Guwahati: Senior
Congress leader
and leader of the opposition in Assam assembly, Debabrata Saikia, wrote to CM
Himanta Biswa Sarma
, urging him to stay the eviction in Goalpara and to provide alternate land to those evicted and those yet to be evicted.
A total of 667 families were evicted for allegedly encroaching over 600 bighas of land at Hasilabeel village under Balijana revenue circle in lower Assam's Goalpara district. The families mostly belong to the Bengali-speaking Muslim community, officials said.
Saikia urged the CM to direct the Goalpara district commissioner not to evict the people until the CM meets with the people of the village on June 18.
"We have already stated that we will cooperate with the govt to free the land from encroachers, subject to compliance with various guidelines issued by the Supreme Court, and also laws and rules enacted by the Assam Legislative Assembly for eviction of landless people and rehabilitation, in case they are evicted from govt land, Khas land, reserve land, etc," he added.
He said it was apparent that the people occupying the land in question were living there as they had no alternative land to build their houses and provide shelter to their families.
He also directed a Congress delegation, led by chief whip of the party in the Assembly Wazed Ali Choudhury, to visit the eviction site at the earliest and submit a memorandum to the governor, urging him to ensure fair practice and extend all help for rehabilitation, in case eviction of citizens is carried out from the presently occupied land by the govt as per rules.
On the other hand, an eight-member Congress delegation was stopped by Assam Police and local authorities from visiting the eviction site. Police put up barricades at Hashila Beel in Goalpara to stop the Congress MLAs from proceeding.

World supports India's stand against Pak terrorism: MP
Amalapuram (Konaseema District): Amalapuram MP Ganti Harish Madhur has stated that the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam was universally condemned, and India's retaliatory move Operation Sindoor has received widespread support from the international community. He was part of an all-party delegation led by Congress MP Dr Shashi Tharoor that visited the United States, Panama, Guyana, Brazil, and Colombia with the dual objectives of highlighting Pakistan-sponsored terrorism and explaining the necessity of Operation Sindoor. Returning to Amalapuram after the international visit, MP Harish addressed a press meet at Satyanarayana Gardens. He said that all the countries visited by the delegation extended complete support to India's anti-terror operations. According to Harish, in New York, the delegation paid homage at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, commemorating the victims of the Al-Qaeda attack on the World Trade Centre. Harish added that US Vice-President James David Vance expressed unequivocal support for India's stance on terrorism during their meeting. In Guyana, the team met with former President and current Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo, who showed strong empathy toward India's concerns about terrorism. The delegation also met with Panama's President José Raúl Mulino and briefed him on the brutal terror attack on tourists in Pahalgam and the objectives behind Operation Sindoor. Mulino expressed full support for India's firm anti-terror policy. In Colombia, Indian delegates explained the Pakistan-sponsored terror attack and the necessity of India's retaliatory action. Harish mentioned that, following the meeting, the Colombian government withdrew a social media post that had earlier offered condolences for casualties in Pakistan acknowledging the revised understanding of the situation. MP Harish stated that the diplomatic engagements held in all five countries, between May 24 and June 5, resulted in solid international backing for India's efforts to counter terrorism. Reaffirming that Operation Sindoor was a meticulously planned mission with zero civilian casualties, Harish extended his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu for allowing him to represent India's voice on the global stage.

Trump administration blocked from cutting local health funding for four municipalities
A federal court has temporarily blocked the Trump administration from clawing back millions in public health funding from four Democrat-led municipalities in GOP-governed states. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now It's the second such federal ruling to reinstate public health funding for several states. US District Judge Christopher Cooper in Washington, DC, issued a preliminary injunction Tuesday sought by district attorneys in Harris County, Texas, home to Houston, and three cities: Columbus, Ohio, Nashville, Tennessee, and Kansas City, Missouri. The decision means the federal government must reinstate funding to the four municipalities until the case is fully litigated. "The federal government cannot simply ignore Congress and pull the plug on essential services that communities rely on," Harris County Attorney Christian Menefee said. "Today's decision ensures we can keep doing the work that protects our residents - from tracking disease outbreaks to providing vaccinations and supporting vulnerable families." Their lawsuit, filed in late April, alleged $11 billion in cuts to US centres for disease control and prevention programs had already been approved by Congress and are being unconstitutionally withheld. They also argued that the administration's actions violate department of health and human services regulations. The cities and counties argued the cuts were "a massive blow to US public health at a time where state and local public health departments need to address burgeoning infectious diseases and chronic illnesses, like the measles, bird flu, and mpox." The cuts would lead to thousands of state and local public health employees being fired, the lawsuit argued. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The local governments, alongside the American federation of state, county and municipal employees union, wanted the court to reinstate the grants nationwide. But Cooper said in his preliminary injunction that the funds can only be blocked to the four municipalities and in a May 21 hearing expressed skepticism about whether it could apply more widely. The funding in question was granted during the Covid-19 pandemic but aimed at building up public health infrastructure overall, Menefee said in a statement in April. The four local governments were owed about $32.7 million in future grant payments, Cooper's opinion notes. The federal government's lawyers said the grants were legally cut because, "Now that the pandemic is over, the grants and cooperative agreements are no longer necessary as their limited purpose has run out." They used the same argument in the case brought by 23 states and the District of Columbia over the HHS funding clawback. Menefee said the cuts defunded programs in Harris County for wastewater disease surveillance, community health workers and clinics and call centres that helped people get vaccinated. Columbus City Attorney Zach Klein said the cuts forced the city to fire 11 of its 22 infectious disease staffers. Nashville used some of its grant money to support programs, including a "strike team" that after the pandemic addressed gaps in health services that kept kids from being able to enrol in school, according to the lawsuit. Kansas City used one of its grants to build out capabilities to test locally for Covid-19, influenza and measles rather than waiting for results from the county lab. The suit details that after four years of work to certify facilities and train staff, the city "was at the final step" of buying lab equipment when the grant was canceled. Representatives for HHS, the CDC and the cities did not immediately respond to requests for comment Tuesday.

No political comments will be made at Muruga conference, says TN BJP president Nainar
CHENNAI: BJP State president Nainar Nagenthran on Tuesday assured that the Muruga devotees' conference, scheduled for 22 June in Madurai, will remain entirely apolitical. Speaking at a press conference at the BJP headquarters, he said, 'Contrary to the DMK's expectations, no political comments or views will be made during the conference. Devotees of Lord Muruga from all political backgrounds, including DMK and Congress, are welcome to attend.' Responding to DMK deputy general secretary Kanimozhi's remark that the conference is a tool for the weak to gain strength, Nagenthran countered, 'The reality is different. The BJP alliance is strong, which is why we are being criticised. The media frequently questions seat allocation in our alliance but does not ask similar questions to DMK president MK Stalin or his allies.' He confirmed that Andhra Pradesh Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan will attend the conference, while Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath's participation is yet to be confirmed. Devotees from Malaysia, Singapore, and Colombo will also take part. Nagenthran released an audio cassette about the event. One of the organisers said massive arrangements are under way, including an exhibition featuring portraits and brief histories of saints who worshipped Lord Muruga, and a mass recital of Skanda Shasti Kavacham by over five lakh devotees.
