Missing man found dead after vehicle swept away in Gua Musang

GUA MUSANG: A man who was reported missing after the vehicle he was driving was swept away by strong river currents in Kuala Betis on Tuesday has been found dead.
Gua Musang district police chief Superintendent Sik Choon Foo said the body of the 51-year-old victim was found about six kilometres from the spot where his vehicle was last seen.
"The Search and Rescue team, comprising firemen and police officers, discovered the body at about 10.20am, stuck between fallen tree branches approximately six kilometres downstream," he said.
He added that the victim had been travelling with two foreign men — a Bangladeshi and a Pakistani — on a work trip to Pos Bihai when the incident occurred at around 7.30pm on May 20.
"The three, who were travelling in a Toyota Prado, attempted to cross Sungai Suma when sudden rising waters flooded the vehicle.
"The two passengers managed to break a window and swim to safety, but the driver was unable to escape, and the vehicle was swept away by the current," he said.
The body has been sent to Gua Musang Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
"The case has been classified as sudden death," he added.

‘Water rushed in within seconds': Survivor describes deadly Tanjung Harapan boat accident

KLANG, June 7 — 'The incident happened very fast; the boat we were on capsized and filled with water before sinking,' recounted Chang Yan Qin Alvin, 17, who survived the overturned boat incident that claimed three lives in the waters of Tanjung Harapan yesterday. Chang is one of six individuals aboard the boat who survived, while two other victims are still missing. According to Chang, the tragedy occurred when the boat they were in, which was undergoing a test run, made an U-turn about 30 minutes after departing from the Royal Selangor Yacht Club (RSYC). 'The incident happened very quickly when the relatively fast-moving boat suddenly overturned, and in less than 10 seconds, water had entered all compartments of the boat. 'The situation inside the boat became chaotic, but I saved myself by trying to swim out before managing to sit on top of the overturned boat,' he said when met by reporters at the search and rescue location, Selangor Maritime Headquarters, in Tanjung Harapan today. Chang said he could only scream for help after realising other passengers were not visible and after about five minutes of holding on to the boat, another boat approached and rescued him. He said the fishermen in the boat then helped contact the authorities for assistance. 'I understand that this was the second test run for the boat, and before this, the boat was found to be in overall good condition,' he said, expressing sadness over the heartbreaking tragedy. In the incident around 5pm, three individuals, including a child, died, while a married couple is still missing. The victims are three-year-old Darren Gan, Cheu Son Hin, 50, and Fong Yong Sen, 29, while the missing victims have been identified as Gan Hon Tat, 32, and his wife Careen Man, 29, both from Klang Utama. — Bernama

Capsized boat at Tanjung Harapan refloated, search continues for missing couple off Port Klang

KLANG, June 7 — The search and rescue (SAR) operation to locate a couple who went missing after their boat capsized in the waters off Tanjung Harapan yesterday evening, continued today, with efforts focused on raising the sunken vessel. Selangor Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Enforcement and Excise Unit operations officer, Maritime Lieutenant Mohd Syafiq Sazali, said that the boat was partially refloated at 2.20 pm, after which the team began pumping out the water. 'The next step involves deploying divers to secure ropes to the underside of the boat to lift or elevate its front section,' he said. 'Once that is done, we will pump out the remaining water and inspect the vessel to determine if there are any victims' bodies inside,' he told reporters at the search site in Tanjung Harapan today. In the incident, which occurred around 5 pm yesterday, three individuals, including a child, were found dead, while a couple remain missing, after the boat they were in capsized in the waters off Tanjung Harapan, Port Klang. The missing victims have been identified as Gan Hon Tat, 32, and his wife, Careen Man, 29, both from Klang Utama. Tragically, their three-year-old son, Darren Gan, was among the three found dead in the front compartment of the boat, alongside family friends Cheu Son Hin, 50, and Fong Yong Sen, 29. Another victim, Chang Yan Qin Alvin, 17, was successfully rescued by a group of fishermen. Meanwhile, Mohd Syafiq said that the SAR operation, which resumed at 7 am today, involved four assets from various security agencies, in addition to three more provided by the Royal Selangor Yacht Club (RSYC). He added that the high tide significantly aided the efforts to raise the boat, as it still had some buoyancy, making it easier for the diving team to attach the rope needed to lift it. — Bernama

Three, including child, killed as boat capsizes in Tanjung Harapan, couple still missing, says Selangor MMEA

SHAH ALAM, June 7 — Three people, including a child, died after a boat capsized in the waters off Tanjung Harapan, Port Klang, yesterday. Selangor Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) director, Maritime Captain Abdul Muhaimin Muhammad Salleh, said the incident occurred at around 5 pm and involved six locals, aged between three and 50. He said two other victims, a married couple, were reported missing, while one victim was rescued by fishermen. The search for the two missing individuals continued this morning, with the firefighters conducting diving operations. 'The deceased victims are Darren Gan, a three-year-old son of the missing couple, and Cheu Son Hin, 50, both found in the front compartment of the boat,' he added. 'Also killed was Fong Yong Sen, 29, a friend of the couple, while another victim, Chang Yan Qin Alvin, 17, survived,' he said in a statement here today. He added that the missing victims were identified as Gan Hon Tat, 32, and his wife, Careen Man, 29, both from Klang Utama. Abdul Muhaimin said initial investigations found that the boat likely lost control before capsizing. He added that his team activated the rescue operation at 5.16 pm after receiving information about the incident. The operation was promptly launched, involving assets from the MMEA and supported by the Marine Police Force (PPM), the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), as well as passenger boats nearby. 'The capsized boat was successfully towed to the floating jetty of the Selangor MMEA headquarters before the search and rescue operation was suspended at around 8 pm,' he said. Yesterday, a video went viral showing the boat being towed by another vessel after capsizing in the area. — Bernama
