Nunez leaves Liverpool to join Saudi's Al-Hilal
Liverpool sold striker Darwin Nunez to Saudi side Al-Hilal, both clubs confirmed on Saturday, in a move that could allow the Premier League champions to make a fresh bid for Newcastle's Alexander Isak. Nunez joined the Reds for an initial 75 million euros ($87 million, £65 million) from Benfica three years ago but has failed to live up to that price tag. The Uruguayan scored 40 goals in 143 appearances but slipped down the pecking order at Anfield under both Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot. According to reports in the British media, Al-Hilal will pay an initial 53 million euros for the 26-year-old. "Al-Hilal Club Company is pleased to announce the signing of Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez from Liverpool FC on a three-year contract," Al-Hilal said in a statement. Nunez was likely to play even less this season after Liverpool signed Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz as part of a 300 million euro spending spree that also includes full-backs Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong. However, the club could still break the British transfer record by signing Isak. Liverpool reportedly had a first bid of £110 million rejected, with Newcastle demanding a fee of up to £150 million for the Swedish striker. The sale of Nunez would take Liverpool's income for transfer sales this window to nearly 200 million euros after the departures of Luis Diaz, Jarell Quansah, Caoimhin Kelleher, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Tyler Morton. Nunez is the latest big name to join Al-Hilal, who shocked Manchester City to reach the quarter-finals of the recent Club World Cup. Coached by former Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi, the Saudi club's squad includes Portuguese internationals Ruben Neves and Joao Cancelo, Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly and former Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic. kca/jc

Tesla Stumbles, but Elon Musk Gets a Massive Payday
Key Points Tesla's sales are struggling in key markets overseas. Consumer backlash from Elon Musk's political stance is real. These 10 stocks could mint the next wave of millionaires › Unless you've been purposely hiding from the news -- which would be understandable -- you know that investors in Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) have had plenty to digest. Between allegations Tesla isn't paying its bills and hurting small businesses, to facing consumer backlash from CEO Elon Musk's political tour (and we can't forget the sliding sales and global profits), it's been a full downpour. Let's consider the recent speed bumps, as well as Musk being rewarded with a hefty $29 billion payday. The overseas spiral July figures are seeping in from Europe, and they show that Tesla registrations checked in 41.6% lower compared to the prior year, despite sales of electric vehicles (EVs) surging across the Continent. It's a continuation of the sales spiral the EV maker faced during the first half of 2025. And the problem is that the decline was supposedly due to the new Model Y being in limited supply -- but the issues appear to be deeper than that. The story is similar in China, another crucial market for Tesla. Its sales of China-made EVs dropped 8.4% in July compared to the prior year. That was a reversal from the small gain Tesla posted in June, which at the time reversed an eight-month losing streak. The consumer backlash The consumer displeasure is real, and Musk's political allegiances have pushed some buyers to new and different brands. There's evidence of the effect this is having on Tesla's once-spotless brand image, according to new data from S&P Global Mobility, which tracks sales data across the automotive industry. The new data, shared with Reuters, showed that Tesla's consumer loyalty took a nosedive in July 2024, correlating with Musk's public commitment to an anti-environmental political campaign. According to Reuters, Tesla's loyalty peaked at 73% in June 2024 before bottoming out in March at 49.9%. No matter how you slice it, that's a quick and dramatic decline in consumer sentiment, literally driving buyers to another brand. A massive payday Tesla's board granted Musk 96 million shares, worth roughly $29 billion, in an attempt to keep the billionaire focused on the EV company amid his multiple businesses and ventures. The vote comes after a 2024 Delaware court ruling that voided Musk's 2018 compensation package, which was valued at over $50 billion. The court said the approval process was flawed and unfair to shareholders. According to Automotive News, the special committee that was formed to consider the new pay package said: "While we recognize Elon's business ventures, interests and other potential demands on his time and attention are extensive and wide-ranging ... we are confident that this award will incentivize Elon to remain at Tesla." What it all means Tesla and its investors certainly appear to be at a crossroads. While selling EVs and zero-emission credits keeps the lights on for the young company, it constantly reminds investors that its future may be more in line with artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and robotaxi services. Long-term investors should stay the course but should also prepare for a bumpy few quarters as the company works through its upcoming identity crisis, the slow ramp-up of the robotaxi, and an aging lineup. What convinced Man Utd to spend £74m on Benjamin Sesko transfer
Man Utd have committed a whopping £74 million to sign Benjamin Sesko, who they are hoping will be the team's star striker for the next five years at least. The deal sees them pay an initial transfer fee of £66.26m (€76.5m), plus a potential £7.36m (€8.5m) in performance-related add-ons. That's a huge figure for a forward is just 22 years of age and has played only two seasons in one of Europe's top five leagues. So why were the Red Devils so willing to part with such a large sum of money? What convinced Man Utd to spend £74m on Sesko transfer Man Utd themselves say their data analysis and research helped them conclude that Sesko has 'the required qualities and personality to thrive' at Old Trafford. Indeed, The Athletic report that their scouting dates back seven years, so they had a ton of data and reports to rely on. In their statement announcing his arrival, they point out he scored 39 goals for Leipzig, the most of any player under the age of 23 over the past two seasons. It's a nice stat, but the underlying numbers don't make for great reading. In the Champions League and Bundesliga he scored 33 goals from just 21.7 non-penalty expected goals (npxG), according to FBref. That means he scored 11.3 goals more than 'expected' by the data, a huge overperformance that no one should expect to continue. This follows the trend of their transfer business when it comes to attacking signings this summer. Both Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha were number one and two respectively on the list of biggest npxG overperformers in the Premier League last season. This is generally the opposite of what smart clubs look for when judging potential future performance; Liverpool, for instance, almost always acquire forwards who had underperformed relative to their xG, like Mo Salah for example. They are betting on the possibility of that correcting itself, while Man Utd are simply hoping that their newcomers are awesome finishers who will continue delivering at the same rate. It seems more likely, from this writer's point of view, that Sesko's physical traits were far more important in their decision to sign him than his numbers. The Slovenia international is, as a Proper Football Man might put it, a Big Lad. But he's also quick and willing to run himself into the ground for the team. Read – Ruben Amorim evidently loves this about him, as well as his workrate. 'He is really young, he's good in the air, he's good running the channels, he's good on the ball. So I think he has a great potential,' the manager said. Man Utd director of football Jason Wilcox went even further, commenting that Sesko 'possesses a rare combination of electrifying pace and the ability to physically dominate defenders, making him one of the most exceptional young talents in world football'. Will those characteristics translate into the goals that Man Utd need to make them a relevant force again? Only time will tell.
