heads up the Finance Department, will replace Steven Kennedy, who will become the country's most senior public servant as head of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. Hilton Opens Garden Inn Gen A in China as Brand Bets on Young Travelers
Hilton on Tuesday debuted its first Hilton Garden Inn Gen A hotels in China, a new regional prototype designed specifically for younger, more design-conscious travelers – Gen A stands for Generation Alpha. The openings are in multiple cities, including Chongqing, Sanya, and Harbin. At its 2025 Hilton Garden Inn Investment Summit, the company also announced 19 new signings for the brand across Greater China, adding to a growing pipeline of 185 planned properties, in addition to the 115 already operating in the region. Hilton's 2025 Trends Report revealed that 88% of Gen Alpha and Gen Z in Asia Pacific are likely to travel in the next year. Gen Alpha and Gen Z's appetite for travel is particularly pronounced in China, India and Singapore, where young travelers have gone on two to three trips on average in the past year. The company has chosen a light-asset model in China, using joint ventures and franchise deals to expand rapidly without tying up capital. 'Our business in China is large and still keeps going strong,' Kevin Jacobs, Hilton's CFO, said in the company's most recent earnings call. 'Part of that business in China… is in a joint venture format for Hampton and Hilton Garden Inn, where we share the economics… Every one of those deals is, like a lot of our franchise deals, no capital, infinite yield, and we're growing a huge presence and building a big brand name in China on the backs of those deals.' Jacobs noted that Hilton Garden Inn continues to be a strong performer in China. He explained that these deals are made at market rates with full fees and deliver higher RevPAR. Hilton CEO Chris Nassetta said during the call that the strategy is entering a new phase: 'Now what we're doing is franchising. We've built a team and we're franchising, particularly with Garden Inn and other brands, our own brands.' Alan Watts, Hilton's Asia-Pacific president, told Skift earlier this year: 'One in every 3 hotels under construction in China carries the Hilton flag.' And Hilton Garden Inn, in particular, has become the go-to brand for smaller Chinese cities, where full-service Hiltons might not be viable yet. Hilton has more than 840 hotels in China across 260 destinations, but the domestic travel environment is still recovering. Hilton reported that RevPAR in China dropped by 3.1% in the first quarter of 2025, mainly due to strong outbound travel during the Chinese New Year and tough comparisons to last year. That hasn't slowed the company's long-term plans. In the February earnings call Nassetta pointed out, 'Chinese are traveling like crazy. So there's a whole outbound story… So, while we still expect China to sort of be positive growth, but tepid… when you aggregate all the demand for travel coming out of China, it's super beneficial to our broader APAC business.' China may not be booming right now, but outbound Chinese travelers are fueling Hilton's growth in nearby regions like Japan, Southeast Asia, and Australasia. To strengthen its position among Chinese travelers, Hilton recently teamed up with DiDi ChuXing, the country's leading ride-hailing platform. Through the partnership, Hilton Honors and DiDi Mileage members now enjoy tier-based cross-program benefits that range from discounted rides to room upgrades and late checkouts. Ben George, Hilton's APAC commercial director, explained the idea behind the collaboration: 'We're creating a seamless journey from departure to hotel, further elevating the overall Stay experience for our members and guests.' For Hilton, this kind of lifestyle integration isn't just a perk. It's part of a broader strategy to keep travelers inside its ecosystem — from booking a car to checking in at the hotel. Last year Hilton also announced a new partnership with Starbucks China, allowing Hilton Honors and Starbucks Rewards members in mainland China to link their accounts, earn points, reciprocal membership benefits and fast-tracked elite status.
