LONDON (AP) — French Open surprise semifinalist Loïs Boisson has lost in the first round of qualifying for Wimbledon.
The 22-year-old Boisson was beaten 6-2, 6-7 (1), 6-4 on Tuesday against No. 197-ranked Carson Branstine of Canada in a rare match for the French player on grass at the Roehampton qualifying venue.

Boisson soared from No. 361 to No. 65 after her deep run at Roland-Garros in her Grand Slam main draw singles debut, and was top-seeded in the Wimbledon qualifying draw.
Being denied a wild card into the Wimbledon main draw provoked criticism in France of tournament organizers in London.
Boisson beat top-10 players Jessica Pegula and Mirra Andreeva at the French Open before losing to eventual champion Coco Gauff.
The Wimbledon main draw starts Monday.

Neymar extends contract with Santos until the end of 2025

Associated Press SAO PAULO (AP) — Neymar has extended his contract with Brazilian club Santos until the end of December. The 33-year-old forward returned to his boyhood club in late January but has been limited by injuries. His current deal was set to expire next week. Neymar and Santos confirmed the extension Tuesday. 'I extended my contract with Santos. I went, I came back and I stay where it all began and where it will never end,' Neymar said in a video on his social media channels. Neither side explained why he did not extend his contract until the middle of 2026, when many Brazilians still expect him to play in the World Cup. Earlier in June, new Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti hinted he is counting on Neymar's recovery to play in the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Since he left Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal for Santos, Neymar has played 12 matches, scored three goals and provided three assists. He had two extended periods of absence due to muscle injuries. Neymar played 225 matches for Santos in his first spell. He scored 138 goals, many of them key to winning six titles at the Brazilian giant, which was relegated in 2023 and returned to the top division last year. His latest appearance for the team was a frustrating one; he was sent off in the 76th minute of Santos' 1-0 loss to Botafogo at home on June 1 after using his hand to score. Realizing he was not going to reach the ball with his head before a defender could clear it away, Neymar used his right hand to push the ball into the net. The Brazil forward already had a yellow card and was shown his second by the referee, who then disallowed the goal. Botafogo then scored the winner in the 86th. Saudi club Al-Hilal terminated Neymar's contract with mutual consent, six months early, after he played only seven matches. An ACL injury sidelined him for a year until October. Al-Hilal said Neymar could no longer perform like he used to. Neymar also left Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain to criticism, despite delivering silverware and goals. Santos is in the 15th position in the Brazilian league with 11 points after 12 matches. ___ AP soccer: recommended in this topic

Potential Nets 2025 NBA Draft pick Noa Essengue discusses leaving team

NEW YORK -- The Brooklyn Nets are running out of time when it comes to deciding who they will be taking in the 2025 NBA Draft that begins on Wednesday. Brooklyn has been projected by most outlets to take French forward Noa Essengue with the eighth overall pick in the Draft, but the pre-draft process also gave him a chance to explain what's going on. "It wasn't easy saying goodbye to all your friends at home, and specifically Ben Saraf," Essengue said to reporters on Tuesday as part of the pre-draft media availability that the NBA conducts every year. Heading into the Draft, there was a report from Donatas Urbonas of Basketnews that Essengue left his professional team, Ratiopharm Ulm of the BBL, that is still in the league Finals so that he could be part of the predraft process. "I mean, you know, that's always hard," Essengue continued while speaking about his decision to attend the Draft instead of continuing to play with Ratiopharm Ulm. "In one case, you can play the playoff final in your life, but you know, the drafts like really something special in your life for a basketball player. That's maybe gonna be like my best day of my life... That's my choice, and I know I trust my teammates. I know they can do the job." Essengue, 18, has helped his draft stock tremendously over the past couple of months with the way that he's played for Ratiopharm Ulm as the team is looking to win the German League Finals. While Essengue could have stayed to help the team win like his teammate Ben Saraf, who is projected to be a first-round pick, the 6-foot-10 forward decided to take in what's left of the NBA predraft process. "Yeah. I mean, we got a good impression," Essengue said when asked what his conversations with Brooklyn have been like given that he wasn't able to work out for any teams. "That was pretty cool, you know? Good feeling, nice people on the team. Nice people around me. So, that was pretty cool." Essengue could very well be wearing a Nets hat by the time the first round comes around on Wednesday.
