Teenager killed in mass brawl on Scottish beach
A 16-year-old boy has been killed in a mass brawl on a beach.
The teenager, from East Kilbride in South Lanarkshire, was found seriously hurt at Irvine Beach in Ayrshire on Saturday evening.
He died in the early hours of Sunday despite receiving medical care at the scene and in Crosshouse Hospital, Kilmarnock.
A number of people were on the beach during one of the warmest days of the year, Det Chief Insp Campbell Jackson confirmed.
Footage posted online suggested dozens had gathered on the dunes and officers have issued an appeal for any footage of the moment the teenager was fatally injured.
Mr Jackson said: 'An extensive investigation is under way to establish the full circumstances surrounding this death.
'Our officers are supporting the boy's family at this very difficult and heartbreaking time.'
He added: 'There were a number of people on the beach around the time of the disturbance. We believe several of them were filming at the time and may have footage of what happened.
'I would urge people to review the footage they have and contact police if they think the footage captured could be of significance to our investigation.'
This can be submitted anonymously, Police Scotland said.
Supt Jim McMillan said: 'We understand this death will be of great concern for the local community, but please be assured that we are doing everything we can to identify those involved.
'There will be additional patrols in the area as we carry out our inquiries and anyone with any concerns can approach these officers.'
The force said a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.
On Saturday, a 16-year-old was charged with attempted murder after a teenager was stabbed during a large-scale disturbance on Portobello beach in Edinburgh.
Police Scotland said officers were called to the scene on Friday evening.
A 17-year-old was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for treatment.
The force said the 16-year-old suspect is due to appear before Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Monday.

Vulnerable Scots pensioner missing as police launch search
Valerie Dyer was last seen in the Carrbridge area and was wearing a distinctive white floppy hat. A frantic search has been launched in an effort to trace a Scots pensioner. Valerie Dyer, 81, was last seen around 2.30pm on Friday, June, 20 in the area of Dalnahaitnach Hill, Carrbridge, in the Highland. Cops describe Valeria as white, 5 ft 6 in tall and is of slim build. She was wearing dark blue trousers, a light blue blouse and a white floppy hat when she was last seen. Inspector Kay Macrae said: 'We are growing increasingly concerned for the welfare of Valerie and extensive searches are underway to trace her.
