Thrissur Pooram: In a first, two women to be part of ‘pandi melam'
THRISSUR : Throughout the 228-year history of the Thrissur Pooram, women have had a very limited role in either organising the festival or in its various performances — which has invariably come in for criticism from various corners. This year, however, two women are set to script history by participating in the Jithin Kallatt-led pandi melam performance for Kanimangalam Sastha temple.
Playing the chenda slung over their shoulders, Aswathy, Jithin's wife, and Archana will look to hold their own in an event that was hitherto the sole preserve of men.
'We have memories of the Thrissur Pooram from childhood. The rhythms of the melam and festivities have always been part of our lives. I never had a chance to learn 'thalavadyam' as a youngster. I thought of taking it up when my son started attending classes. It was the fulfilment of a dream,' Aswathy, who has been learning percussion for seven years, told TNIE.
Archana's journey also started when she sent her child for chenda classes under Jithin. 'I saw Aswathy there, and I was intrigued. I started taking lessons and that has led me to this,' she said. Archana has been learning to play the chenda for less than two years.
With the opportunity to perform at the pooram, the two are excited to be part of the festivities as percussion artists, rather than watching proceedings from the sidelines.
Their pandi melam performance will be set to the valamthala beat. Jithin, who has completed 10 years as a performer at the pooram, is also proud to be presenting his two female students in what promises to be a momentous occasion.

'Hari Hara Veera Mallu' pre-release event proposed at SVU Taraka Rama Stadium
TIRUPATI: The makers of the upcoming film Hari Hara Veera Mallu, starring Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, have formally approached Sri Venkateswara University (SVU) seeking permission to host their pre-release event at the Taraka Rama Stadium. In their request to the SVU Registrar, the production team assured that the event would be conducted in an organized and respectful manner. They also pledged to maintain the venue's condition and restore it fully post-event. Speaking to the TNIE, Tirupati SP V. Harsha Vardhan Raju said that while he is aware of the proposed pre-release event of Hari Hara Veera Mallu on June 8, no official request for police bandobast arrangements has been made so far. NV Prasad, a Tirupati-based film producer and close associate of Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan, confirmed to TNIE that plans are underway to host the pre-release event in Tirupati.

Giving up was never an option for me: Actor Maniyanpilla Raju
His next-door-neighbourly charm has been alluring to Malayali audiences for the past 50 years. His stint as a producer too was equally successful with many hit films including Aye Auto and Kannezhuthi Pottum Thottu to his credit. In an interaction with TNIE, Maniyanpilla Raju opens up about his journey filled with ups and downs, close ties with the 'Big Ms' of Mollywood, how the industry has changed over the years, how he happened to identify talents like Rahman and Prithviraj, and how he survived cancer. Excerpts: How do you reflect on your 50-year-long film career? I hail from a non-artistic background, but my passion has always driven me. After being rejected by the Pune Film Institute, I went to the Adyar Film Institute where I was selected as the first Malayali acting student. K Balachander and M N Rajam chose me for the screen test, marking the true beginning of my journey. I graduated in 1975 and started off with Mohiniyattom, directed by Sreekumaran Thampi. I was never ready to give up and that has made me what I am today. At the time, few pursued acting as a formal study. Did your family support your decision? I have been passionate about acting since school and viewed it as my path forward. My father used to tell me that I wasn't good at studies, so I should enrol for LLB (laughs out). During my time at the film institute, I managed with Rs 100 a month. Initially, I stayed in a good hostel in Madras, then moved to Uma Lodge in Kodambakkam. I shared a small, sweltering top-storey room with another person for Rs 45. Mallika, my classmate from Model School, introduced me to Sreekumaran Thampi. When I met him with my portfolio, he bluntly said I wouldn't make it in an industry dominated by Adoor Bhasi and Prem Nazir. 'Have you ever checked your face in the mirror?' he asked. He even advised me to return home by the evening train. But soon after, he called to offer me a small role in Mohiniyattom... and that became my cinema entry.
