Boston declares heat emergency ahead of extremely hot weather, Worcester opens cooling centers
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu has declared a heat emergency in the city from Sunday, June 22 through Tuesday, June 24 due to a forecast calling for extreme heat. Boston and Worcester are also opening cooling centers for residents seeking relief.
An extreme heat watch is in effect from Sunday morning through Tuesday for the following Massachusetts counties: Suffolk, Plymouth, Bristol, Norfolk, Middlesex, Essex, Worcester, Franklin, Hampshire and Hampden.
It's been about a year since the Boston area had a heat wave. On Tuesday, many towns could reach 100 degrees. If Boston hits 100, it'll be the first time since 2022.
Boston cooling centers
In Boston, splash pads and city pools will be open, along with DCR pools and splash pads throughout the state.
Several Boston Centers for Youth & Families will be open as cooling centers. Boston Public Library locations throughout the city will also be open for residents looking for relief from the heat.
Worcester cooling centers
In Worcester, cooling centers have been activated for Monday and Tuesday and will have water on hand:

Worcester Public Library (main branch) - 3 Salem Square from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Worcester Senior Center - 128 Providence St. from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Tuesday, June 24
Worcester Public Library (main branch) - 3 Salem Square from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Worcester Senior Center - 128 Providence St. from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Worcester 311 Customer Service Center - 799 Main St. from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The city said the East Spray Park at 180 Shrewsbury St. and Greenwood Spray Spark at 14 Forsberg St. will also be open.

She painted in plein air that felt like 100° and rising. During an extreme heat warning with dangerously hot and humid conditions, people like Allison Vega flooded places like Millenium Park. "Kids are running around in their bathing suits, just laying on the ground in the dirty water, but they're cool. So, that's what matters. They're happy and they're cool," she said as her kids played in Crown Fountain. Bodies of water, no matter how big or small, were the place to be on Saturday. Buddies Zach Frame and Parker Greenfield beat the heat and the crowds at Humboldt Park Beach, the city's only inland beach, avoiding the larger crowds on the lakefront while still managing to find sand and sun. "I feel like we kind of skipped spring and went right into summer and then it hit pretty hard," Frame said. Chicago was sweltering, but the Windy City offered some brief relief. "The breeze definitely helps," Frame said.

Once it makes its way over to the East Coast, the feel-like temperature will exceed 100 degrees. "By Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, it starts to slide towards the east. New York City and Philadelphia haven't had an actual air temperature of 100 in 13 years," ABC News chief meteorologist Ginger Zee said. "We're going to get close. The forecast is around 99 [degrees] for New York, but it's going to feel like 107 [degrees]." Although this extreme heat wave hasn't made impact just yet, Americans are already extending kind thoughts to those on the East Coast. "This heat wave can just go. I hope you all stay safe," one person wrote on X. "Heat wave is on the horizon," a second person said. "Be safe, and remember to check in on your neighbors, especially those who are elderly or disabled." "If you live in America and you're experiencing the extreme heat wave we are in right now if you have animals PLEASE make sure you're checking the concrete before letting them on if. if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for them," another person noted. Tens of millions of Americans are under heat alerts as extreme heat hits several parts of the country this week, especially the northeast. Extreme heat warnings issued for Philadelphia, New York City and Boston go into effect on Sunday as the heat ramps up for the second half of the weekend. An extreme heat watch was also issued for Washington, D.C., and Baltimore on Monday. New York City Mayor Eric Adams told reporters Saturday that temperatures will reach the high 90s, and peak heat on Tuesday will be 100 degrees. "The conditions can be deadly and life-threatening if you are not prepared," he said at a news conference. Other parts of the country will also face similar issues due to the high heat. Heat alerts have been issued from Colorado to Maine, including more than 150 million Americans. The extreme heat could be life-threatening. The heat begins expanding east on Sunday with highs soaring into the 90s from the Great Lakes to southern New England.
