Fever vs Wings ranks among ABC's most-watched WNBA games ever

USA Todaya day ago
Following the Indiana Fever's dominant 102-83 victory over the Dallas Wings at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on Sunday, ESPN revealed Tuesday morning that the matchup ranks among the most-watched WNBA games ever broadcast on ABC.
According to ESPN, the matchup drew an average of 2.1 million viewers, with a peak audience of 2.5 million, representing a 69% increase vs. last year's WNBA on ABC regular-season average.
The staggeringly high viewership number for Sunday's matchup between the Fever and Wings ranks it as the fourth-most-watched WNBA game ever to air on ABC, which has broadcast over 120 regular-season and playoff games.
To nobody's surprise, the historic ABC viewership numbers for the matchup were primarily driven by the long-awaited clash between Indiana guard Caitlin Clark and Dallas guard Paige Bueckers.
As Clark's most recent injury absence included the June 27 meeting between the two clubs, Sunday's matchup was the first time both iconic players had competed against each other on the WNBA stage.
The two faced one another twice in their college basketball careers, with Bueckers' UCONN Huskies defeating Clark's Iowa Hawkeyes in the 2021 Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. Clark and the Hawkeyes would return the favor with a victory in the 2024 Final Four.
While Clark's historic season last year secured her the 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year, Bueckers' impressive 2025 campaign so far has her firmly in the driver's seat to win the award at the end of this season.
The news on Tuesday now only adds to the astounding viewership draw Clark possesses as Indiana now has the most-watched, third-most-watched, and fourth-most-watched WNBA game ever to be broadcast on ABC.

Analyst Reveals What Separates Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes From Other Top QBs

Analyst Reveals What Separates Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes From Other Top QBs originally appeared on Athlon Sports. With the NFL rankings for quarterbacks coming out recently, Kansas City Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes is still No. 1, despite a couple of down seasons. Granted, the Chiefs won a Super Bowl and went to another, but Patrick's stats aren't the usual ones we've seen from him, posting lower passing yards and touchdown totals while the interceptions have been double-digits for the past four years. Some have Josh Allen or Lamar Jackson and even Joe Burrow above Mahomes when it comes to the best quarterback in football, but ESPN's Dan Orlovsky has detailed exactly what makes Patrick better than his rivals. "The gap has never been this ridiculously big gap when it comes to Patrick, Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, and Joe Burrow," Orlovsky said on ESPN's GetUp. "All three of those guys had better seasons last year than Patrick did, yes. But there is the reality that Patrick, not once, not twice, but three or four times, has played his absolute best when it's been needed the most." "Those other three guys haven't necessarily done that. And so, is Patrick the best at the position? He's still the top dog when it comes to you got to go be your very best when it's needed the most. When it comes to the ability to play, those guys have always been kind of nipping at his heels." We can't argue with that. Plus, in 2023, Mahomes, in the playoffs, went into Highmark Stadium in Buffalo and beat Josh Allen, and then in the AFC Championship game, rolled into Baltimore and beat Lamar Jackson. Then we add in that Mahomes beat Allen again in 2024 in the playoffs (4-0 vs. Josh in the postseason), so that givers further credence to Orlovsky's thoughts on Patrick being No. 1. When push comes to shove, he gets it done, while the others haven't. It is really as simple as that, and until the chasing pack do it, or Mahomes falters in the big moments, the NFL's top dog will always reside in Kansas City. Where Nebraska quarterback Dylan Raiola ranks in The Athletic's 2025 quarterback rankings

The Athletic (subscription required) released its 2025 college football quarterback rankings on Wednesday. The list comprises all 136 starters and is categorized across seven tiers. Nebraska quarterback Dylan Raiola ranked 40th on the list. The list was compiled after the Athletic surveyed more than 40 coaches and staff members from across college football. The list relied on the coaches' and staffers' opinions on the quarterbacks they faced, how the QBs in their conference stack up, and who the best in the country is. The rankings and tiers are based on a combination of coaches' perspectives, players' physical abilities and traits, career accomplishments to date, and a projection of what 2025 may hold for them. The quarterbacks are also ranked by conference and by their status: returning starter, transfer, or new starter. For teams that haven't officially named a starter because they're still engaged in a quarterback battle, The Athletic ranked who they project to start based on information gathered to this point. Raiola's rank of 40th also placed him in tier four, which categorizes quarterbacks as either being young, unproven starters with high potential or veterans who have flashed great talent but hit performance or injury speed bumps somewhere along the way. The Athletic emphasized that while Raiola looked every bit of a five-star prospect last September, he hit a wall midway through his true freshman season. The duo also pointed out that Raiola didn't display top-end athleticism last year, leaving some in the sport wondering how high his ceiling is. However, they pointed out that with Dana Holgorsen fully in charge of the offense, the hope is that Raiola will make a jump this season. 'Has a calmness, maturity, and swagger to him which you want out of your QB,' a Big Ten personnel staffer said. 'Think him continuing to get bigger, faster, stronger and leaner in the offseason can take his game to another level.' Raiola started all 13 games for Nebraska in 2024, where he threw for 2,819 yards, the most by a freshman in program history. He also completed more than 67 percent of his passes (275-of-410), the best completion percentage by a freshman in school history. Colts' free agent signing mentioned among best at position in latest rankings

One of the Colts' free agent signings was mentioned among the best at their position group in the latest 2025 rankings by NFL execs and coaches. Indianapolis Colts' cornerback Charvarius Ward was mentioned among the NFL's top cornerbacks in the latest 2025 rankings from ESPN. With insights from NFL executives, coaches, and scouts, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler has been compiling his ranking of the top 10 players at each position group. Along with the top 10 list, Fowler has also highlighted honorable mentions and those who received votes. Ward was in the receiving votes category, with 12 other cornerbacks. Ward signed a three-year, $54 million deal to join the Colts this offseason. He is just one year removed from an All-Pro season in 2023, where Ward was absolutely dominant. During that 2023 season, Ward surrendered a completion rate of just 54% while tallying five interceptions and a whopping 17 pass breakups, which was the most in the NFL. Quarterbacks also had a passer rating of just 63.7 when targeting Ward, according to PFF. Beyond the production, Ward is also a very good fit for Lou Anarumo's defensive scheme. He can defend a variety of different wide receiver skill sets and is comfortable being on an island, something we will see a lot more of under Anarumo. We've even heard Anarumo discuss the idea of Ward following the opponent's top wideout if that's what the game plan calls for. "He's been a really good player," said Anarumo of Ward. "A really consistent corner in our league for a long time. He can matchup on the best receivers, he's got length, he guards bigger guys but he's quick enough to handle short, faster guys, and he's a good tackler. He's a full package, for sure." Also not to be overlooked, but with Ward having played in two Super Bowls, which includes winning one of them, he brings high-level winning experience to the Colts defense, an element there isn't much of with the team having missed the playoffs the last four seasons.
