Twin Cities basketball standout Maddyn Greenway aiming for the record books
Maddyn Greenway is one of the best girls basketball players Minnesota's ever seen.
Because of her, Providence Academy has won three straight state titles and hasn't lost in over a calendar year.
"It really helps when our point guard is one of the best kids in the country," said Lions head coach Connor Goetz. "That definitely doesn't hurt. She's someone who refuses to lose. So when your leader on the team refuses to lose it builds confidence in everyone else."
Maddyn is the daughter of longtime Vikings linebacker Chad Greenway.
"Just being around my dad and being at an NFL game every Sunday was super cool," said Greenway. "Obviously, he didn't coach me as much when I was younger, but once he started to do it, I realized the intensity that sports came with. I think he instilled that in me from the start."
That competitiveness is plain to see as the Kentucky-commit carves up and down the court, putting up gaudy numbers.
Championships are the status quo by now. Greenway hopes to have five basketball state crowns by the time she graduates. Even Greenway's soccer team took the title last season.
"For basketball, it's the standard. But for soccer, we had been so close so many years, and to finally get it was the most relief I've felt in a while," said Greenway.
Some may bring up the high school class topic. Providence Academy is down in AA. But they've played the big schools, and this year, have passed every test.
"We've played Hopkins when they had everyone. We've played Maple Grove, who's obviously a tremendous team," said Greenway. "Some people say 'well, they're a smaller class,' but it's kind of like 'who else do you want us to play?'"
Then, there's the history at hand. Greenway has the rest of this season, and then her senior season left to play. She already has over 4,000 career points and is on pace to set Minnesota's all-time scoring record of 5,060.
"Obviously, that's the goal," said Greenway. "I do think that me and Tori are on the road to that."
Yes, there is another. Crosby Ironton's Tori Oehrlein is also a junior with an equal shot at the record. For years, the two have been on a collision course to see who can break the record and be the last one standing.
"I think it's cool, what she's doing; the fact that we both have a chance to break it in the end," said Greenway. "Obviously though, we are competitors in a sense. One and two-ranked in the state. Whatever happens with points, I'll congratulate her, but in the end, I obviously want to come out on top."

Numbers show different side to Vikings' Byron Murphy Jr.'s 2024 Pro Bowl season
Numbers show different side to Vikings' Byron Murphy Jr.'s 2024 Pro Bowl season Byron Murphy Jr. had a Pro Bowl season and led the Vikings in a variety of statistics, including interceptions. At one point in the season, he went as far as to tell the media that he wanted to secure an interception in every game last season. While that didn't happen, the numbers show that he had every chance because of the number of times he was targeted. PFF recently published a piece showing the most targeted cornerbacks by situation. Byron Murphy Jr. was one of the leaders in several situations. When he was lined up in the slot, he was targeted 60 times on 267 coverage snaps, while in late down situations, he was targeted 44 times in 207 coverage snaps. He allowed a combined completion percentage of 66.5% on those snaps. Could it be because he was going for the ball? The point is that teams feel they can still test him, for whatever reason. In 2025, if they decide to do that again, they could be burned again, potentially with six interceptions.

Minnesota Vikings defensive back seen as breakout candidate for 2025 season
Minnesota Vikings defensive back seen as breakout candidate for 2025 season The Minnesota Vikings defense is loaded with talent across the board, which allows Brian Flores to be so aggressive with his schemes and playcalling. In 2024, the Vikings' defense reached a level it had not seen in decades when it became a game-wrecker unit. They were led by their aggressive edge rushers and their dynamic duo at safety, but they went beyond that. One of the players deep in their bullpen is Theo Jackson, and PFF is predicting him to have a big 2024 season. That is why they named him to their 2025 All-Breakout Team. Bradley Locker wrote up the selections of the team. When it comes to Jackson, he writes, ". . .safety is a position worth keeping an eye on this season. Jackson is poised to help ease those concerns. On only 79 defensive snaps last season, Jackson shined with a 79.2 overall PFF grade and a stringent 77.1 PFF coverage grade. In his three years with the Vikings, the former sixth-round pick has only played 222 total defensive snaps but has finished above a 69.0 PFF coverage grade in every season." Jackson will have a chance to play more than the 79 snaps mentioned above in part due to the departure of Camryn Bynum in free agency. While Josh Metellus and Harrison Smith will be the two leading the starting group, Jackson will be utilized as Flores's Swiss army knife of the defense.

Top 10 injury news of Lions 2024 season No. 5: Carlton Davis breaks his jaw
Top 10 injury news of Lions 2024 season No. 5: Carlton Davis breaks his jaw As the defensive injuries mounted over the course of the year, it was the strength and health of the secondary that helped hold things together. However, the first crack in the secondary armor occurred in Week 15 when Carlton Davis broke his jaw, ending his season. No. 10: Alex Anzalone's forearm No. 9: Ifeatu Melifonwu's turbulent year No. 8: Christian Mahogany's delayed debut No. 7: James Houston's ill-fated comeback No. 6: David Montgomery's mysterious knee Up to that point, he had been locking down the #1 CB position after the Lions traded for him in the offseason. Here he is spectacularly picking off his second interception against the Texans in Week 10.... JAW FRACTURE VIDEO - December 15, 2024 As you can see, Davis took multiple hits to the jaw during the game. It's uncertain exactly when the fracture occurred. IMPACT OF INJURY The injury cost him the final three regular season games and the playoff game. The loss of Davis was mollified during that time by the strong play of Amik Robertson at outside CB. But when Robertson fractured his humerus just two minutes into the playoff game, that may have been the straw that broke the Lion's back. The initial expected recovery timeline for Davis was 6-8 weeks which made a return for the Super Bowl a possibility. Unfortunately, Lions fans never got to see if that might happen. OFFSEASON OUTCOME Davis became an unrestricted free-agent after the season. On March 10, 2025 which was the first day of the free-agent legal tampering period, Davis agreed to sign with the New England Patriots for 3-years, up to $54 million with $34.5 million guaranteed. The Lions may not have been willing to match that number given the jaw fracture as well as the many other maladies he suffered last year which included a hamstring, two possible shoulders, thumb fracture, and left knee. Replacing him will be D.J. Reed who the Lions signed this offseason to 3-years, up to $48 million with $32 million guaranteed. Both Reed and Davis are the same age (28), but Reed enters next season with a lower medical concern level. INJURY OUTLOOK During this offseason, Davis missed some of the Patriot's OTA (organized team activities), but ended up showing up healthy around June 5. He is expected to be physically fine for training camp and the season. Looking forward, there are some concerns. The NFL has seen some jaw fractures over the years including Clay Matthews in 2019, Montez Sweat in 2021, and former Lion, DeShon Elliott in 2022. While the limited sample size suggests good recoveries, it's still difficult to confidently project. There are worries of refracture risk, as well as the potential of a mental hurdle that affects his aggressiveness.
