Man dies after SUV hit by train. Crash investigators believe he drove around crossing gate
A man is dead after being struck by a CSX train this past weekend. Crash Investigators believe he was driving around the crossing gate in an attempt to cross the railroad tracks when his vehicle was struck.
At 2:36 p.m. April 26, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police were called to the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and North Sherman Drive. on the city's east side for a crash involving a train. Officers saw a red 2019 Jeep Cherokee with damage consistent with being struck by a train, and it was determined that the SUV and a CSX train collided.
A man found inside the Jeep was taken to a hospital in critical condition, but was pronounced dead two days later.
Police announced his death April 29 and said the conductor of the train remained on-scene and cooperated with the investigation.
That crash was the first in two separate car-train collisions that happened within 24 hours.
At 5:39 a.m. April 27, a CSX train hit an unoccupied red Toyota Camry that was stopped on the tracks at St. Clair Street on the city's northeast side. The car was pushed to an area near East Michigan and North Pine Streets.
CSX told IndyStar that no injuries were reported. This crash happened 3 miles away from the fatal collision.

Authorities then 'initiated a water rescue' to try and save those trapped inside the car, per the WJPD. Three adults and two children were inside the vehicle at the time of the crash, according to a press release obtained by PEOPLE from the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP). The driver, Chineda Valcin, 29, was able to escape the vehicle, and another adult, Medgine Louis, 24, and a 5-year-old child were rescued before the car sank. However, a 27-year-old woman, identified as Kelita Alfred, and a 3-year-old child were pulled from the vehicle and sent to a Columbus hospital, where they were later pronounced dead, the OSHP said. Per the OSHP, Valcin was driving a 2016 Jeep Cherokee when "she traveled off the right side of the roadway, striking a ditch and coming to rest in a retention pond" around 6:30 p.m. local time. Footage released by WSYX shows police officers running across a field to rescue the individuals trapped in the vehicle in the pond. Screams can be heard in the background, while one person shouted, 'I need another life jacket!' Multiple fire departments, along with A2B Towing and Recovery, also responded to the scene to help with the rescue and assist the individuals recovered, the WJPD said. The two surviving adults were not injured, while the 5-year-old child suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Nationwide Children's Hospital for care, according to the OSHP. Vallow Daybell, who is representing herself in the case, was removed from a Phoenix courtroom Friday afternoon by Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Justin Beresky, the same day she cross-examined the man she is accused of plotting to kill. PHOENIX, Arizona (ABC4) — Lori Vallow Daybell is back in court, charged with conspiring to commit the attempted murder of her former nephew-in-law, Brandon Boudreaux. Daybell is charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree murder of Brandon Boudreaux, the ex-husband of her niece, Melani. Boudreaux alleges he was shot at while returning home on Oct. 2, 2019. Daybell is representing herself in the trial, as she did in her Arizona trial on conspiring to murder her estranged husband, Charles Vallow, where she was found guilty. Daybell was also previously sentenced for murder and conspiracy to murder her children, Joshua 'JJ' Vallow, 7, and Tylee Ashlyn Ryan, 16. She was sentenced to prison and is currently serving five life sentences for the crimes. Lori Vallow Daybell given 5 life sentences in prison for murder of her two children In the final chapter of the Lori Vallow Daybell trials, prosecutors are accusing Daybell of conspiring with her late brother, Alex Cox, to kill Boudreaux outside of his Gilbert home back in 2019. He gave emotional testimony of the events that took place that day, where he was reportedly shot at, but not hit. 'This defendant, Lori Vallow Daybell, has been charged with conspiracy to commit the first-degree murder of Brandon Boudreaux on October 2nd of 2019. The evidence in this case will prove to you beyond reasonable doubt that this defendant conspired with Alex Cox and others to kill Brandon,' said Prosecutor Treena Kay. Boudreaux said he went to the gym, then came home, and as he was waiting for his garage door to open, he noticed a Jeep with Texas plates on the side of the road that was parked awkwardly. He said the car moved in, the back window of the Jeep opened, and he saw the muzzle of a gun. At this point, he heard a bang and the window of his Tesla shattered. He immediately started driving, thinking someone had shot at him. Boudreaux then called 911 as he drove to the neighborhood pool. Police arrived and he talked with officers, realizing that someone had tried to kill him. Lori Vallow Daybell found guilty of conspiracy to murder husband Boudreaux also asserted before the jury that Daybell played a part in his divorce, claiming she influenced his ex-wife, Melani Pawlowski. The second day of Daybell's trial in Arizona was held on Friday, as witnesses and evidence were presented before the jury. Daybell was asked to leave the room after an argument with the judge, in which she had raised her voice in discussing whether her 'good character' could later be presented before the court. As the day progresses, evidence and witness testimony continue to be presented before the jury, including forensic evidence relating to the gunshot residue, provided by the detective involved in the case.
