Amritsar hooch tragedy: Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann announces ₹10 lakh relief for victims' kin
/Chandigarh Chief minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday visited Marari Kalan village of Majitha sub-division to meet the kin of the hooch tragedy victims and announced a ₹10 lakh compensation each family.
The CM also said that the government will provide all possible help to the families, bear the education expenses of the victims' children, and provide jobs.
Interacting with media persons after meeting the families, the CM said such deaths are not merely accidents, but murders, which have been caused due to the greed of certain individuals. He added that the state government will ensure strict punishment to the culprits.
Mann added that the spurious liquor business could not have been run without political, bureaucratic and police support. The CM said that no one, whether a politician or a government servant, will be spared if they are found complicit in the hooch deaths.
Oppn hits out, questions govt's 'anti-drug' campaign
Several Opposition leaders, including Punjab LoP Partap Singh Bajwa, Amritsar MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla, SAD leader and former Majitha MLA Bikram Singh Majithia visited the grieving families of the victims before the CM reached the gurdwara to meeting the kin.
Bajwa said, 'This is not the first incident in the three-year regime of the AAP. In March last year, eight people died after consuming illicit liquor in Dirba assembly segment of Sangrur. Notably, the Dirba assembly segment is being represented by finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema and Sangrur is the home district of CM Mann.'
'CM Bhagwant Mann, you said the Majitha hooch tragedy couldn't happen without political, bureaucratic, or police support. I agree. But aren't you the head of all three? If there's complicity, accountability starts with you. Punjab doesn't need hollow statements. Charity begins at home,' the LoP wrote on X.
'This tragedy exposes the hollow claims of AAP's 'Yudh Nasheyan De Virudh' campaign,' he further stated, demanding the resignation of finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema.
Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring also demanded fixing of responsibility over the deaths, stating, 'In 2020, when a similar hooch tragedy took place in Tarn Taran, he (Mann) had sought the resignation of the excise minister and registration of murder charges against him. Now, CM should do the same.'
MP Aujla said that real and branded liquor is sold at a higher price than the set rates, due to which the poor are forced to resort to cheap and chemically made liquor.
Majithia said that nexus between ruling party leaders and drug mafia has been exposed once again. Talking to media after visiting grieving families, the SAD leader said the tragedy was the direct result of the nexus between Aam Aadmi Party leaders and the drug mafia.
Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar alleged that the liquor mafia, previously active in Delhi, is now thriving in Punjab, exploiting the poor. Jakhar alleged that the same people who crafted Delhi's liquor policy influenced Punjab's policy, leading to the current situation.

AAP govt led by Bhagwant Mann did nothing meaningful for Punjab: Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini
Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini on Saturday hit out at the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab, alleging that it had not done any meaningful work for the welfare of people. Saini further claimed that the Bhagwant Mann government in Punjab 'no longer enjoys public support' and that in the June 19 Ludhiana West assembly bypoll, 'people will decide in the right direction'. Comparing his government's initiatives with Punjab, Saini said, 'We give minimum support price (MSP) on all crops grown in Haryana. If our farmers' crops get damaged, we give compensation. Our government has given ₹15,500 crore to farmers in the last 10 years.' Saini, who was visiting late Akali leader Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa's residence, to pay respects, also recalled his ties with the veteran leader. 'I had a good relationship with Dhindsa for years. When his son Parminder was fighting the election, I joined them. When I was a Lok Sabha member, we used to travel together in Shatabdi,' he said. The Haryana CM lauded the veteran leader's contributions, saying, 'Dhindsa has guided Punjab in a good way. He was a person of great stature, having held many positions.'

Punjab: AAP attacks BJP's Sirsa over his 'tarnished legacy', claims Delhi is in decline under BJP rule
Ludhiana, June 7 (UNI) The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab has attacked BJP leader and Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa over his "baseless accusations" against the Punjab government. AAP leaders Malvinder Kang and Neel Garg attacked Sirsa's for what they described as his "questionable past and the rapid deterioration of governance in Delhi under the BJP's watch". They labelled Sirsa as unfit to preach to Punjabis. Kang minced no words in pointing out Sirsa's role as the OSD to Sukhbir Singh Badal during the decade-long SAD-BJP rule in Punjab. "Everyone knows what that era was about—corruption, the proliferation of drugs, and a complete collapse of governance. Sirsa was not just a bystander; he was a part of that rotten system," Kang said. He also highlighted Sirsa's "alleged misappropriation" of nearly Rs 1 crore of Gurdwara funds, which led to an FIR filed by Delhi Police's Economic Offences Wing in 2021. "When the law started catching up, Sirsa didn't turn to BJP out of ideology; he joined them to save himself from jail," Kang asserted. Neel Garg criticised Manjinder Singh Sirsa's role as a Cabinet Minister in Delhi, highlighting the "glaring failures" of the BJP government in just a few months. He pointed to the "severe water crisis brought about by the resurgence of the Tanker Mafia, daily power cuts reminiscent of an era when inverters were essential, and skyrocketing private school fees that have become an unbearable burden for parents". Garg also underlined the "closure of Mohalla Clinics due to staff shortages, the removal of bus marshalls that has compromised women's safety, and the delayed pensions leaving widows and senior citizens in distress". "These failures reflect the BJP's inability to govern and their dismantling of the systems AAP had painstakingly built to serve the people," Garg stated. "The BJP has dismantled everything AAP built in Delhi. The people of Delhi are already regretting their decision and are openly saying, 'We made a mistake, we want AAP back,'' Garg claimed. AAP leaders "reminded Sirsa of his hypocrisy in criticizing Punjab's AAP government while turning a blind eye to his own misdeeds and the BJP's failures". Harsimrat urges EAM to sensitise UAE govt on Sikhs' five articles of faith
Senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Saturday urged External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to initiate a dialogue with the UAE government to sensitise it about the religious significance of the five articles of faith, especially the 'kirpan', for the initiated Sikhs. In a letter to the minister, the Bathinda MP said she was making this appeal in the wake of a recent "advisory" by the Indian Embassy in UAE directing Indians not to carry sharp objects while visiting the country in view of Article 405 of the UAE penal law which prohibits the same. This move has caused deep distress and mental agony to Sikh travellers and residents alike, Harsimrat said, noting that there have been instances of Sikhs being detained and compelled to remove their 'kirpan'. She also cited a recent case of an elderly man being detained in Abu Dhabi for wearing the 'kirpan' and turban. Badal asserted in her letter that such incidents had caused distress within the Sikh community as they contravened the rights of Sikhs to practice their faith besides raising serious concerns about the protection of religious freedom for minorities in the UAE. "The Sikh community has always contributed positively to societies worldwide, including in the UAE, and demand the freedom to practice its faith in accordance with its tenets. "Denying Sikhs the right to wear their five 'kakkars' (Sikh articles of faith worn by baptised Sikhs), particularly the 'kirpan', is a curtailment of religious freedom and contrary to the principles of mutual respect and pluralism that India stands for," she said. The former union minister also requested Jaishankar to consider sending a high-level delegation, including representatives from the National Commission for Minorities and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), to engage with UAE authorities and relevant international agencies and sensitise them about Sikh articles of faith. She asserted that the 'kirpan' was a sacred symbol and an inseparable part of Sikh identity mandated by Sikh tenets since the time of Guru Gobind Singh. "Its significance is spiritual and symbolic, representing the duty to uphold justice and protect the oppressed, and not as a weapon for aggression or harm. The 'kirpan' is worn at all times by 'Amritdhari' Sikhs (initiated Sikhs) as a matter of religious obligation and conscience", she added.
