
Coffee may help you live longer, but skip the extra sugar

June 18 (UPI) -- Drinking a cup or two of coffee every day may help you live longer -- but only if you skip the heavy cream and sugar, new research suggests.
The research, published in The Journal of Nutrition, found that black coffee or coffee with just a little sugar and saturated fat was tied to a lower risk of premature death. But when people drank coffee with lots of sweeteners or cream, the health benefits disappeared.
"Coffee is among the most-consumed beverages in the world, and with nearly half of American adults reporting drinking at least one cup per day, it's important for us to know what it might mean for health," senior author Fang Fang Zhang of Tufts University said in a news release.
Researchers looked at data from more than 46,000 U.S. adults who took part in national health surveys between 1999 and 2018. They analyzed what kind of coffee people drank -- caffeinated or decaf -- and how much sugar and saturated fat they added.
They compared that data to deaths from any cause, as well as heart disease and cancer.
The results?
Drinking at least one cup of caffeinated coffee per day was linked to a 16% lower risk of premature death from any cause.
Drinking two to three cups a day was linked to a 17% lower risk.
No clear association was found between coffee and cancer deaths.
Researchers said people who drank black coffee or added coffee with low amounts of added sugar and saturated fat seemed to benefit the most.
In the study, low sugar was defined as about one-half teaspoon per 8-ounce cup. Low fat, meanwhile, was defined as about 1 gram per cup - equal to 5 tablespoons of 2% milk or 1 tablespoon of light cream.
"Few studies have examined how coffee additives could impact the link between coffee consumption and mortality risk, and our study is among the first to quantify how much sweetener and saturated fat are being added," added lead author Bingjie Zhou, a recent doctoral graduate at Tufts.
The study was based on self-reported food data, which may not be fully accurate. It also found fewer people drank decaf, which may explain why no strong link was found between decaf coffee and early death.
Still, the findings support the idea that coffee can be part of a healthy diet -- just be mindful of how much sugar and cream you add!

SpaceX's Starship explodes on test stand in yet another setback
A SpaceX Starship rocket exploded on a test stand in Texas, adding to a series of setbacks to Elon Musk's space ambitions that include trips to Mars. The huge blast enveloped the craft as it stood upright on a test stand, before massive plumes of flames and smoke mushroomed into the night sky, video footage of the incident late Wednesday showed. The incident shook windows and rattled dishes, according to local media reports. The rocket appeared to be undergoing a routine 'static fire test' of its engines. A static fire test is a pre-launch procedure in which a rocket's engines are fired while the rocket remains securely held down on the ground — essentially a rehearsal for the real launch, allowing engineers to test the rocket's systems without actually sending it into space. Musk said on X that a specialized bottle that holds nitrogen likely failed. 'If further investigation confirms that this is what happened, it is the first time ever for this design,' he said. No one was injured and local residents aren't at risk, the company said, calling the incident 'a major anomaly' as the rocket program prepared for its 10th flight test. The apparent destruction of the rocket extends the string of mishaps for a spaceship program that's central to NASA's plans to put American boots back on the moon — and also to Musk's grander ambitions to send cargo and people to Mars. The incident comes at a moment when Musk's business empire is faces falling demand for Tesla Inc.'s electric vehicles, and after Musk engaged in a public feud with President Donald Trump. Musk's company holds contracts with NASA worth around $4 billion to land the agency's astronauts on the moon using Starship, the world's largest and most powerful launch system. SpaceX has experienced Starship mishaps during ground testing before. The earliest Starship prototypes either collapsed or exploded during propellant tests on the ground, well before the company began conducting routine test flights with the vehicle. However, Wednesday's explosion marked the first Starship failure in years during a ground test. The company has also suffered explosive events ahead of static fire testing before. In 2016, one of the company's Falcon 9 rockets exploded as it was being loaded with propellant, a rare failure for a rocket that now boasts a more than 99% mission success rate. SpaceX is rapidly building and testing new Starship prototypes at its Starbase test site in South Texas, meaning the company can probably slot in another craft relatively soon for the next mission. SpaceX also follows a test flight regimen that entails pushing vehicles until they break to learn how they can fail, lessening the loss of any one vehicle. However, it's another failure after a string of in-flight setbacks, making it unclear when SpaceX will start achieving many of the milestones it needs to meet to unlock the promises Musk has made for Starship's future. Last month, SpaceX's colossal Starship disintegrated mid-flight after spinning out of control. That loss was its third consecutive setback after flights in January and March were cut short just minutes after takeoff when the spacecraft exploded over the Gulf of Mexico, sending debris raining down from the sky and disrupting air travel. January's explosion was caused by a propellant leak while the March failure was triggered by a hardware problem with one of Starship's Raptor engines, according to SpaceX. Starship 10 hadn't been assigned an official launch date, and it's now unclear when the next flight will take place. Following the failure of the ninth launch, SpaceX said it would carry out a data review and make improvements to the rocket system before the next test. Aside from the failures, SpaceX celebrated some key achievements last year when Starship's booster was first caught at the launchpad using large mechanical arms, referred to as 'chopsticks.' Designed to be reusable, Starship is meant to serve as the primary spacecraft for carrying humans to Mars and then bringing them back to Earth. Musk has said he plans to send a Starship rocket to the Red Planet carrying robots built by Tesla as early as 2026. As the world's richest person steps back from his political work in Washington to refocus on his business empire, it remains unclear how much time he'll spend on Starship and SpaceX, and what changes he'll make inside the company to get the program back on track.

Study: Wars with Hamas and Iran pose health risks for all Israelis

Rocket fire, missile strikes and sirens sounding every night have caused a "severe decline in sleep quality" since the Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israeli civilians by Iran-supported Hamas, according to a new study published in the International Journal of Clinical and Health Psychology. The study by researchers at the Hebrew University and Hadassah Medical Center doesn't include the recent weeklong war between Israel and Iran. Researchers say the study is the first of its kind to document the effects of warfare on civilian sleep patterns, which could have "serious consequences." "Worldwide, much research focuses on the war's impact on soldiers," lead researcher Shoham Choshen-Hillel of Hebrew University's Business School said. "Until now, no systematic study examined sleep quality for civilians on the home front under daily threat," Choshen-Hillel said. "Israel's situation is unique, demanding a different perspective." Data analyzed from 9,000 participants The study collected and analyzed data from about 9,000 participants who participated in three researcher-led surveys from January 2023 to January 2024. Analysis shows the number of Israeli citizens sleeping less than six hours nightly rose from 13% before Oct. 7, 2023, to 31% during the survey period. Poor sleep health reports likewise increased from 15% to 38%, and clinical insomnia cases increased from 4% to 20%. Nearly half of those surveyed - 48% -- reported sleep problems after the war with Hamas began, which is up from 18% prior to the conflict. "The shocking picture for us is that sleep hasn't improved for a year and a half," Choshen-Hillel said. "Symptoms lasting over six months are significant," she added. "This isn't temporary. It's a long period health-wise with major implications." Among those most affected are women and those who have had friends or relatives killed, injured or abducted by on and after Oct. 7, 2023. Iran war makes matters much worse Choshen-Hillel said the war with Iran and its potential escalation are making the problem worse. "It's clear the situation regarding sleep and other aspects is the worst since the war began," she said. "People now wake for shelters multiple times a night and anxiety has understandably intensified," Choshen-Hillel explained. "I have no doubt that the situation is worse than we previously documented," she added. "We find even those not in direct danger experience deep, lasting psychological impacts from the war, manifesting in sleepless nights." The study was published at the same time that Iranian strikes killed eight Israeli civilians during the overnight hours from Sunday into Monday. The strikes raised the civilian death toll in Israel to 24 and likely 25 due to one person missing but expected to be declared dead, The Jerusalem Post reported on Monday. The Iranian Health Ministry says at least 639 Iranians have died in the Israeli strikes there. Iranian strike on Israeli hospital compound An Iranian missile hit a hospital compound in Beer Sheva in southern Israel, where 400 patients were receiving medical treatment on Thursday. Dozens suffered injuries, but none were killed at the Soroka Medical Center, which still has about 300 patients. "Approximately 80 people were injured in the incident, about half are hospital staff," a hospital spokesperson said in a prepared statement. "All injuries were classified as mild or stress-related," the statement said, adding that the strike was the "most severe incident of its kind in the history of Israel's healthcare system." Iranian officials said they targeted a military installation located near the hospital, but Israeli officials said there is no such installation. "We are hitting with precision the targets of the nuclear and missile programs, and they're hitting the children's ward of a hospital," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a prepared statement on Thursday. "That's the whole difference between a democracy taking lawful action to save itself from these murderers and these murderers whose aim is to destroy every one of us," Netanyahu added.

Trump travel restrictions bar residents needed at US hospitals
'If international medical graduates can't start their medical residencies on time on July 1, the ramifications are so far-reaching that it is really unconscionable,' said Kimberly Pierce Burke, executive director of the Alliance of Independent Academic Medical Centers. Senior residents leave hospitals in June and go on to start their careers, she noted. Hospitals rely on new residents to replenish their ranks. The visas, for participants in cultural or educational exchange programs, are used by most medical residents arriving from overseas. Advertisement On Wednesday, the State Department lifted the pause on visa appointments, according to an official who spoke anonymously to discuss an internal policy change. It was not immediately clear how many, or how quickly, physicians could be granted their visas. The process now includes 'enhanced social media vetting,' intended to ferret out potential security risks, the official said. The administration also has banned or restricted travel to the United States from 19 countries. The restrictions may be extended to an additional 36 countries, including many African nations, if they do not comply with U.S. demands regarding overstayed visas and security concerns. Advertisement The bans and restrictions were motivated by a commitment 'to protecting our nation and its citizens by upholding the highest standard of national security and public safety through our visa process,' the State Department official said. Foreign doctors from countries covered by the bans and other restrictions could request a 'national interest exception,' according to the State Department. It was not immediately clear how that process would unfold. The American medical system relies heavily on physicians from other countries. One in five U.S. physicians was born and educated overseas, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges. New doctors from other countries account for 1 in 6 medical residents and specializing fellows at U.S. teaching hospitals. In 2024, the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates sponsored more than 15,500 doctors from more than 150 countries to fill residency or fellowship training spots at 770 hospitals. They work up to 80 hours a week on average, earning relatively low salaries. Residents are the foot soldiers of hospitals, critical to their operations, said Dr. Douglas DeLong, a semiretired physician in upstate New York who has worked in academic training programs. 'If you're a patient in a hospital, the resident is the first doctor you see in the morning,' DeLong said. Many foreign medical residents stay and build their careers in the United States. Most go into primary care fields such as internal medicine, family medicine and pediatrics, areas of shortage that American medical graduates tend to avoid. Advertisement Many of the 6,653 noncitizen doctors accepted for residency positions in the United States this year had already secured visa appointments before May 27. Those from banned countries who are already in the country are able to remain. But an estimated 1,000 medical residents were not able to obtain visas allowing them to work in the United States. The vacancies will have disparate effects on hospitals, depending how heavily reliant they are on foreign medical talent. At Brookdale Hospital Medical Center in the Brooklyn borough of New York City, people queued up for emergency care Monday. The lobby thrummed with visitors clutching bouquets of roses, and patients nodded off on benches, waiting to be seen. Like many hospitals in underserved communities, Brookdale relies heavily on international medical graduates who are not U.S. citizens to staff the medical and pediatrics floors and outpatient clinics. 'It's a wait-and-watch situation,' Dr. Christos Paras, who oversees the residency program, said in an interview. 'We just don't know what the impact will be.' 'We have residents from literally all over the world,' he added. 'I am not exaggerating — every continent.' Brookdale's internal medicine residency program relies on foreign medical graduates to staff about 90% of its 55 positions. So far, two noncitizens have been blocked from entering the country, said Dr. Conrad Fischer, director of the program. 'If I am missing two or three people, I can go out and get the spots filled,' Fischer added. 'But next year, we're not talking about missing two or three — we're talking about missing thousands.' They rely heavily on international graduates. New foreign doctors are not taking residency positions away from American medical school graduates. Just the opposite: This year, there were about 40,000 residency positions offered through the national match system, but only 28,000 graduates of U.S. medical schools. Foreign residents fill a crucial labor shortage. Hospitals are not allowed to overwork residents and may lose their accreditation as medical teaching institutions if they do. An insufficient number of residents could also cost them Medicare funds tied to graduate medical education. The noncitizen international medical graduates who make it to U.S. training programs are 'well-trained, well-qualified and motivated,' DeLong said. 'This is the new generation of physicians for Americans,' he added. 'These are the physicians who will take care of us as we age. They are the future of medicine.'
