King Charles Hinted He Also Has Issues With William Amid Reports There's ‘No Coming Back' With His Other Son Harry

Yahoo19-05-2025

With so much recent focus on the royal drama between King Charles and Prince Harry, which was only exacerbated by Prince Harry's recent bombshell interview where he discussed his desire to reconcile with his father and expressed that he didn't know how much time the King had left, it seems like people have forgotten about earlier reports about the King's relationship with his other son, Prince William.
The oldest child, William, is set to take over the throne when Charles passes away, and has been trained for the role his entire life. But recent reports have indicated his father might not be in a hurry to have William take his place, and that the relationship between them is also not as great. British royals expert Hilary Fordwich recently told Fox News Digital that there should not be an expectation of abdication, despite the King's health issues.

'Prince William has been assuming more responsibilities, and there have been preparations for more transitions of responsibility,' she explained. 'Both Prince William and Princess Catherine have been readying to assume leadership roles with an accelerated schedule of preparation for their future positions as king and queen. But most certainly, they are not in any way actively seeking an immediate ascension.'
Previous reports, however, seem to contradict the mood at the latest joint appearance for King Charles and Prince William, which took place at the Order of the Bath service at Westminster Abbey to mark 300th anniversary of the order. They also contradict previous reports on Charles' relationship with his sons, particularly those coming from Prince Harry himself, who has spoken about the subject.
In his memoir, Spare, there's a story about Charles telling Princess Diana on the day he was born, 'Wonderful! Now you've given me an heir and a spare—my work is done.' Prince Harry also describes Charles as a 'loving, but sometimes distant father' who rarely showed physical affection. And in the Apple TV+ series The Me You Can't See, Harry told a story about Charles telling both him and Prince William when they were having a rough time as kids, 'Well, it was like that for me, so it's going to be like that for you.'
Harry's relationship with his father is at an all-time low after his recent interview, with reports that King Charles won't speak to him, and sources saying, 'I think it's done … I don't think there's [any] coming back from that.
The Sunday Times pushed back against the characterization of Charles' relationship with his sons as 'distant.' The quote a royal insider as saying, 'I don't think he was emotionally distant. That was one of the great myths and one of the great untruths that Diana propagated, that Charles was cold and not fun with the children, and that she was the fun one.'
However, William's expression as he carried out duties alongside his father seems to support Harry's side of the story more. A friend of the Prince even told The Daily Beast, 'This is exactly the kind of medieval cosplay William thinks is ridiculous. He understands and respects tradition, but this kind of event is hardly telegraphing a monarchy which is modern and relevant.'
Prince William has spoken before about trying to modernize the British Royal family, saying last year, 'I can only describe what I'm trying to do and that's trying to do it differently and I'm trying to do it for my generation. I'm doing it with maybe a smaller r in the royal.'
And let's not forget Harry's account, in Spare, about the relationship between King Charles and Prince William. 'Pa and Camilla didn't like Willy and Kate drawing attention away from them or their causes,' adding that 'they'd openly scolded Willy about it many times.' The book also describes King Charles and Queen Camilla leaking unflattering stories about Prince William and Kate Middleton to the press. Sounds like anything but a great relationship.

A New Role & a Rare 2-Word Comment: Prince William's Subtle References to Prince Harry This Week

Another week, another set of appearances from the royals—and this one was a big one: Prince William made his first appearance in Wattisham, Suffolk as Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps, a position bestowed on him by King Charles in 2024, but more notably, one that likely would have gone to Prince Harry had he not exited the royal family in 2020. (The Army Air Corps is Harry's former regiment with the Duke of Sussex serving as a pilot with the Corps during his second tour of Afghanistan up through 2014, something he opens up about quite a bit in Spare.) When Charles made the announcement of William's appointment back in 2023 around the time of his coronation, it was a bit controversial, but also speaks to a larger issue that looms over his reign: Harry. (More on that in a minute.)As part of William's appearance this week, he also had the chance to chat with soldiers who were on a water break from combat training. It was there that the Prince of Wales brought up the topic of family, according to the Daily Mail. 'Is the pace of life good at the moment?' he asked. One of the soldiers replied that it was a 'mixed bag,' which is when William took that two-word phrase and ran with it: 'Families OK? See you enough? Some of them might not want to see you that much. It's a mixed bag sometimes.' Oof. Whether or not William was directly referencing the situation with his brother is up for interpretation, but it resurfaces the mounting pressure for the Prince of Wales and the king to extend an olive branch and make a public move toward reconciliation with the Sussexes—or put themselves at risk of this being the line that is forever drawn when it comes to their royal reputations. (My guess is that this is the opposite of what they want.)That's not to say that William and Charles aren't justified in their actions—two things can be true. As many reputable publications have reported, trust issues are certainly at play. Harry's perspective is the public perspective, for better or worse, but in the case of the monarchy, the family is intertwined so deeply with the business, it feels logical for an effort to be made to smooth things over if only to achieve some sort of closure that removes this asterisk on their legacy. Based on Harry's recent chat with the BBC, he's ready and willing, not to mention openly asking for it. The ball is in their court. The problem is that until they make a move, no matter how good Charles's (and William's) public performance is, the private family drama will overshadow and minimize those efforts. Like I said, there are bigger issues at play: A lack of trust, battles over security, so much. This royal rift runs deep. But the 'never complain, never explain' motto beloved by the late Queen Elizabeth II doesn't seem to be working here and the noise around this issue is getting louder. The choice is theirs. Festival brings 'big names in intimate spaces'

In 2022, comedians Charlotte Evans and Will Adamsdale began what was then Exeter's only regular new material comedy gig. Held in a tiny cafe, they said often the only noise in crowd was from a loud refrigerated meat counter. Three years later, Locally Sourced comedy has evolved into a four-day festival with more than 60 acts performing across 15 venues. Ms Evans said: "We never set out to make a festival, we just wanted a regular night to perform comedy. "It makes me so proud to see acts who started in front of the meat counter selling out their solo shows." Tim Key, Bridget Christie and Mark Watson were some of the big names performing alongside strong local acts at the festival which began on Thursday. JoJo Maberly performed her first-ever stand-up gig in Exeter three years ago and returned to the festival with her musical-comedy show Angst & Angstability. "It's so great to see the comedy world come alive in Exeter," she said. The success of the festival was depended on by comedians who said they were becoming increasingly priced out of the well-trodden routes to success. The cost of attending the Edinburgh Fringe, which served as a cheap breakthrough for so many top British comedians, has soared in recent years. In 2024 comics spoke out against "soaring costs" and "pure greed" which had prevented them from performing or making money at the festival. Comedian Greg Winfield, from Barnstaple, decided to go on a solo tour with his show Whatever You Say, attending the Exeter Comedy Festival but not Edinburgh. The comic of eight years said: "I think the old school way of doing comedy, of either moving to London or being on a relentless Edinburgh churn, is probably less important these days. "[Exeter Comedy Festival] the finest comedy festival in the South West - I challenge others to raise themselves to this level." All 15 venues at the Exeter Comedy Festival were independent businesses. They ranged from a cocktail bar, a vegan cafe to a barber shop, which was converted into a performance space. Alongside their shows, a number of comedians submitted pieces of art for a festival exhibition. Curated by Karen Lockhart, it features pieces by Spencer Jones, Emma Hughes, Olaf Falafel and others. Ms Lockhart said: "I wanted to give an outlet for all these comedians who also have something else going on." Festival organiser Georgia Thomas predicted the festival would continue to grow but it would stay true to having "big names in intimate spaces". "We wanted to create a festival similar to the shows you can see in Edinburgh and London without having to travel so far," she said. "Having big names in intimate spaces helps reduce the hierarchy which is good for them, good for local acts and good for us. "We'll keep the intimate vibe but grow the festival to benefit comedians, audiences and local businesses." Exeter Comedy Festival
