Eighth-grader Beckett Greenway receives first Division I basketball offer
Beckett Greenway, daughter of former Minnesota Vikings linebacker Chad Greenway and sister of top-ranked 2025 Minnesota recruit Maddyn Greenway, received her first Division I scholarship offer from South Dakota State, she said Monday on social media. And Beckett is still only in the eighth grade. Beckett played alongside her sister and helped Providence Academy claim a Class 2A state title this spring. Beckett averaged 12.2 points, 3.3 boards and 3.2 assists per game for the Lions last season, according to stats provided by the MN Girls Basketball Hub. As Beckett will only be in ninth grade next year, the offer from the Jackrabbits is sure to be the first of many. Beckett is a multi-sport athlete, also playing soccer for the Lions. She previously won a soccer championship with Providence Academy, too. Athleticism is in the genes at the Greenway household. Chad was a stellar linebacker, playing 10 NFL seasons with the Vikings, and Maddyn is the top-ranked girls basketball recruit in Minnesota's 2025 class and is committed to play at Kentucky this fall. Beckett looks to be the next top-level recruit in town, and you'll likely hear more of her soon.

They're back! Cicadas are back for 2025 in Tennessee. Here's where Brood XIV is emerging
They're baaack! Did you miss them? Cicadas have started to reemerge for the 2025 season. The bugs are generally harmless, but the drone of their buzzing will quickly become a nuisance for Tennesseans. The 17-year periodical Brood XIV cicada will be the predominant cicada species haunting Tennessee in 2025. This species of cicada was last seen in 2008. The bugs arrived as forecast; in late April or early May, when the soil temperature at eight inches deep reached 64 degrees. Until June, these large, red-eyed insects will be in just about every corner of the Volunteer State. Here's what to know about the noisy bugs and their tenure in Tennessee this summer. Have there already been cicada sightings in Tennessee? A cicada rests on the jersey of Providence Academy's Luke Mcintosh (28) before the start of the Division II Class A TSSAA baseball tournament game against Columbia Academy on Tuesday, May 21, 2024 in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Cicadas are coming out all across the eastern half of the United States, especially in Tennessee and Western North Carolina. A preliminary report from Cicada Safari shows a whopping 360 Cicada sightings near Asheville. There have been 35 sightings near Pigeon Forge, 26 in southeast Tennessee and another seven near Knoxville. Nashville has 18 reported sightings, according to the Cicada Safari map. Which states will have cicadas in 2025? Thirteen U.S. states, including Tennessee, will see cicadas this year. States getting cicadas in 2025 are concentrated in the eastern half of the country: Georgia Indiana Kentucky Massachusetts Maryland North Carolina New Jersey New York Ohio Pennsylvania Tennessee Virginia West Virginia When are the cicadas coming to Tennessee? Cicadas will begin to emerge from their underground burrows in the springtime, once the temperature reaches about 65 degrees, according to Cicada Mania. You'll likely start to see cicadas in the Volunteer State during the fourth week in April or the first week in May, according to Gene Kritsky, founder of Cicada Safari. Southern Tennessee will be first to hear the buzz of cicadas, then the insects will start coming out in the northern part of the Volunteer State. How long will the cicadas be in Tennessee? The Brood XIV cicadas will only stick around in Tennessee for a few weeks. The periodical cicadas will be present as early as April 2025 and should disappear again by late June, according to Cicada Mania. When will the cicadas go away in Tennessee? This is probably your most pressing cicada-related question: When will they finally be gone?!? Cicadas will likely have gone away in Tennessee by late June 2025. Cicada emergence map 2025 How long do cicadas live? The lifespan of a cicada varies. There are over 3,000 species of cicadas, according to National Geographic. The Brood XIV cicadas generally have a lifespan of about 17 years. Are cicadas blind? No. Cicadas actually have excellent vision, according to the University of Connecticut biodiversity research collections. CIcadas' supposed blindness is a myth because periodical cicadas don't care about where they land. Can cicadas bite? No. Cicadas do not bite, nor do they sting. Though they are annoying, the bugs are not considered to be harmful. Can dogs eat cicadas? While cicadas are not inherently toxic for dogs, the American Kennel Club recommends stopping your pups from eating the bugs. If dogs eat one or two cicadas, the dogs likely will be OK. However, if dogs eat too many, the bug's exoskeleton will become difficult to digest. This can cause your dog to have severe stomach upset and abdominal pain, vomiting and bloody diarrhea, according to the American Kennel Club. Twin Cities basketball standout Maddyn Greenway aiming for the record books
Maddyn Greenway is one of the best girls basketball players Minnesota's ever seen. Because of her, Providence Academy has won three straight state titles and hasn't lost in over a calendar year. "It really helps when our point guard is one of the best kids in the country," said Lions head coach Connor Goetz. "That definitely doesn't hurt. She's someone who refuses to lose. So when your leader on the team refuses to lose it builds confidence in everyone else." Maddyn is the daughter of longtime Vikings linebacker Chad Greenway. "Just being around my dad and being at an NFL game every Sunday was super cool," said Greenway. "Obviously, he didn't coach me as much when I was younger, but once he started to do it, I realized the intensity that sports came with. I think he instilled that in me from the start." That competitiveness is plain to see as the Kentucky-commit carves up and down the court, putting up gaudy numbers. Championships are the status quo by now. Greenway hopes to have five basketball state crowns by the time she graduates. Even Greenway's soccer team took the title last season. "For basketball, it's the standard. But for soccer, we had been so close so many years, and to finally get it was the most relief I've felt in a while," said Greenway. Some may bring up the high school class topic. Providence Academy is down in AA. But they've played the big schools, and this year, have passed every test. "We've played Hopkins when they had everyone. We've played Maple Grove, who's obviously a tremendous team," said Greenway. "Some people say 'well, they're a smaller class,' but it's kind of like 'who else do you want us to play?'" Then, there's the history at hand. Greenway has the rest of this season, and then her senior season left to play. She already has over 4,000 career points and is on pace to set Minnesota's all-time scoring record of 5,060. "Obviously, that's the goal," said Greenway. "I do think that me and Tori are on the road to that." Yes, there is another. Crosby Ironton's Tori Oehrlein is also a junior with an equal shot at the record. For years, the two have been on a collision course to see who can break the record and be the last one standing. "I think it's cool, what she's doing; the fact that we both have a chance to break it in the end," said Greenway. "Obviously though, we are competitors in a sense. One and two-ranked in the state. Whatever happens with points, I'll congratulate her, but in the end, I obviously want to come out on top."

Minnesota high school phenom Maddyn Greenway has a big fan in Baby Gronk
We know what you're thinking: "Baby Gronk? Who is that?" Baby Gronk, born as Madden San Miguel, is a 12-year-old budding football player nicknamed after former NFL star Rob Gronkowski. He gained fame on social media when he was an 8-year-old, and now has more than a million combined subscribers on YouTube and Instagram. Anyway, the mullet-rocking, football-playing, grill-wearing boy attended a Minnesota girls basketball game between Providence Academy and Rock Ridge last weekend and his crew documented the experience, which featured an in-person view of the No. 1-ranked junior player in Minnesota: Maddyn Greenway. During the game, Baby Gronk met Greenway's father, Chad, who starred at linebacker for the Minnesota Vikings. Greenway told Baby Gronk that he could play at the University of Iowa someday, not failing to mention that the Hawkeyes are known as "Tight End U." The video provides a front row seat to Greenway dominating. Fresh off of becoming the fourth girls player in Minnesota history to reach 4,000 career points, the Kentucky commit scored 28 points to lead No. 1 and undefeated (24-0) Providence Academy to an 84-47 victory. Baby Gronk spent halftime and time after the game taking photos with fans. Greenway became the fourth Minnesota girls hooper to reach 4,000 career points just days after Crosby-Ironton star Tori Oehrlein reached the mark. Oehrlein, also a junior, is committed to the University of Minnesota. It's unclear why Baby Gronk was in Minnesota, but good for him for supporting one of the best prep athletes in state history.
