Mamelodi Sundowns are gearing up for their biggest Fifa Club World Cup challenge tomorrow, when they lock horns with Borussia Dortmund at the TQL Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio (6pm SA time kick-off).
Despite being deemed underdogs in this high-stakes encounter, the South African champions are brimming with confidence, ready to make their mark on the global stage.
Zimbabwe international Divine Lunga, one of the stand-out players when Sundowns secured a crucial 1-0 victory against South Korea's Ulsan HD in their opening Group F match, said Dortmund are the 'big guns'.
Lunga, who was a surprise inclusion ahead of the seasoned Aubrey Modiba against Ulsan, is acutely aware of the formidable reputation of their opponents, but is unfazed by the challenge ahead.
Lunga has received great praise in Zimbabwe's media since he is the first player from the southern African nation to play in the Club World Cup, and was part of the first African team to win a match at the tournament.
'Everyone knows what Dortmund are capable of. They are not a small team... they are the big guns,' Lunga asserted.
'Yes, we might be underdogs, but where we come from, people know who Mamelodi Sundowns are, and they know what is going to happen when you meet up with Mamelodi Sundowns.'
Eight-time Bundesliga champions Dortmund drew blanks in their opening game on Tuesday against Brazilian heavyweights Fluminense, while Sundowns moved to the top of the log after their 1-0 victory.
Lunga praised the team's tactical preparation ahead of the Ulsan clash.
Sundowns' triumph over Ulsan was more convincing than the 1-0 score-line suggests, with goal-scorer Iqraam Rayners seeing two more goals disallowed and Cardoso's men commanding 68% of the possession.
'We did well,' he stated, noting how they were able to anticipate Ulsan's game-play effectively.
'When they made changes, we were a bit surprised, but it was still going well on our side.
'I was happy about the win; we gave it our all, and everyone (in the team) fought to get a win.
'They were what we expected because we did analyse the games they had been playing before they came to the Fifa Club World Cup.'
Given Dortmund's recent struggles, most notably a disappointing draw with Fluminense, the German side might be more vulnerable than ever.
This presents Sundowns with a golden opportunity to secure one of their most illustrious victories to date.
Cardoso will have a selection headache because some second-stringers produced superb performances in the opening group match.
Newcomer Keanu Cupido, starting at centre-back, was one such player. He showcased his potential with a stellar performance, and emerged as a hero after he prevented a late equaliser with a crucial intervention.
Much to the delight of the travelling Sundowns fans, Themba Zwane reclaimed the captain's armband after a nine-month hiatus due to injury.
It will be interesting to see if Zwane is again in the starting line-up tomorrow.
Tashreeq Matthews, the young winger, came off the bench during Sundowns' impressive victory over Ulsan.
If he cracks the selection nod, he'll face his former club, providing a significant narrative twist to an upcoming fixture.
While his time on the pitch was limited, Matthews showcased his undeniable talent, getting into superb positions.
His ability to find space and create opportunities is a testament to his skills.

Currie Cup: Building an academy and depth key to Sharks' future success

The Sharks have backed their young guns to battle it out in the Currie Cup this season, which has led to some big early losses. The Sharks have backed an extremely young and inexperienced team for this year's Currie Cup, which has led to chastening opening defeats in the competition, 46-5 against the Lions and 64-0 against the Bulls on the Highveld. It was an unfortunate draw that saw the young guns having to take on the two Highveld giants, who have gone with a different player strategy for the oldest club competition in South African rugby, with both backing fringe players with plenty of URC experience for their campaigns. But throwing these youngsters into the deep end, while giving their senior players a proper break ahead of the coming URC and EPCR campaigns is exactly what the Sharks have decided is best, and it will thus be a baptism of fire for them over the rest of the Currie Cup. Big push Sharks forwards coach and former Springbok and Lions star Warren Whiteley revealed that the union were focusing on rebuilding their junior structures and giving these players game time in a big senior competition was key to achieving that. 'Neil (Powell, Sharks Director of Rugby) and Plum (Sharks head coach John Plumtree) have been really hard at work putting an academy back together. We lost the academy at the Sharks for over a decade,' said Whiteley. 'If you remember the Sharks of 10 or 15 years ago had a thriving academy where some of the best young players were developed. We had top coaches like Swys de Bruin, Ettiene Fynn and Ricardo Loubscher at the academy, bringing youngsters through the U19s and U21s. 'They were brought into competitions like the Vodacom Cup and Currie Cup, and although we know that our structures have changed now with the URC and Champions Cup the main focus, the recruitment and development of junior players is still crucial.' The right talent Whiteley explained that bringing in the right junior talent to the union was important and that it takes a lot of work to build the junior structures back up to the level it once was at, but that it would be well worth it in the long run. 'A player that comes to the province (at a young age) is more likely to stay in thepProvince. So Neil and Plum have been really hard at work over the last year or two, putting academy structures together, and bringing top coaches back in,' said Whiteley. 'We are now starting to put recruiting processes in place, and we know it's not easy because there is a lot of competition out there for quality (young) players. We also can't just go for talented players, but need to get the right players (to fit into our structures). 'It is important to get profiles on these players, to understand where they come from, their history, schooling and foundation. It is a process. And then hopefully what we will see is more players like Ethan Hooker coming through in the coming years. If we can do that, the Sharks will be in a really good place.' The young Sharks team are at home to the Cheetahs at 5.10pm on Saturday.

Kaizer Chiefs news: 25-goal Nigerian striker and Junior Khanye

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi has confirmed the club's pursuit of Nigerian striker Etiosa Ighodaro, who has quietly become one of the most effective forwards in the Betway Premiership over the past three seasons. Amakhosi are eager to secure his services permanently—but face a significant obstacle: Ighodaro remains contracted to Mamelodi Sundowns. The 24-year-old forward spent the last three campaigns on loan from Sundowns, gaining experience and scoring consistently at three different clubs: Chippa United, SuperSport United, and AmaZulu. Ighodaro, who has scored 25 goals in 88 Betway Premiership games, was meant to join Amakhosi as a free agent before the Soweto giants reportedly discovered Sundowns have a one-year extension option on the Nigerian star's expired deal…Full story here. Image: Goal Kaizer Chiefs are still in the process of signing Asanele Velebayi and Luke Baartman of Cape Town Spurs. Meanwhile, Junior Khanye has commented strongly. As reported in June, the Kaizer Chiefs thought they had secured both players as free agents. However, Cape Town Spurs responded by claiming that the duo is still under contract. Due to Spurs' dramatic relegation from the Motsepe Foundation Championship (second tier) to the ABC Motsepe (third tier), Kaizer Chiefs followed the PSL's rulebook, which states that relegation to the third tier makes player contracts null and void. The situation has stalled Kaizer Chiefs from announcing and registering the two players. While the legal battle is still underway, Junior Khanye has reviewed the two players' abilities. 'Out of the two Cape Town Spurs players Kaizer Chiefs are reportedly targeting, I really hope they succeed in signing Baartman – he's got the qualities to do well at the club. I'm not as convinced by Velebayi,' Khanye said…Full story here.
