Runaway goat attempts to ram cyclist off bike in freak incident during Giro d'Italia
New Zealand cyclist Dion Smith got quite the scare during the third stage of this year's Giro d'Italia, after almost being knocked off his bike by a runaway goat on Sunday.
The bizarre incident occurred during the 160km stage of the prestigious race, which started and finished in the Albanian town of Vlorë, as the peloton was on its fast descent down a hill.
Smith, who rides for the Intermarche–Wanty team, said he had spotted a small herd of goats by the side of the road and moved to the right-hand side to avoid any potential collision.
Unfortunately for him, one of the goats decided to dart across the road, right into the cyclist's path.
Perhaps anticipating the collision, video footage showed the goat leaping into the air and brushing Smith's leg and back wheel.
The rider was pushed onto the grass verge as a result, but managed to stay on his bike and rejoin the road shortly after. Meanwhile, the goat appeared unharmed and trotted away.
'I didn't have too much time to think. I could see it 10 seconds before, the policeman was trying to keep them all in, and then one or two started coming across,' Smith said, adding that he still loves animals.
'I mean, what can I say? I didn't know which way I was going to go, and everyone else went left. I chose right, but in the end, it was fine.'
It's certainly not the first time a wild animal has caused chaos during the Giro d'Italia.
In 2023, a dog caused a pileup after running onto the road, forcing several cyclists to slam on the brakes in rainy conditions.
Speaking after this year's incident, Smith said he had been on alert for stray animals, but just never expected an issue with a goat.
'I probably expected more of a wild dog, but I guess there's a lot more goats down here,' he said, per Reuters.
'Albania's been great and it's beautiful down the south here. They've done really well and I've enjoyed it. It's been a different experience, just watch out for the goats!'

Morgantown falls to Hurricane in Class AAAA state championship, 6-1
CHARLESTON – The Morgantown High School baseball team fell to top-seeded Hurricane 6-1 in the inaugural Class AAAA state baseball championship on Saturday night at GoMart Ballpark in Charleston. Hurricane starting pitcher Weston Smith struck out 13 batters, allowing only three hits and one unearned run in the contest after a shaky start. But the 2025 WV Gatorade Player of the Year settled in and led his team to a fifth state title for the Redskins, and the first Class AAAA state title ever. 'Whenever the defense steps up and when your team is swinging the bat pretty well, it makes it pretty easy to settle in for your guys,' Smith said. 'That's what you prepare for all season. All winter, we are working, trying to get ready. It showed today.' 'Listen, I love this group,' MHS head coach Pat Sherald said. 'I'm just so proud of them. They're a very mature group of young men who showed up every day and did everything we asked while working their butts off. Unfortunately, we came up short today against a very talented team and pitcher. We knew we would have to scratch and claw for every opportunity, and we played this year with that mentality.' MHS jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning after a pair of defensive miscues and an infield single made way for Vinnie Aloi's groundout that brought Weston Mazey home for a 1–0 advantage. Hurricane responded in the bottom of the second as Braylan Hutchison tied the game with an RBI double, and Brady Rigney followed with a run-scoring groundout to give the Redskins a 2–1 lead. The Redskins loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth, threatening to extend the lead. Tyler Baxter lofted a high fly ball to left field, but a miscommunication in the outfield allowed it to drop, clearing the bases and extending the lead to 5–1. Hurricane added a sixth before the end of the inning to lead 6-1 after four innings. Morgantown threatened in the sixth, putting runners on second and third with one out, but Smith responded once again and escaped the jam with another strikeout to keep the advantage at five runs. Morgantown finishes its 2025 campaign with 27 wins as Region I and OVAC 5A champions. It was the first appearance for MHS in a state title game since 1976. 'This program has taken incremental steps all season,' Sherald said. 'If we keep playing for the name on the front of our jersey and keep a team-first mentality, I really like the direction we are trending in. This senior class is outstanding, and we will miss their impact on our team and program. I know the players see what our coaching staff sees and if we stay focused and keep working hard, we will get there one day.' Injured pitcher Cooper Eggert solidifies lineup at first base as Providence routs Lincoln-Way East. ‘Juiced us up.'
For a short period of time, Providence's Cooper Eggert said he felt sorry for himself. The senior pitcher was told by three doctors — including an orthopedic surgeon for the Cincinnati Reds – that he needed Tommy John surgery after injuring his elbow April 24 against Marist. 'When I found out from the third doctor that I'm going to need surgery, I went through a point in my head where I was struggling with it,' Eggert said. 'I felt bad through it.' Eggert snapped out of his sullen mood when Scott Mensik, his former coach with the Mokena Blaze, gave him some inspirational words to live by. 'He said, 'You can't look in the past and you can't do anything about it — just go out there, win another ring.'' Eggert said. That won't happen with Eggert on the mound. But after a stint as the team's designated hitter, he's now manning first base and helping the Celtics defensively and at the plate. His performance Saturday featured a bases-loaded triple in the second inning that sparked Providence to a 12-0 rout of Lincoln-Way East in the Class 4A Lincoln-Way West Sectional championship game in New Lenox. Eggert drove in four runs for Providence (27-12), which will play at 7:30 p.m. Monday against Catholic League rival Brother Rice (36-3) in the Crestwood Supersectional at Ozinga Field. 'That hit by Cooper — that was huge,' Providence coach Mark Smith said of Eggert, who has committed to SIU Edwardsville. 'It gave us a little bit of a cushion.' Cincinnati commit Enzo Infelise, Declan Kane, Dominik Alberico and Blake Jenner each had two hits. Minnesota recruit Nate O'Donnell and Alberico combined for the shutout, striking out eight. Jake Newman led Lincoln-Way East (28-11) with two hits. Senior left-hander Jack Bauer, an MLB prospect who recently decommitted from Virginia, gave up six runs in an inning-plus of action. Bauer, who made national headlines for throwing 102 mph earlier in the spring, has been on a strict pitch count this season. He threw 35 pitches in the first inning and finished with 53. 'We spent an hour taking hacks off the machine at 100 mph,' Eggert said of Friday night's practice session. 'It was hard. But the plan was to make him throw strikes. We heard about his pitch count, and if we got it up in the first inning, he would be taken out soon.' 'Bauer is special — really special,' Smith said. 'But our kids had great, competitive at-bats.' It allowed Providence to earn the 13th sectional title in program history. Eggert, meanwhile, has surgery scheduled with Timothy Kremchek, a longtime doctor for the Reds, after the playoffs on June 17. He's also prepared for a redshirt season in college. Still, Eggert said he's been enjoying his time at first base. And Smith likes having him in the lineup. 'He's had kind of a rough senior year,' Smith said of Eggert. 'He started out with a hamstring injury and missed the first couple of games. But this injury really hit this team hard. 'This is a very close-knit team. There are 20 seniors on this team out of 24. When one goes down, they all felt it, and it took us a while to get over that. When he came back, it just juiced us up a bit.' Count O'Donnell as one of the Celtics who is happy to have Eggert around. And then some. 'He's had a lot of ups and downs, and an injury like that gets in your head and can hurt your mindset,' O'Donnell said of Eggert. 'For him to come back and play first base for us is huge.'

ESPN teammate chides Stephen A. Smith as new SiriusXM Radio radio show drama continues
The list keeps growing of those annoyed by Stephen A. Smith's new SiriusXM Radio show. ESPN's Joe Fortenbaugh, who co-hosts 'Carlin vs. Joe' weekdays from 12-3 p.m. ET on ESPN Radio, called out Stephen A. Smith on Thursday over his new show that will now compete in that time slot in a back-and-forth that alternated between joking and serious tones. The exchange came on the heels of Michelle Beadle calling out Smith after the reveal that his new show would take her spot on SiriusXM, which led to her and co-host Cody Decker being fired.
