As India halts trade, Pakistan may try to source Indian goods at higher prices through third countries: GTRI
New Delhi [India], April 25 (ANI): Following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, India has officially halted all trade with Pakistan, further escalating tensions between the two countries.
However, according to the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), this border closure is expected to stop only formal trade, not demand. Pakistan is likely to try to continue sourcing Indian goods indirectly through third countries, though at a higher cost.
GTRI mentioned that trade relations between India and Pakistan have remained strained since the Pulwama attack in February 2019. At the time, India revoked Pakistan's Most Favoured Nation (MFN) status and imposed a steep 200 per cent duty on its imports.
It said, "In short, border closures halt formal trade--but not demand. Pakistan will continue sourcing Indian goods, just at a higher cost and through third countries".
In response, Pakistan suspended all bilateral trade with India by August 2019. Since then, formal trade has largely been suspended, with only a few exports from India--mainly medicines--allowed on humanitarian grounds.
Despite the official trade freeze, India exported goods worth USD 447.7 million to Pakistan in the current fiscal year (April 2024 to January 2025), as per official data.
These exports primarily included essential items such as pharmaceuticals (over USD 110.1 million), active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIS) worth USD 129.6 million, sugar valued at USD 85.2 million, auto parts worth USD 12.8 million, and fertilisers worth USD 6 million.
In contrast, India's imports from Pakistan were negligible, amounting to just USD 0.42 million. These imports included niche agricultural items, such as figs worth USD 78,000, and herbs like basil and rosemary, valued at USD 18,856.
Although formal trade channels are now completely closed, pakistan will try to continue the imports through informal routes via third countries. GTRI estimates that nearly USD 10 billion worth of trade still takes place through re-export routes, mainly via the United Arab Emirates and Singapore.
Pakistan reportedly imports several Indian products through these third countries, including pharmaceuticals, chemicals, cotton, tea, coffee, dyes, onions, tomatoes, iron, steel, sugar, salt, and auto parts.
On the other hand, India may receive goods like Himalayan pink salt and dry fruits such as dates, apricots, and almonds from Pakistan through similar indirect routes.
The current move is expected to raise the cost of such goods in Pakistan while also complicating supply chains. (ANI)

"It is not that Rahul Gandhi doesn't understand how the electoral process works. He does very well. But his goal is not clarity, it is chaos. His repeated attempts to sow seeds of doubt and dissension in the minds of voters about our institutional processes are deliberate," Malviya's post added. In response to the allegation made by Congress MP Rahul Gandhi regarding the Maharashtra election, the Election Commission described it as "unsubstantiated allegations." "Unsubstantiated allegations raised against the Electoral Rolls of Maharashtra are an affront to the rule of law. The Election Commission brought out all these facts in its reply to the INC on 24th December 2024 itself, which is available on ECI's website. It appears that all these facts are completely being ignored while raising such issues again and again," the ECI statement read.

Bharat Mata portrait row: CPI hoists national flag, plants saplings
Thrissur , CPI, the second-largest partner in the ruling LDF in Kerala, on Saturday hoisted the national flag and planted saplings as a mark of protest against the usage of the Bharat Mata portrait at an Environment Day event in the Raj Bhavan. State Agriculture Minister and CPI leader P Prasad had boycotted the event at the Raj Bhavan on June 5 over the use of the portrait, citing that it was the one used by the RSS. The Left party had announced that it would hoist the national flag, which is the symbol of Bharat Mata, at all its branches on Saturday and would plant saplings as a mark of protest against the Raj Bhavan's action. CPI state secretary Binoy Viswam hoisted the flag and planted the sapling at the party district office in Thrissur on Saturday morning. State Revenue Minister P Rajan and senior leader and former minister V S Sunil Kumar were among those who were present during the protest event. After the event, Viswam sought to know whether the Constitution of the country or the policies of the RSS were important for Governor Vishwanath Rajendra Arlekar. "This flag is the Bharat Mata. There is no Bharat Mata other than this," he said, hoisting the national flag. Apparently criticising the Governor, he said any attempt to impose another concept of Bharat Mata is "unconstitutional" and "anti-national". CPI leaders and workers gathered and raised "Bharat Mata ki jai" slogan also. Minister Prasad, who had boycotted the event, said on Friday that those in constitutional offices cannot convert government programmes into political events. A similar view was also expressed by state General Education Minister V Sivankutty, who said that the Raj Bhavan and the Governor were above politics and said that Arlekar should withdraw from the stand taken by him. As the incident triggered a row, the Governor had issued a statement saying that "Whatever be the pressure, from whichever quarters, there will be no compromise whatsoever on Bharat Mata."

YouTuber Jasbir Singh Sent To 2-Day Police Remand In Pak-Linked Espionage Case
Social media influencer Jasbir Singh, who was arrested by Punjab Police on charges of espionage, has been sent to two days of police remand by a Mohali court on Saturday. "The police had asked for 7 days remand... We asked the police through the court what they did in 3 days. Today, he has been sent to a 2-day police remand," ANI quoted Jasbir's lawyer as saying. Jasbir, who runs a YouTube channel "JaanMahal Video" with over 11 lakh subscribers, was arrested by the Punjab Police's State Special Operation Cell (SSOC) on June 4 on espionage charges. According to the Police, Jasbir is allegedly linked to a terror-backed espionage network involving Pakistani intelligence operative Shakir alias Jutt Randhawa. The YouTuber is said to have maintained close contact with Haryana-based YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra, who was arrested last month for spying, and Ehsan-ur-Rahim alias Danish, a Pakistani national and expelled Pakistan High Commission official, ANI quoted police as saying.
