Legoete says government must be educated on importance of a well-capacitated SANDF
The committee chair said the department's budget decreased, despite a global crisis that has left more countries bolstering their military capabilities.
On Wednesday, Minister Angie Motshekga tabled a R57 billion budget – a marginal drop from 2024's R58 billion.
Legoete – an African National Congress (ANC) member of Parliament (MP) who currently serves as one of the committee chairs of defence – is refusing to stay mum as the department's purse continues to shrink.
'I have taken an oath of office to be loyal to the republic and defend its people, and I will be failing if I'm not honest. I also need to be another Mkhwanazi so that people must understand, we are getting sick and tired of being sick and tired.'
He said money over the years has not been used to capacitate the country's military, but instead to bail out sinking state-owned enterprises (SOEs).
Legoete said the country remains vulnerable.
'We are the only ones still at 0.7% but expect not to have porous borders, expect not to have the criminal elements that extort people, even on the cyber level, South Africa has one of the highest targets in the globe.'
He said the president and his government must be taught about a war cabinet and its functions, including how to override allocation of funds to favour security and defence.

Malema: 'EFF has never been in the pockets of criminals'
EFF leader Julius Malema firmly denied that criminals have captured the Economic Freedom Fighters. Speaking on Saturday at the party's 3rd Central Command Team meeting of the 3rd National People's Assembly in Bela-Bela, Limpopo, Malema said the EFF has consistently been at the forefront of demanding accountability from the state. The Central Command Team is the EFF's highest decision-making body between the National People's Assemblies. According to IOL , Malema criticised President Cyril Ramaphosa for allegedly failing to act on warnings from the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA). He said the EFF called for an inquiry after NPA head Shamila Batohi claimed 'sinister forces' had captured the institution. 'It was the EFF that wrote to the president, demanding an inquiry into Batohi's claims. Instead of acting, he coerced her into withdrawing her remarks, calling it a misuse of language,' Malema said. Malema also pointed to the EFF's 2024 parliamentary motion to establish an ad hoc committee to investigate extortion rings targeting businesses and residents. He said the ANC, DA, and IFP, which govern the provinces worst hit by extortion, the Eastern Cape, Western Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal, rejected the proposal. 'Extortionists and criminal syndicates celebrated that day, as their political protection worked in their favour,' Malema said. Malema praised KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi for exposing the links between criminal cartels and political figures. 'It took Mkhwanazi breaking ranks for the truth the EFF has always spoken to finally be taken seriously,' he said. Malema reiterated that the EFF remains independent. 'We have never been and will never be in the pockets of criminals. When we gave other parties the chance to stand against crime, they refused,' he said. Malema reaffirmed his support for Mkhwanazi and said the EFF would welcome him to join the party if he loses his position in the SAPS. The gathering was attended by members from the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) as well as other military personnel from various countries. Speaking at the event on Friday, Ambassador of China to South Africa, Wu Peng, said over the past 98 years and under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, the PLA has emerged from trials and tribulations and made an outstanding contribution to the liberation of the Chinese people. He said the PLA has made tremendous contributions to China's peaceful construction in safeguarding national sovereignty as well as security and development interests. Furthermore, he added that the Chinese military consistently serves as a resolute force in maintaining world peace and stability. "China firmly pursues peaceful development and exercises a national defence policy that is defensive in nature. The Chinese military actively fulfills our national responsibilities and obligations, extensively participates in national peace keeping counter-terrorism, maritime escort mission, and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief operations," he added. As a permanent member of the UN Security Council and the world's second largest economy, he said China is committed to promoting multilateralism with the international community, as well as upholding international fairness and justice, and building a world of lasting peace and universal security. As BRICS members, ambassador Peng said China will continue working with South Africa to consolidate mutual political trust and firmly support each other by expanding exchanges at all levels. "This also includes deepening practical cooperation in various fields, and promoting greater development in bilateral and military relations, so as to make new and greater contributions to world peace, stability, and prosperity." He said the PLA's journey has been marked the beginning of a journey characterised by resilience, transformation, and an unwavering commitment to the sovereignty, unity, and development of China. Moreover, he said South Africa and China are bound by a history of shared struggle and solidarity. Dabula said the judicial system needs to be looked at. 'They are a major contributing factor to this thing because they release illegal migrants on bail. There is no enforcement of the law.'
