Pretty UK market town has nation's 'best high street' and no abandoned shops

Daily Mirror2 days ago
Marlborough, a quirky and picturesque country town nestled in north-east Wiltshire, was last year named one of the UK's best high streets - and locals say they are "lucky" to have it
Residents of one of Britain's most charming market towns, Marlborough in north-east Wiltshire, have expressed appreciation for their bustling high street - describing themselves as "lucky" and "grateful".

The idyllic country town, situated on the Old Bath Road, the historic route from London to Bath, and by the River Kennet, is celebrated for its beauty - and it's easy to see why. Last year, The Times readers lauded Marlborough's high street as one of the UK's finest, ranking alongside esteemed locations such as Sherbourne in Dorset, Northallerton in North Yorkshire and Wells in Somerset.

Back in 2022, it also secured the runner-up spot in the British Harper Dennis Hobbs Vitality Ranking, which assesses the vibrancy and success of town centres. It comes after reports of a small fishing village with some of UK's best seafood but hardly any tourists.

Local Chris Robe praised the high street's resilience to the Express, attributing its strength to its clear identity. He remarked that it "hasn't sold out to big chains or businesses that don't fit the local vibe".
"When you walk through, you see independent cafés, butchers and bakeries, places with character," he commented. "That's what keeps people coming back, and it's what keeps money circulating in the community."
Another local, Mandy Kelsey, also shared her fondness with the publication: "It's a beautiful town. It has a lovely vibe with a great range of shops, cafes, and places to mooch around in. Yes, there are a range of rather upmarket shops, but there is a Wednesday and Saturday market for less expensive items if money is tight.

"We should be grateful the shops are full and nothing is boarded up and run down, be grateful for what you have on your doorstep. I love it."
A representative for Marlborough Town Council attributed the town's success to what is likely a "unique blend of everything on offer coupled with its scale", which has consistently placed Marlborough among the top spots to live and shop. They continued: "In a survey a few years ago, our own residents described Marlborough as a friendly, historic, beautiful market town, and we agree. In fact, we wrote it on the welcome signs."

The council considers Marlborough fortunate to boast one of the broadest high streets in Britain, adorned with an eclectic mix of architectural styles spanning various historical periods.
Described as "compact", Marlborough offers a treasure trove of "quirky yards, streets and alleyways" ripe for discovery, brimming with independent establishments such as cafés, boutiques, eateries, galleries, hotels, and even a boutique cinema.

The spokesperson remarked: "We're a friendly bunch, and all of our businesses will give you a very warm welcome." He also highlighted the town's vibrant cultural scene, replete with music festivals, performances, open studios for artists and artisans, and a literary festival.
Encircling the town is a breathtaking landscape steeped in history, featuring landmarks like Merlin's Mound, Silbury Hill, the North Wessex Downs National Landscape, the River Kennet, the ancient Savernake Forest and West Woods.

I visited a tranquil seaside village and couldn't believe how stunning it was

I visited a tranquil seaside village and couldn't believe how stunning it was The breathtaking coastal village left a lasting impression on one writer and her family The beautiful village impressed our writer (Image: Amber O'Connor) For anyone planning a staycation, North Cornwall could be a fantastic choice. It's home to some of Britain's most picturesque locations, including Newquay and Bude. Another popular spot is Tintagel, where both the village and its famous castle attract those interested in Arthurian legend. ‌ A 10-minute drive from Tintagel, there's a lesser-known village I'd recommend to anyone looking for a seaside escape: Boscastle. I was lucky enough to visit the small harbour village on holiday a few years ago, and I've dreamed about it every summer since. ‌ While Boscastle's charms won't surprise anyone lucky enough to live nearby, some visitors might consider it a hidden gem. I'm sorry to say I wasn't familiar with the village before our family holiday there, but it's now somewhere I'll never forget - and can't wait to see again on another trip. ‌ It's perfectly located for visitors planning to explore the breathtaking coastline, reports the Express. Here's what I loved about my visit and would recommend to visitors, plus what TripAdvisor reviewers say. Boscastle Amber loved her holiday to Boscastle (Image: Getty) Boscastle is the place to go for Cornish charm and stunning views. Tourists love the natural harbour (pack a swimsuit), clifftop walks, and tea rooms. We stayed in the village and enjoyed daily walks around the picturesque harbour. The views are hard to beat. ‌ On TripAdvisor, one review reads: "This is so beautiful and peaceful. The scenery is stunning... It has such a unique feel to it. Well worth staying or visiting it won't disappoint." Another says: "We have been coming back to Boscastle as a family for over 25 years and the harbour is still breathtaking." Swimming in the harbour, splashing about in the beautiful blue water, was a personal highlight. While I wasn't brave enough, it was lots of fun watching people jump off the harbour wall, and the ice cream we had once we dried off was delicious. Talk about memories that will last a lifetime. ‌ There's another fascinating side to Boscaslte too. It's long been associated with witchcraft. I'd recommend a visit to the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic. On TripAdvisor, a reviewer writes: "Superb museum. Informative and thought provoking. Some parts are potentially scary for younger children. Also quite narrow rooms if really busy. Well presented exhibits for those into witchcraft or just interested. Staff very helpful. We booked tickets prior to the visit which I'd suggest as it gets really busy." Tintagel Tintagel Castle attracts visitors from all over the country (Image: Getty) ‌ Tintagel is a must-see for King Arthur fans. We enjoyed exploring the village, and we were just as impressed by our visit to Tintagel Castle (English Heritage). With its dramatic location on rugged clifftops, walking among the castle's ruins feels like stepping back in time. It's easy to see why it's said King Arthur was conceived there. A place of legend and myth, the atmosphere is palpable, and the views are second to none. On TripAdvisor, one reviewer says: "Tintagel Castle is simply breathtaking. Standing there, surrounded by such rich history and incredible scenery, you can't help but feel a gentle sense of awe. The ruins, the cliffs, Merlin's Cave – it's magical, especially when the tide is low and you can explore more closely." Article continues below They added: "For me, as someone who is neurodivergent, it was a little overwhelming at times because it's such a popular tourist attraction. I think if I'd been able to visit alone or at a quieter time, the experience would have felt different – though perhaps more isolated, so it's hard to say."

Argos beats Amazon's 'lowest ever price' for colour Kindle with double discount

'So comfortable and light to hold and the battery life is amazing!' Reading is a hobby that many people enjoy as it allows you to slip into another world for a couple of hours, while also giving yourself some much needed time away from social media and the internet. While many people enjoy collecting and reading paperback and hardback books, these can quickly take up space in your home, which can be overwhelming if you do not have your own at-home library. In order to combat this, a handy gadget that is a must have for an avid reader is a Kindle. Storing millions of books all in one compact device, a Kindle can be easily taken anywhere without taking up any extra space. With a variety of models on the market, one of the most popular editions is the Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition - which usually retails for £269.99 on Amazon. Now while this is a hefty price tag, Argos is currently offering a double discount on the 32GB Kindle Colorsoft that shoppers won't want to miss. While already reduced down to £214.99 to match Amazon's current discounted price, shoppers can cut the price further by using the code RED10 at checkouts - dropping the price to £193.49. This is the lowest ever price seen for the Kindle Colorsoft, reports the Express, as Amazon's price tracker site CamelCamelCamel shows the lowest cost up until now being £219.99. The Kindle Colorsoft is Amazon's first ever colour screen kindle, which allows users to see book covers and in-book pictures in colour, making it an ideal choice for those who enjoy comic books and graphic novels. This is a major switch up from the older editions of the device which are predominately white, black and grey. Amazon Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition Product Description This colourful edition is also great for those who enjoy text-based books as it comes with a 7-inch display that shoppers have said is 'easy on the eyes'. It also allows users to highlight their favourite parts with colourful highlighters, including yellow, orange, blue and pink. Also equipped with a battery life of up to eight weeks, as well as a glare-free and auto-adjusting display, this device is perfect for long trips and for sitting outside in the glorious sunshine. However, for those not fussed about having colour and are looking for something cheaper, shoppers can also use the same Argos discount code on the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 2024 16GB. Retailing on the website for £134.99, savvy shoppers can drop the price down to £121.49 using the code RED10. Alternatively, for those wanting to step away from the Kindle, Currys is currently selling the KOBO Clara BW 6-inch eReader for £129. With a 16GB storage, this device can hold 12,000 books and will provide weeks worth of battery life. Back to the Kindle Colorsoft, it currently has a 4.5 star rating on Argos, with 85 per cent of the customers recommending this product to others. One happy shopper said: "I had this new Kindle Colorsoft brought for my birthday from my husband. What a great present I can even read faster on a Kindle as opposed to hard back. I love it and you can read in sunlight and in the dark no need to change any settings. Happy wife happy life." With another five-star reviewer adding: "I bought this item recently and I've found it to be really great, and I have hardly put it down, and it's much better than the one I used before, which froze on me a few weeks ago." However, not everyone was blown away by the device. One person wrote: "Great kindle, easy to use. Colour not great on it (could be more bold)." While another added: "Had to replace my older cheaper model (finally wore out after 7yrs) thought I'd treat myself to a more expensive model. To be honest it's no better than my last Kindle, but it's just as good so I can live with that." Despite this, a top reviewer wrote: "I was contemplating buying one for a while as I wanted to get back into reading and with the amount of different kindles out there I was drawn most to this one and I'm SO glad I did!!! "I've had it just over a week and have read four books already! So comfortable and light to hold and the battery life is amazing!!!! Do not regret buying at all." While a sixth customer gushed: "Absolutely love it, great for reading books and comics, battery lasts forever, just love it!" Pretty European island will be the perfect warm autumn escape

You will be able to enjoy sunny weather by heading to one pretty European island in the autumn. For those looking to escape the weather when we move towards autumn, there's no need to venture too far. ‌ Just off Africa's north coast, Madeira offers a warm retreat for holidaymakers seeking the last of Europe's balmy weather this year. ‌ With a warm climate year-round, the temperature averages around 23C in October, with November temperatures often reaching a comfortable 22C. ‌ Being less than four hours away by plane, the islands of the Madeira archipelago are a favourite destination for Brits throughout the year, and equally adored by Portuguese and German tourists. Travel giant TUI suggests staying in the capital, Funchal, where you can enjoy a blend of colonial buildings, churches, and relaxed squares, reports the Express. The old town's narrow streets are brimming with wine bars and family-owned eateries, while the marina boasts cafes and top-notch seafood spots. Funchal's cable car whisks tourists up to the leafy suburb of Monte, home to stunning botanical gardens. For a taste of Madeira's heritage, don't miss a ride on the wicker sledges from Monte back down to Livramento. ‌ Designated workers physically push visitors down the hill, an exhilarating experience that many say is a must-do during any visit. East of Funchal, you'll find Canico De Baixo. This place is a blend of old and new, with an 18th-century church and town square at its heart, surrounded by modern boutique hotels and clifftop villas. While soaking up the stunning views on this island, known as both the Floating Garden and Hawaii of the Atlantic, it's essential to sample the world-renowned Madeira wine. Madeira wine comes in four main styles, each offering a different level of sweetness. The sweetest of them all is Malvasia, followed by Bual, then Verdelho. The driest is Sercial. There's also a resurgence of Madeira made from a grape called Terrantez, which was nearly wiped out on the island. It's said to have a sweetness level similar to Bual and Verdelho.
