Max Belyeu injury update: Texas baseball star could play against Oklahoma
Texas baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle said Wednesday he would "like" to get star outfielder Max Belyeu some at-bats during the Longhorns' pivotal three-game series against Oklahoma, which begins Thursday night.
Belyeu, the reigning Big 12 Player of the Year, has been sidelined since suffering a thumb injury while making a diving catch at Missouri on March 28. The injury forced him to miss 26 games, but recent progress has the junior right fielder on the verge of returning to action.

'He had a really good day (Tuesday),' Schlossnagle said. 'I think he's still working through some things, but he's super close, and I think the rate of progression he's had in the last week has been way faster than in the previous weeks. So we're going to get up there tonight and hit and we'll have a little hitting session (Thursday) in the morning and then, of course, BP before the game. So I think if it keeps progressing, I'd like to get him in there'
Schlossnagle noted last week that Belyeu's return would depend on his pain tolerance, but emphasized the team's need for his bat as the postseason approaches. 'We need him, whether he's at the highest percentage or not,' Schlossnagle said. 'Once he gets to a certain threshold, we need to get him at-bats. I don't want his first at-bats to be in the regional or maybe even the SEC Tournament'
Belyeu, who is hitting .358 with a 1.107 OPS and six home runs in 24 games this season, could also see time in right field if cleared to play. Despite initial concerns that the injury would make it difficult for him to squeeze his glove, Schlossnagle said Belyeu has been moving well in the outfield during his recovery. Texas enters the final regular-season series with a chance to clinch a share of the SEC title with a win or an Arkansas loss. Belyeu's return would provide a major boost as the Longhorns aim for a deep postseason run.

Canady has thrown every inning of the WCWS for the Red Raiders, all 504 pitches. Canady led her team to a Game two victory at the WCWS on Thursday, June 5 that forced the winner-takes-all showdown. Canady is a superstar two way player as she currently boasts a 0.97 earned run average, 317 strikeouts, .156 opposing batting average, but also hits .280 with 11 home runs. According to her agent Derrick Shelby of Prestige Management, Texas Tech wanted to reward Canady for her outstanding play and keep her within the Red Raider program another year. He said, 'Nija Canady is the most electrifying player in softball. She's box office and she goes out every day and competes. The decision to stay at Tech was not difficult. This program has taken care of her. They have showed how much she is appreciated. The entire staff, her teammates, the school in general have been great." ESPN did not report the amount of the deal, but her previous year's deal was worth $1,050,024, $1 million in NIL money, $50,000 for living expenses, and $24 to represent her collegiate number. However, reported that they believe the deal is at least $1.2 million. Again, it is safe to say that Texas Tech, a program that has never even made the NCAA post season would not be in the WCWS, much less the championship series, one win away from a national title without Canady. Teagan Kavan's ‘guarded' approach differs from NiJaree Canady, spurring Texas' WCWS run nonetheless
OKLAHOMA CITY — Every pitch Teagan Kavan throws follows a similar routine. She stretches her right foot ahead of her left, bends her knees, raises her left arm to check the pitch call on her watch as her right hand bobbles the ball. Her gloved left hand meets her right one, she winds up and lets it fly. Advertisement It's a symphony of movement — everywhere but her face, where her muscles are static. The hitter has no idea what she's thinking, and that's exactly how she wants it. 'I always try to have good composure for my team and stay strong for them, but also just growing up my mom has wanted me to keep my composure through everything,' Kavan told The Athletic. 'I like to stay locked in and be what my team needs from me. I like to show some emotion every now and then, but just let it out when it needs to.' Kavan's approach differs from her counterpart for Friday's decisive Game 3 of the Women's College World Series finals. While Texas Tech's NiJaree Canady is known for her electric 'NiJa stomp,' especially after key strikeouts, Kavan is unassuming, disguising a fierce competitor trusted to deliver the Longhorns their first national championship. Advertisement Kavan entered Thursday's Game 2 in relief with runners on first and third and allowed the two inherited runners to score in a messy sixth inning that included a couple of fielding errors, but that didn't shake her teammates' trust heading into Game 3. 'Every game she comes into she has just a super tough mentality and I don't think that's gonna change in Game 3 of this series,' Katie Cimusz said. 'I think if anything it's gonna make her stronger. I know she wants it for herself as well as the entire team, so I think she comes out there (Friday) with the toughest mentality she's ever had.' After Kavan found out Miney died, she knew she would still take the circle against the Sooners, telling her teammates that morning she 'was ready to go today,' Joley Mitchell said. She posted eight strikeouts in seven innings, including three in the bottom of the seventh to refuse any momentum for an Oklahoma comeback. 'This is where (Miney) wants me to be,' Kavan said. 'She always told me that she'll always have my back, and so I know she's out there and I know she has my back. I say everything happens for a reason, and so I think she just wanted to watch. 'I want her to see us hold it up for her and for this university, the first one, for the whole state and for these girls and these coaches. I just want her to see us end up on top in the best seed.' Texas coach Mike White predicted Thursday that Kavan will stay 'guarded' during the final game, but given the stakes, she might show a little more emotion to meet the moment. 'She's not going to wear her emotions on her sleeves but there's going to be moments where she's going to pump up and fire and show her emotions to her team to let her team know she's giving it everything she has,' White said. 'I think she'll do a little more of that than what she's done in the past.'

One specific area Alabama's defense must address to be a contender in 2025, expert says The start of the 2025 college football season is 78 days away, and 85 days remain until the Alabama Crimson Tide open the season against the Florida State Seminoles in Tallahassee. While SEC commissioner Greg Sankey and others are still trying to re-legislate Alabama's absence from last year's College Football Playoff, only 12 Saturdays remain until Alabama-FSU. Both teams are looking for bounce-back years in 2025. The Crimson Tide want to improve on a 9-3 regular season in Kalen DeBoer's first year, which included a blowout loss to Oklahoma in Week 13 that ultimately kept Alabama from reaching the first-ever 12-team playoff field. Florida State is in need of a hard reset. Mike Norvello's Seminoles followed up their 12-0 regular season and ACC championship from 2023 with a woeful 2-10 record last year that featured only one win vs. a Power Four school. One potential concern for Alabama heading into 2025? CBS Sports and 247Sports analyst Brad Crawford believes it's on defense -- more specifically, the need for Kane Wommack's unit to establish a pass rush. Per Crawford: "Make no mistake -- this should be a stout defense for the Crimson Tide, especially considering cornerbacks tandem Zabien Brown and Domani Jackson are being discussed as one of the best in the conference. But if there's one area of concern, it's the ability to produce havoc numbers on the interior and edge since Alabama's inexperienced beyond James Smith and nose tackle Tim Keenan III. The Crimson Tide need a difference-making campaign out of LT Overton, who has best-in-the-conference type of potential." Overton was recently named to the 2025 Lott IMPACT Trophy Watch List, along with linebacker Deontae Lawson. Lawson's 76 tackles were second on the team last year behind linebacker Jihaad Campbell, who departed for the NFL after a terrific junior season. Alabama's pass rush generated 25 sacks for 172 sacks yards. That ranked only 69th in FBS and was 14th out of the 16 SEC schools. Year 2 of the DeBoer era in Tuscaloosa will coincide with Alabama's first ever visit to Doak Campbell Stadium on Aug. 30. The Crimson Tide and Seminoles will kick off at 2:30 p.m. CT on ABC.
