Wales fly-half Sam Davies once again suffered Top 14 heartbreak as Pro D2 leaders Grenoble were beaten in a dramatic promotion play-off by Montauban in Toulouse.
For the third year in a row, Grenoble were once again beaten in the Pro D2 play-off match - with Montauban sealing their place in the top flight of France ahead of next season. Davies' Grenoble had finished the season top of the Pro D2 with a dominant 98 points - 21 more than sixth-placed Montauban.
However, as was the case in 2023 and 2024, Grenoble were unable to win - as Montauban continued their remarkable play-off run with a spirited 24-19 victory.
All is not lost for Grenoble and Davies though, with the Top 14 access match still to come.
That will see them face the second-to-last team in the Top 14 from this season, with the winner playing in the top flight next season.
Having signed a new three-year deal with Grenoble this season, the hope for Davies would have been that the French club could finally make the step back up to the Top 14.

Ultimately, despite 11 points from the boot of the 10-cap Wales international, that wasn't to be.
The Welshman was forced off injured after just six minutes of the match, using his jersey as a makeshift sling for his arm as he left the pitch.
However, his absence was short-lived - returning to the field 10 minutes later with Grenoble leading 3-0.

However, underdogs Montauban rallied back - taking a 21-6 lead in the early stages of the second-half.
The boot of Davies - as well as a try from Wilfried Hulleu - dragged Grenoble back to within two points.

With 13 minutes left on the clock, Davies had a penalty out wide to nudge Grenoble ahead, but his effort was agonisingly wide.
Thomas Fortunel knocked over a long-range penalty six minutes from time to extend Montauban's lead.
Desperately needing a try, Grenoble couldn't find a score late on - leading to wild celebrations from the Montauban fans.

The Blues have already been extremely busy since the end of last season. Brazilian winger Estevao Willian is set to make his move from Palmeiras official alongside Ecuadorian youngster Kendry Paez. Chelsea have also signed Liam Delap and Dário Essugo from Ipswich and Sporting Lisbon respectively over the past week. And those signings could potentially be joined by English wideman Gittens. As first reported by French outlet RMC Sport, the West London side have agreed on a seven-year deal with the 20-year-old to move to Stamford Bridge. Chelsea have tabled a £29.5m bid - although it's believed they'll need to go higher - and hope to get a deal secured before the first part of the summer transfer window closes on Tuesday. Gittens, an England under-21 international, was actually at Chelsea as a youngster as well as a host of other clubs. He eventually found his way to Manchester City but quit the club in 2020 as he became the latest in a long line of promising English talents to move to the Bundesliga. He has since gone on to make over 100 appearances for Dortmund, scoring 17 goals - 12 of which came last season. Coco Gauff beat Aryna Sabalenka to win her first French Open singles title, with the American forced to come from behind to be at the world number one at Roland Garros Coco Gauff produced a remarkable comeback win to beat Aryna Sabalenka 6-7 (5-7) 6-2 6-4 in the French Open final and quoted Tyler, the Creator as she celebrated becoming the new queen of clay. The victory saw Gauff claim her second Grand Slam singles title and become the first American woman to lift the trophy since Serena Williams in 2015. The 21-year-old had previously reached the final in 2022, but was thrashed 6-1 6-3 by Iga Swiatek and had to come from behind to triumph over Sabalenka. "I don't know what I've done to deserve such support from the French crowd but I really appreciate it," Gauff said after the game. "I'm gonna quote Tyler, the Creator, who said 'If I ever told you I had a doubt inside me, I think I was lying'. I'll leave that with you guys." Sabalenka, meanwhile, apologised to her team after the match for a "terrible final" and vowed to "come back stronger". The world number one said: "This will hurt so much, especially after such a tough two weeks playing great tennis in terrible conditions. Another terrible performance from me against Coco in the final. "I have to just kind of, like, step back and look at this from the perspective and try to finally learn the lesson, because I cannot go out there every time against her in the finals of the Grand Slam and play such terrible tennis and give those wins, not easily, but like, emotionally, you know?" The men's final will be contested on Sunday, with Jannik Sinner set to take on Carlos Alcaraz. Sinner beat Novak Djokovic in straight sets on Friday to book his place in the final, while Alcaraz defeated Lorenzo Musetti after he retired in the fourth set of their match.
