Maryland wants your input on pedestrian and bike safety plans
The survey is available until midnight on Aug. 7 at https://tinyurl.com/4jvzvmdz. It allows participants to use a digital map to share their experiences walking, biking and rolling on identified routes. The feedback will help the agency evaluate safety needs and update its safety plan for non-motorists.
Vulnerable road users, including pedestrians and cyclists, are at a higher risk of being injured or killed in crashes. This assessment aims to address their safety needs, as these groups account for an increasing share of transportation fatalities in Maryland and nationwide.
In addition to the survey, the State Highway Administration is hosting five virtual public meetings this summer. These meetings will provide residents an opportunity to ask questions and give feedback on specific geographic areas. All meetings will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. via Microsoft Teams. Maryland's first VRU Assessment was completed in November 2023. This year's update aligns with federal requirements and will occur every five years thereafter. The assessment supports the Maryland Department of Transportation's Serious About Safety initiative and the Complete Streets policy, which aims to enhance safety and connectivity for all road users.

Mass. college earns spot among 30 ‘most beautiful campuses' in US
A Massachusetts college is considered as having among the most beautiful college campuses in the country. Last month, Travel + Leisure published a list of the 30 most beautiful college campuses in the U.S. Among them was Wellesley College. Known as an elite all-women's college and as the host of the Boston Marathon's scream tunnel, Wellesley College's campus boasts 500 acres of beautiful scenery. Wellesley scored high based on 'pathways that meander through sprawling meadows and groves of conifers that surround tranquil Lake Waban, with 19th-century brick buildings tucked into the wooded hillsides,' according to Travel + Leisure. 'Several greenhouses, lush with tropical, subtropical, and desert plantings, stay green straight through the long northeastern winters,' Travel + Leisure added. Coast Guard rescues woman from cruise ship during tsunami alert
Amid a tsunami warning, the US Coast Guard launched a dramatic rescue operation at sea on Tuesday. A passenger on the cruise ship 'Carnival Legend' suffered a medical emergency. The ship was over 120 miles off the coast of Washington State. An earthquake off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula had previously triggered a tsunami alert.
