Washington Post28-07-2025
BUCHAREST, Romania — Torrential rainstorms hit Romania overnight into Monday, triggering flash floods in the northeast of the country and killing at least one person, officials said.
Hundreds of people were forced to leave their homes as Romania's rescue services deployed teams in the hard-hit counties of Neamt and Suceava. Helicopters and firefighters rescued residents, some of whom were trapped in their homes by floodwaters.

Colorado residents "nervous" as wildfire comes close to town of Meeker on the Western Slope

A wildfire close to Meeker in western Colorado has doubled in size. The Lee Fire west of the historic town has now burned an estimated 45,000 acres and so far firefighters don't have any containment on it. Several small neighborhoods outside of the town limits have been evacuated as the fire made a serious run Wednesday along Highway 13. The town of Meeker itself is standing by on a "set" status. The American Red Cross has set up a shelter for evacuees at Moffat County High School in Craig. Fire managers said on Wednesday night they are confident they will be able to prevent the fire from reaching the Rio Blanco County seat. The weather conditions are making the firefight challenging. Dry conditions are leading the fire to still rage in the nighttime hours when most wildfires usually settle down to a degree. "I'm feeling a little bit nervous, so I'm not going to lie," Joshua Quinn, who lives in the Meeker area, said on Wednesday as he watched flames marching closer to the town and heavy smoke filling the air. Sue Sprod lives close to Meeker and watched the "flames come over the hogback." "We feel like we do have a good buffer zone but I did get a little nervous this afternoon watching," she said. Sprod attended a community meeting Wednesday evening at Meeker High School led by fire managers, local law enforcement and U.S. Forest Service officials. They braced the community for the likelihood of several more days of high winds and dry conditions. The fire managers reiterated at the meeting that the buffer between the Lee Fire and the town of Meeker is holding. While the town waits on standby for evacuation, some in Rio Blanco County have already been pushed from their homes, like Stanton Gould. "I've been wrestling all my life and it's like sitting at a wrestling match, not knowing who you're going to wrestle in the next round," he said. Stanton says he's hopeful his home is still standing at the end of this, but he still has what counts. "I'd be more broken if it was a person or something. Everything you can replace, all it takes is money," Stanton said. Another wildfire is also burning close to Meeker but it isn't currently posing a threat to the town. The Elk Fire is located southeast of the town. During the day on Wednesday Gov. Jared Polis expanded an emergency declaration that was issued for the Elk Fire to include the Lee Fire.

Firefighters grapple with France's largest wildfire in decades

STORY: :: August 6, 2025 :: Firefighters work through the night against France's largest wildfire in decades :: Saint-Laurent-de-la-Cabrerisse, France :: Officials say at least one person has died Reuters video showed flames in the trees in in the village of Saint-Laurent-de-la-Cabrerisse, about 30 kilometres from the city of Perpignan, while firefighters arrived to tackle the blaze. One person died in Saint-Laurent-de-la-Cabrerisse, the prefecture said. The fire, which spread very rapidly through forests and villages, has burnt down at least 25 houses, forcing residents and tourists to flee. Many roads are closed. So far, over 15,000 hectares have burned. That is similar to the total area that burned across all of France in several of the past years, Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau said. He added this was the biggest area burnt by one single fire in France since 1949. The prefecture said the fire was progressing "very quickly" and that nearly 2,000 firefighters were trying to bring it under control. Around 2,500 households in the area were currently without electricity, it said.

Deadly 'unprecedented' wildfire rages in southwestern France

What is the current fire situation in France? More than 2,100 firefighters are still battling an intense wildfire in the Corbieres hills in a Mediterranean region of France near the border to Spain. They are supported by some 90 firefighting planes, including water bombers, and 40 helicopters, according to the latest update by the Aude prefecture, which leads the affected local government department. From Thursday, several dozen soldiers and three army helicopters will help battle the fire, which broke out Tuesday afternoon in the village of Ribaute in the Aude region, a rural, wooded area home to wineries. The blaze has since swept through 16,000 hectares. Authorities described it as the largest fire in nearly 80 years. Michael Sabot, the deputy director of Aude fire department, told France's BFM-TV late on Wednesday that the flames "certainly" wouldn't be brought under control on Thursday. This is because of the "unfavorable weather conditions," he said, as higher temperatures and strong winds of more than 40 kilometers per hour (25 miles per hour) forecast for Thursday would further dry out vegetation. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen offered the bloc's help early on Thursday morning to help bring the fires under control. Scale of the fire is 'unprecedented' French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou called the fire a "catastrophe of unprecedented scale," during a visit to the region earlier on Wednesday. This was the biggest area to be burnt in a single fire since 1949, he added. "What is happening today is linked to global warming and linked to drought," Bayrou said. One dead, one missing and 13 injured One person has died from the fire, 13 others were injured, including two seriously. An elderly woman died in her home, at least one person is missing and two people were injured, one of whom is now in critical condition with severe burns, according to the Aude prefecture. Of those injured, nine are firefighters. Several campsites and at least one village have been evacuated in the region, which is popular with tourists. Jacques Piraux, mayor of the tiny rural village of Jonquieres, said all residents had been evacuated. "It's a scene of sadness and desolation," he told BFM TV after visiting there on Wednesday morning. "It looks like a lunar landscape, everything is burned. More than half or three-quarters of the village has burned down. It's hellish." "I left everything behind me," said David Cerdan, a 51-year-old who fled the village of Saint-Laurent-de-la-Cabrerisse, where the elderly woman died. "I'm putting it into perspective. I only have material damage," said Cerdan, who lived near the victim. More than a dozen roads are closed around the region. The A9 motorway, parts of which were closed Tuesday into Wednesday, reopened Wednesday afternoon after the wind changed direction. The A9 is a major route for trucks traveling to and from southern Spain. It experiences heavy traffic in the summer due to tourists traveling along the French and Spanish Mediterranean coast.
