Mumbai: Three men who assaulted and threatened a Rajasthan-based jeweller and extorted money from him at Mumbai Central Terminus recently have been identified as personnel from Govt Railway Police (GRP).
They have been placed under suspension.
The trio, assistant sub inspector Rathod, head constable Jagtap and head constable Bhosle, will be arrested soon. Four other policemen present during the incident have been transferred. The action was taken by GRP commissioner M Rakesh Kalasagar a day after media reports of the incident. "We are taking up this issue very seriously," said Kalasagar.
The jeweller and his eight-year-old daughter had come down to his sister's place in Mumbai for Raksha Bandhan.
They had booked return tickets for Rajasthan on Duranto Express on Aug 10. The jeweller's brother-in-law accompanied them to the Terminus to bid farewell. On platform 5, the group was stopped by a uniformed man seated at a table for checking their luggage.

The duo took the jeweller, his daughter and brother-in-law outs of the terminus through an alley to a room. A 'senior' was seated in the room which was later identified as a beat chowky.
The jeweller was threatened that he would be locked up overnight if he did not surrender the gold. He was abused and slapped twice. His daughter started to cry. The men threatened to produce the gold before a magistrate and asked him to arrange for a copy of his Aadhaar card over the phone.
They also forced the jeweller to sign some blank sheets of paper.
Around 10.55 pm, about five minutes before his train was to leave, the men returned his gold but kept his money. The jeweller pleaded that he would need cash for expenses during the journey. At this, the men returned Rs 1,900 and asked him to run if he still wanted to get into the train on time.
"Based on CCTV footage, we identified the three policemen and placed them under suspension. Four other cops were present at the location but their involvement has not been confirmed. They have been transferred to the GRP headquarters," said a senior official.

DGP: 750 illegal properties of anti-social elements demolished across Gujarat

DGP Vikas Sahay on Tuesday said that the Gujarat Police has prepared a list of anti-social elements in a drive held on March 15, 2025. Addressing a press conference after the 'Monthly Crime Conference' at Ektanagar in Narmada, the DGP said 750 illegal properties linked to those in the list were demolished so far. Out of the 750 illegal properties, 650 were on government land, the DGP said, adding that 2,190 illegal electricity connections had been severed. He said that the police department is carrying out result-oriented work at various stages to curb crime in the state. Special emphasis is being placed on taking strict action against usurers and ensuring that common citizens are freed from the clutches of moneylenders. 'Under this action, complaints were registered in 64 cases in July and 105 people were accused. As many as 956 accused persons have been arrested in 400 cases so far this year,' a statement from the Home Department, quoting Sahay, said. To return the valuables including the stolen goods seized from the accused in the state to their owners, the police department, in coordination with courts, has organised 761 events across the state in July under 'Tera Tujko Arpan' programme and goods worth over Rs 25 crore were returned to their owners. Goods worth over Rs 127 crore have been returned to its owners so far this year, the DGP said. Police have started a 'Cyber Center of Excellence' to curb cybercrime and strengthen action against criminals. An estimated amount of Rs 28 crore has been returned to the citizens in July in cases of fraud committed against people under cybercrime.

FIR against criminal for threatening & extorting farmer

Kolhapur: A criminal on police records was booked on Monday on the charge of threatening and extorting a farmer from Sangli's Retre Dharan village on Aug 1 while he was transporting cattle for sale. The farmer transporting four cows to Kolhapur for sale was stopped by the accused, who claimed to be gau rakshak, in the Shiroli police station area. "He falsely accused the farmer of heading to slaughter the cows and demanded Rs 1.5 lakh to let him go. The farmer paid part of the amount in cash and Rs 30,000 online, after which the accused allowed him to leave," an officer said. MLC Sadabhau Khot, president of Rayat Kranti Sanghatana that is part of the BJP-led alliance, visited the police station to register a complaint against the accused. "Several farmers have been intimidated by the accused and others, warning them not to file complaints or they would face harm or even murder. Given the accused's history as a criminal and the potential threat to witnesses, I personally oversaw the registration of the case," Khot said. The case under sections 351(2) and 352 has been registered. Sunil Gaikwad, assistant police inspector, said, "We have registered a non-cognizable offence now. We are going to charge the accused for extortion under Section 383 of BNS. We will arrest him once we get more details from the complainant."
