Arsenal's route to the Women's Champions League final

Having finished third in the 2023-24 Women's Super League table, Arsenal had to get through two qualifying rounds, playing three teams, to make it into the Champions League group stage.
The first saw them thrash Rangers 6-0, with Caitlin Foord netting four times, and beat Rosenborg 1-0 courtesy of a Frida Maanum finish. That took them to a second-round, two-legged tie against Hacken and after losing 1-0 in Sweden, they won leg two 4-0 to advance.
Things started badly for Arsenal in Group C, with them being thumped 5-2 at Bayern Munich in their opener, six days after which, in the wake of a 2-1 home loss to Chelsea, boss Jonas Eidevall resigned.
But with Renee Slegers taking charge from there, the team won each of their remaining five pool fixtures, defeating Valerenga and Juventus home and away before coming from behind to beat Bayern 3-2 as they claimed top spot.
Slegers' side took on Real Madrid in the last eight and were 2-0 down after a first leg played at the Alfredo di Stefano Stadium in wet conditions on a pitch branded a 'disgrace' by former Arsenal striker Ian Wright.
They subsequently turned the tie around back at the Emirates Stadium, where an Alessia Russo brace and Mariona Caldentey goal saw them triumph 3-0, 3-2 on aggregate. Chloe Kelly, signed on loan from Manchester City in January, provided two assists.

Arsenal again produced a second-leg fightback after a first-leg defeat, this time suffered at the Emirates as Lyon, managed by ex-Gunners boss Joe Montemurro, won 2-1 thanks to a late Melchie Dumornay effort.
Slegers saw her team bounce back with a hugely impressive performance in France, ruthlessly punishing their out-of-sorts opponents to triumph 4-1 on the day, 5-3 on aggregate, and set up the clash with Barca.
The tie was level after five minutes via a Christiane Endler own goal, Caldentey put Arsenal in front with a stunning strike in first-half stoppage time, and they then made the most of Lyon sloppiness after the break as Russo and Foord added finishes before Dumornay pulled a goal back for the hosts.

Arsenal are in the market for a new striker this summer and Gary Lineker was surprised the Gunners did not appear to target new Chelsea signing Liam Delap Gary Lineker has expressed his surprise that Arsenal overlooked Liam Delap in their quest for a new striker. The 22-year-old forward recently joined Chelsea from Ipswich Town. The Gunners have identified signing a new number nine as a priority in the summer transfer window, with discussions underway for RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko and links to Sporting CP's Viktor Gyokeres. Manager Mikel Arteta will hope that signing a centre forward will be the key to ending the club's over two-decade wait for a Premier League title. While Arsenal are in the process of bringing in a striker, Chelsea swooped in to activate the £30million release clause in Delap's Ipswich contract. Praising the move, Lineker thinks the forward should have been a top target for Arsenal. "Delap to Chelsea, interesting one," Lineker said on The Rest Is Football podcast. "I thought maybe Arsenal would go for him. Perhaps they did, I don't know, but Chelsea have got their man. "We'd said, didn't we, many times that Chelsea needed backup for [Nicolas] Jackson up top or an alternative. I think he's a young, exciting centre forward. I saw someone, I can't remember who it was, said they saw a bit of a young Alan Shearer in him. "I think that's the only thing that Chelsea were missing. I mean, Jackson's got something in him, but his finishing is not as good as it could be. And if Delap does realise his full potential, then that might just be the missing ingredient." While Lineker discussed what Delap could bring to Chelsea, it mirrors the qualities Arsenal have been lacking in equal measure. Lineker likened him to a young Shearer, and the Newcastle United legend commended the new Chelsea man's style of play. "I think he's a bit old-fashioned. He's like a throwback from what a centre forward was maybe 20, 30 years ago, where they were all in fashion," Shearer said. "He's always like aggressive, horrible to play against, doesn't mind mixing it up, and obviously scores goals. "I mean, the number of goals he scored in a really struggling team, that is only going to get better. I think at his age, the ability he's got now, I think he's got a really bright future and I like him." The 22-year-old netted 12 league goals for an Ipswich side that suffered relegation, finishing 16 points behind Tottenham Hotspur in 17th place. Meanwhile, Sesko, who is the same age as Delap, bagged 21 goals in all competitions for a Leipzig side that competed in the Champions League and narrowly missed out on the European places in the Bundesliga. The Slovenia international has played in European competitions for the last four seasons and scored 39 goals in 87 games during his two-year spell with Leipzig. Given his more established record for a side in one of Europe's top five leagues, combined with his potential to improve, it's far from unreasonable for Arsenal to have opted to target him over other options. However, any potential deal for Sesko could break Arsenal's £60m transfer record, currently held by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The 22-year-old forward was previously linked with a move to the Gunners in 2024 but signed a new contract last summer, thus increasing his market value. The absence of a consistent goalscorer at Arsenal was glaringly obvious this season. Kai Havertz led the scoring charts with just nine league goals despite a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to injury. This lack of a prolific striker played a significant role in finishing 10 points adrift of Premier League champions Liverpool. Man Utd face Bryan Mbeumo fight as striker drops clear summer transfer hint
Manchester United have already made one major signing this summer, bringing in Matheus Cunha from Wolves, and plenty more incomings and outgoings are expected at Old Trafford Manchester United are set for a huge summer as they look to bounce back from their worst ever Premier League campaign. United finished 15th in the league last season and failed to qualify for the Champions League after they were beaten 1-0 in the Europa League final by Tottenham. Ruben Amorim has already strengthened his squad with the capture of Matheus Cunha from Wolves and plenty more incomings and outgoings are expected. Despite their poor season, United do have money to spend with CEO Omar Berrada stating earlier this year: "We speak to Ruben very frequently. "Ruben has a good relationship with Jason Wilcox. They both share the vision of how they want to see the team playing. It is about planning properly for the summer transfer window and having a clear idea of what players we want to bring in. "We're making some big efforts to get us in the best financial position. Even if we're outside of Europe - I think we will be in a position to invest in the squad." With that in mind, Mirror Football has taken a look at some of the latest transfer news and rumours from Old Trafford... Mbeumo fight United are hoping to sign Bryan Mbeumo this summer, but Tottenham look set to try and hijack the move. Brentford boss Thomas Frank is expected to replace Ange Postecoglou at Spurs and Mirror Football understands that he wants to bring Mbeumo with him to north London. United have held extensive talks with Mbeumo, but are yet to reach an agreement with Brentford. Although the Red Devils are ready to offer Mbeumo a more lucrative deal, the lure of Champions League football and continuing to work with Frank could tip the balance in Spurs' favour. Hojlund hint Rasmus Hojlund has been linked with a move to Inter Milan this summer, but the striker has insisted he is "fully dedicated" to United. Hojlund managed just 10 goals in 52 games across all competitions last season and reports have claimed that Inter are ready to offer him an escape route. However, when asked about his future while on international duty with Denmark, Hojlund said: "I have a contract until 2030, so I expect to play for Manchester United. "I'm looking forward to going on a summer vacation, and then I'm fully dedicated to the project that's underway. I know I can't get much out of reading things. I know what the facts are, and that is that I have a contract with Manchester United until 2030. I expect to play there, so I'm just getting ready for some summer vacation and then hopefully a good pre-season." Garnacho offered exit Mirror Football understands that Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr are interested in signing Alejandro Garnacho. Garnacho is expected to leave Old Trafford this summer and Al-Nassr have emerged as a potential destination, with the Argentine viewed as an alternative target to Luis Diaz after Liverpool made it clear they do not want to sell him. United have also had enquiries from Saudi Arabia about Jadon Sancho after Chelsea decided to pay a £5m penalty fee instead of signing him permanently after a loan spell at Stamford Bridge.

Sesko talks scheduled Arsenal are set for more talks for the transfer of Benjamin Sesko, as the Gunners attempt to finally land a new forward. There is no agreement in place between the north London side and RB Leipzig just yet but they have already pencilled in another round of talks with positive feelings over reaching an agreement according to Sky Sports Germany. Leipzig still await an official offer from Arsenal, and have placed a price-tag of £60m on the 22-year-old star. Striker convinced Arsenal are solely focused on landing Benjamin Sesko and advancing their course to get a deal over the line, with no move for Viktor Gyokores expected currently, per reports. The deal is said to be advancing well for Sesko, as the consensus appears, with Mikel Arteta proving convincing. It is claimed that Sesko has been 'sold on Arteta's project' having decided to remain in Germany last season amid the Gunners' long-term interest. The 41-cap Slovenia international now appears prepared to leave. Zubimendi concern Martin Zubimendi has two reasons to reject a move to Arsenal with Real Madrid lurking in wait. The Gunners have an agreement in place with Real Sociedad over the transfer but Zubimendi has yet to have a medical and has said he expects a long summer. Reports in Spain suggest that Zubimendi would prefer to remain in his home nation however, eve if he is to leave Real Sociedad. AS claim Zubimendi is 'attracted' to the idea of playing for Real Madrid under Alonso too, having previously played under him for Real Sociedad B. Real Madrid are interested in the 26-year-old and new Los Blancos boss Xabi Alonso is said to have made the player his primary target.
