To Beat Mosquito Menace, Andhra Pradesh's AI-Powered Surveillance System

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu is always talking about technology as the answer to challenges old and new. That is one big reason why the state now wants to use an AI-driven program to combat mosquitoes and vector-borne diseases.
The Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) Department of the Andhra Pradesh government is rolling out the Smart Mosquito Surveillance System (SMoSS).
This innovative, AI-driven program that uses IoT technology too, will be piloted across 66 strategic locations in six major municipal corporations, marking a shift from traditional "blind spraying" to a data-driven, targeted approach.
The AI-powered SMoSS, developed by a private agency, aims to not only curb the persistent mosquito menace but also reduce the operational burden on civic staff and lower costs for Urban Local Bodies (ULBs). The system leverages cutting-edge Internet-of-Things (IoT) technologies, including smart sensors, drones, heat maps, and traps, for comprehensive and real-time monitoring.
The pilot project is set to launch soon, with 16 locations in Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation, four in Kakinada, five in Rajamahendravaram, 28 in Vijayawada, seven in Nellore, and six in Kurnool.
A core component of SMoSS involves the installation of AI-powered smart mosquito sensors in key mosquito-prone zones. These sensors are capable of detecting mosquito species, gender, density, and environmental factors like temperature and humidity.
Crucially, SMoSS will automatically trigger alerts when mosquito density in a specific area surpasses a predefined threshold.
The data generated by these sensors will be continuously streamed to a central server and visualised on a real-time dashboard.
According to MAUD Department Principal Secretary S. Suresh Kumar and Director of Municipal Administration P. Sampath Kumar, this live data will enable precise monitoring and facilitate prompt, targeted fumigation, a stark improvement over the current less effective "blind spraying" methods.
Furthermore, the program will integrate drones for spraying larvicides. This is expected to significantly enhance efficiency by covering large areas swiftly, reducing chemical usage, saving time, and cutting costs.
The emphasis is on evidence-based spraying, preventing chemical overuse, and promoting public health safety.
To ensure accountability and efficiency, the operations will be entirely outsourced to specialised agencies, with payments linked to results. Citizen complaints and field reports will be actively tracked via mobile applications like Vector Control and Puramitra.
In a comprehensive approach to public health, the system will also receive daily reports on cases of malaria, dengue, and chikungunya from hospitals across the state. This crucial data will be used to identify mosquito "hotspots," enabling the development of special action plans for scheduled fogging and larval treatment in these high-risk areas.

During a review meeting on newly drafted Electronics Components Manufacturing Policy 4.0 at the Secretariat, he said Andhra Pradesh has a significant advantage in attracting investments in electronic manufacturing industries. He advised preparing an action plan to attract $50-100 billion investment in the electronics components manufacturing sector. The Chief Minister emphasised that the new policy should facilitate large-scale production and instructed officials to ensure the development of a conducive ecosystem alongside the establishment of industries. Officials informed the Chief Minister that the policy is designed to reduce electronics imports, boost domestic production, and focus on exports. They shared that last year, India imported electronic circuit boards worth $70 billion, highlighting the sector's immense demand. Chandrababu Naidu stressed that self-reliance in electronics and achieving 'Make in India' targets must be prioritised. He said Andhra Pradesh must launch large-scale manufacturing initiatives to meet international demand and also create its brand for these products. The CM also stated that the government will take steps to promote aspiring entrepreneurs, reiterating the coalition government's vision of 'One Family, One Entrepreneur'. He noted that cities like Visakhapatnam, Amaravati, and Tirupati offer immense opportunities for setting up IT companies. Allocating space for 500 IT companies in these regions can generate large-scale employment, he said. Along with IT and ITeS firms in Visakhapatnam, manufacturing industries can be developed from Lepakshi to Orvakal. He also directed the establishment of co-working spaces in these areas. The CM instructed officials to ensure job opportunities increase in Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, and other cities in the state. He stressed the need to integrate the skill development portal with other platforms to enhance youth skills in line with future demands. He also recommended updating academic curricula to meet emerging educational needs, thereby creating opportunities at the state, national, and global levels.

To ensure a smooth and secure transition, a planned system downtime has been scheduled for July 21, 2025 (Monday). 'No public transactions will be available at post offices on this day, as essential activities such as data migration, system validation, and configuration will be carried out,' he explained. The new APT application has been designed to enhance user experience with faster service delivery, improved interface, and increased operational efficiency. It reflects the Department's commitment to offering smart, secure, and citizen-friendly services. Customers are advised to plan their postal activities in advance and cooperate during this brief disruption. 'The inconvenience is regretted, but this initiative is a critical step in providing more digitally empowered and efficient postal services to every citizen,' Mr. Srikar Babu added.

Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu highlighted the growing significance of green hydrogen in combating global warming during his address at the Green Hydrogen Summit held at SRM University in Amaravati. He emphasised the need for power generation companies to engage in research on green hydrogen and its potential applications. In a special meeting with managing directors and chief executives of energy firms, Naidu remarked, 'I came here to hear your thoughts and learn about your innovations. I was the first to implement electricity reforms in 1999, which temporarily affected power availability. We now need to focus on low-cost green electricity production and storage. Andhra Pradesh should be the focal point for such research and innovation.' Naidu noted that the central government has prioritised green hydrogen, with NITI Aayog also focusing on this area. He expressed his vision of Andhra Pradesh becoming a hydro valley in the future, underlining the state's unique resources for the production and transportation of green hydrogen. The Chief Minister called for transformative changes in the energy sector, recalling that electricity supply was inadequate in previous years. He mentioned the successful initiative initiated in 1995, where they began generating power through the reverse pump system at Srisailam to meet high electricity demands. Naidu also pointed out that the production of green hydrogen could lead to the lowest electricity costs. He drew attention to recent steps taken by the Centre and NTPC towards establishing green hydrogen facilities in Visakhapatnam and announced plans for the development of ports along Andhra Pradesh's coastline every 50 kilometres.
