Jeremy Corbyn to address picket in historic Glasgow hotel strike

Yahoo2 days ago
Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn will address a picket at a Glasgow hotel where workers are engaged in a historic strike action.
Hospitality staff who are Unite members at the Village Hotel are engaged in the first walkout at a major chain since 1979, as they seek to win a real living wage, paid breaks and pay equality with colleagues in Edinburgh.
The action began on August 2, with the first picket the following day.
Unite Hospitality has now announced that Mr Corbyn, who has formed a new political party with Zarah Sultana, will address the picket on Friday, August 22.
Nick Troy, national chair for Unite Hospitality said: "Our members at Village Hotels are on the frontline of a growing movement to reshape Britain's economy in favour of working people.
"For too long, these workers, like millions across Scotland and Britain, have been subject to poverty pay, pay inequality, job insecurity, and so much more.
"Until they organised themselves collectively, they had no avenues with which to credibly address the issues they faced in work.
"Since this dispute started, they have won significant improvements to working conditions at Village. However, their employer continues to push back on key demands around pay equality and trade union recognition. That is why they have taken the historic decision to go on strike, becoming the first hotel workers to take industrial action in Britain since 1979.

"Unite Hospitality is proud to stand with our members in their fight for better pay, better conditions, and ultimately a better life. Hospitality workers will no longer tolerate the abusive and exploitative conditions which have come to characterise our industry. Across this island, the most precarious workers are organising, and our members at Village Hotels are leading the way."
Lindsay Southward, Group Director of Operations & People, Village Hotels, said: 'Of our 125 team members at Village Hotel Glasgow, only 13 voted for industrial action.
"We are proud of the investment we make in our employees, which helps drive our employee engagement score and retention rate of 83% and 76% respectively - both significantly higher than industry averages.
"We continually review our remuneration policies and align with industry best practice, and offer competitive employee benefits including two free memberships to Village Health & Wellness Clubs, subsidised food and drink, and discounts on all overnight stays.'

107% earnings growth over 1 year has not materialized into gains for Genuit Group (LON:GEN) shareholders over that period

Investors can approximate the average market return by buying an index fund. Active investors aim to buy stocks that vastly outperform the market - but in the process, they risk under-performance. For example, the Genuit Group plc (LON:GEN) share price is down 21% in the last year. That falls noticeably short of the market return of around 23%. At least the damage isn't so bad if you look at the last three years, since the stock is down 7.7% in that time. The falls have accelerated recently, with the share price down 13% in the last three months. This could be related to the recent financial results - you can catch up on the most recent data by reading our company report. If the past week is anything to go by, investor sentiment for Genuit Group isn't positive, so let's see if there's a mismatch between fundamentals and the share price. AI is about to change healthcare. These 20 stocks are working on everything from early diagnostics to drug discovery. The best part - they are all under $10bn in marketcap - there is still time to get in early. While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price. During the unfortunate twelve months during which the Genuit Group share price fell, it actually saw its earnings per share (EPS) improve by 107%. It's quite possible that growth expectations may have been unreasonable in the past. The divergence between the EPS and the share price is quite notable, during the year. So it's easy to justify a look at some other metrics. Genuit Group's revenue is actually up 5.9% over the last year. Since the fundamental metrics don't readily explain the share price drop, there might be an opportunity if the market has overreacted. You can see how earnings and revenue have changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values). We know that Genuit Group has improved its bottom line lately, but what does the future have in store? This free report showing analyst forecasts should help you form a view on Genuit Group What About Dividends? As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for Genuit Group the TSR over the last 1 year was -18%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments! A Different Perspective While the broader market gained around 23% in the last year, Genuit Group shareholders lost 18% (even including dividends). Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 0.6% over the last half decade. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. For instance, we've identified 1 warning sign for Genuit Group that you should be aware of. But note: Genuit Group may not be the best stock to buy. Aviation news Labor unions FacebookTweetLink Air Canada said it planned to resume flights on Sunday after the Canadian Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) acted on a directive from Canada's Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu to end the strike resulting in the suspension of more than 700 flights. The CIRB directed Air Canada to resume airline operations and for all Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge flight attendants to resume their duties by 2 p.m. ET (6 p.m. GMT), the airline said.
