Legal drama Mudtown goes behind the scenes of Newport court

BBC News15 hours ago
A new dual-language series is set to take viewers behind the scenes at a Welsh criminal court.Mudtown, starring an all-Welsh cast including Erin Richards, Tom Cullen, Lauren Morais, Lloyd Meredith and Kimberley Nixon, was filmed in both Welsh and English and is set at Newport Magistrates' Court.It sees magistrate Claire Lewis Jones navigate her loyalty to her community being put to the test, complicated by the re-emergence of past acquaintance Saint Pete, played by Cullen and dubbed "the Tony Soprano of Newport"."We're representing a part of Wales that isn't seen very often," said Richards.
Gotham star Richards, who is originally from Penarth, Vale of Glamorgan, said the Severn Screen production which will air on S4C in Welsh and UKTV in English was "one of my favourite projects that I've ever done"."I didn't even know what a magistrate was when I first signed up to this wonderful project," she told Lucy Owen on Radio Wales, adding she was advised by writers Hannah Daniel and Georgia Lee to spend time in courtrooms in both Cardiff and Newport to get a sense of what it was really like."You see a lot of courtroom dramas, but it's kind of heavy on the drama when you see it on TV."Obviously they're there to help people and do good for the community… but also in between when people were in the dock and it was just the people working there, they were just having normal conversations, and getting on like work colleagues do. Which I hope we have portrayed in the piece as well."She continued: "Magistrates are amazing. They don't get paid and they have to do a lot of training to get where they are. "They are dealing with quite difficult cases sometimes and every case I saw was just them trying to bring some sort of common sense to the situation."
Richards, who has a two-year-old son, River, and is expecting her second child, said she was able to relate to her character in many ways."Claire is a mother, she's a magistrate, she's trying to hold down a couple of jobs and, on the surface, she appears to be a good person, until the end of the first episode when Saint Pete comes into her courtroom," she said."We realise she's got quite a dark past. They call him the Tony Soprano of Newport and he asks her for a favour because he says 'you owe me one'."I've made mistakes in my past and I think we've all had roads that we've had to choose between. I've never done anything as bad as Claire, but I sort of empathise with that part of her."
She said it was "a joy" to work with Cullen as similarly to their characters they have a long history, with Richards introducing Cullen to his now-fiancé, and the couple living just "down the road" from her in Cardiff."It was really interesting because Tom and I have been friends for a really long time, I think we started knowing each other when we were 16 or 17," she said. "I just think the history that we have as people and the knowledge that we have – the mistakes that we've made, the parties we've been to, whatever we've done in the past – then transferred into our characters."Speaking about recording scenes back-to-back in English and Welsh, Richards said it was challenging at first but, after a while, her "brain just clicked"."It means that you get a lot fewer takes, because obviously you have to do it in both languages and you don't have any more time in the day," she said."A lot of things on Welsh TV, quite rightly, all the language is perfect. People mutate perfectly and they don't use a lot of English words. "But what I really enjoyed is that we portrayed the kind of Welsh that you would hear in Newport, through Claire, which is also the kind of Welsh I speak."It's not as sophisticated, but it is real and I really thought it was important that we are representing an area of Wales in that way, because that's how people speak there."

Little-known theme park is one of the best in the UK with barely any queues and new alpaca walks

FOUND below one of the UK's highest mountain ranges is a theme park with a human-powered rollercoaster and a solar-powered splash. While GreenWood family park located in Y Felinheli, below Mount Snowdon in North Wales, does not feature high-tech rides you'd expect to find at Thorpe Park, the little-known attraction claims to have "something for everyone". 5 Whilst it sounds impossible, this includes the Green Dragon Rollercoaster - the world's only human-powered coaster. Visitors must head on a funicular that takes them to a lower station, but in turn the weight of the cabin full of passengers brings the empty rollercoaster up to a higher station. The riders will then walk from the lower funicular station, back up the hill to the rollercoaster that then uses gravity to propel itself along the 250 metre track and 360-degree horizontal loop. The park also has the first solar-powered ride in the UK, which features a two-chute water slide around 60 metres long. Solar panels that generate electricity are used to power the water pumps for this ride. Unusual attractions in the park don't stop there though - the park has the Enchanted River Ride as well, where riders propel themselves along a river using ropes and paddle, seeing mystical creatures as they go. For a sensory experience there is the BareFoot Trail, dubbed to be the first of its kind in Wales. Visitors walk barefoot through different terrains including sand, straw, timber and water. Elsewhere at the TripAdvisor Traveller's Choice Award 2025 attraction, visitors can also head on a dry version of sledging, TreeTop Towers with netted walkways and tube slides and the Forest Glider - a 75 metre 'slide' in rubber rings. Smaller children can enjoy the Tunnel Warren, Dragon Maze, mini diggers and tractors and a giant jumping pillow as well. At Cwtch Corner, families can interact with farm animals and learn about their habitats, including goats, ducks, pigs, guinea pigs and rabbits. New for this year, the park also has some alpacas that families can opt to go on a walk with through the 17 acre forest park, by booking in advance. Don't miss the Snowdon View Point either, with panoramic views of Wales ' largest mountain range. And if the weather isn't ideal, then the park has an indoor Enchanted WoodBarn with soft play and a special area for children under the age of three. You do need to pay a fee to access the soft play, which is £3.50 per adult and £6 per child. Inside the WoodBarn is a cafe as well, selling family favourites like Welsh beef burgers for £11.80 and jacket potatoes from £7.25. For parents wanting a brew whilst the kids play, coffee and tea aren't expensive, ranging between £3.20 and £4.20. 5 If out and about in the park, there are food shacks as well, like Snowdon Snacks that serves a range of hot food including hot dogs and has a covered seating area. Or you could head to the Forest and Solar Treat Shacks for sweet treats including ice cream. Until the end of August the family park is running the 'Festival of Fun' with live music and entertainment such as circus skills workshops and arts and crafts sessions - all included in the ticket price. Make sure to check out a show, including magic acts, at the Forest Theatre too. Admission costs £25 for guests over one metre tall and £10 for those under a metre tall. Though, if you book through Picniq, you can grab tickets for £20 for visitors over a metre tall, and £7.50 for those under a metre tall. Or you could purchase a group of four tickets, for guests all over one metre tall, for £74. One visitor recently said on TripAdvisor: "[There's] something for everyone, from toddlers to teens (and adults too!) Another added: "It's a fun, affordable, and genuinely enriching day out for all ages, and we'll definitely be back if we are in the area." 5 A third noted: "We didn't really queue for anything." The main park is open between 10am and 5pm each day. Visitors can also extend their stay at the park, by staying at the GreenWood Tipi Glamping. The site features hot showers and a fully-equipped communal kitchen. Inside the tipis, guests will find a log burner and real beds. Then outside each tipi is a barbeque and a seating area. Four of the tipis sleep up to six people and the remaining two sleep up to four people and a one-night stay starts from £95. There's no need to leave your four-legged friend at home either, as each family is allowed "two well-behaved dogs" for a fee of £30 per dog. Using GreenWood as a base, there are plenty of other areas to explore nearby including Mount Snowdon itself, Zip World and Conwy Castle. The nearby village of Y Felinheli, sits on the Menai Strait submerged valley and has some pubs and cafes to explore as well. Wales is a great holiday destination with great family attractions for all types of British weather. Plus, Wales is home to the UK's biggest underground 'theme park' in caves – and it's twice the size of St Paul's. 5

'Nervous' The Repair Shop guest gasps 'I don't know what to say' as prized item dubbed 'part of the family' is totally transformed

A guest on The Repair Shop revealed she was speechless as a prized item dubbed 'part of the family' was totally transformed. Husband and wife David and Carol, from Wales, brought along a huge soft toy hound dog to be restored in Tuesday's episode of the show. The couple explained that the 53-year-old toy had been gifted to the UK Elvis Presley fan club by Elvis' manager, Colonel Tom Parker, as a thank you for travelling to see the star in Las Vegas. The fan club looked after the toy for sometime before a fan won it in a competition - however she tragically passed away earlier this year. David and Carol said the former owner wanted the hound dog to be passed on to other fans of Elvis so they brought it to The Repair Shop to 'give him his pedigree back'. Toy restorers Amanda Middleditch and Julie Tatchell were tasked with bringing the hound dog back to its former glory. Amanda and Julie got to work and quickly realised there was much to be done, from torn fabric and shoddy repairs to its wooden beam sticking out of the top. They added patches to the weaker areas and relined the fabric to strengthen the toy, as well as reshaping the top of its head. After the duo had fixed u the dog, Carol and David returned and were eager to see the results. Carol shared her love for the giant cuddly hound toy but expressed nerves at whether it could be fixed as it had been on display for decades and was in a 'bad state of repair'. Her husband David added: 'We've become very fond of him, he's become part of our family. 'But, he's also part of the Elvis family, because of how important he is to Elvis fans. I'm just so looking forward to seeing him.' Amanda and Julie then unveiled the dog and both Carol and David gasped in delight. 'Oh my! He's wonderful, and he's taller!' Carol declared as Amanda and Julie unveiled the revived dog toy. 'Oh my! He's wonderful, and he's taller!' Carol declared as Amanda and Julie unveiled the revived dog toy 'I just want to hug him,' Carol added, with David saying: 'I don't know what to say, I'm just so grateful.' David went on to reveal that the hound dog will be taken around the UK on a tour to raise money for charity. 'We are just astounded that Julie and Amanda took on such a big project, Carol said. Her husband added: 'He'll be seen by so many thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands I hope.' Carol continued: 'Now he's back as he was in 1972.' 'Wow! Kept it a bedroom for 35 years! What a wonderful thing to have❤️,'; 'Oh wow, love this xx,';

Huw Edwards steps out with mini bottles of prosecco to celebrate his 64th birthday in Swansea

Huw Edwards stepped out to grab three mini bottles of prosecco to celebrate his 64th birthday on Monday. The disgraced BBC newsreader was seen returning to his car in Swansea, Wales after a brief outing to the shops. The Welshman wore a pale blue polo shirt and black trousers when he was spotted filling his car with petrol and buying prosecco. Huw pleaded guilty to having indecent images of children on July 31 at Westminster Magistrates' Court, including 13 of the most serious category A and one of a child as young as seven. He was among the BBC's highest-paid, with its accounts putting him in a pay bracket of between £475,000 and £479,999 for 2023/24. This was a £40,000 pay rise from 2022/23, when he was paid between £435,000 and £439,999. In May, it was reported Huw ignored pleas from BBC bosses to return the £200,000 he was paid after his arrest. BBC Chairman Samir Shah said the presenter has been asked numerous times to give the money back, The Sun reported. Mr Shah told Times Radio: 'We've been asking him and asking him and asking him. We're getting legal advice on it.' He made a direct appeal to Huw saying: 'If Huw is listening, give it back. Just give it back.' The former News At Ten anchor was on £475,000 a year at the time of his arrest in November 2023. While some BBC staff were aware he had been held, he was not sacked at the time. In April 2024 he was allowed to step down on medical grounds. At the time the Welshman was not dismissed despite some more senior BBC staff being aware of his arrest, with reports he paid a teenager £35,000 for sexual images later emerging last September. He was handed a six-month suspended sentence sparking outrage among campaign groups who branded it 'ludicrous, absurd and embarrassing' that he had been allowed to walk out of court instead of being sent to prison. At the time BBC boss said there were discussions regarding the six-figure sum Huw had earned following his arrest saying the BBC could possibly go down the legal route to retrieve the wages. Huw is currently being divorced by his wife Vicky Find, who is also the mother of his five children, with his £4.75 million Dulwich home also up for sale.
