Dolphins vs. Lions live updates: Score, highlights from preseason game

USA Today2 days ago
The Miami Dolphins will be back on the field Saturday for a preseason game against the Detroit Lions, although it's unlikely starters from either team will play much.
Dolphins and Lions players already got plenty of reps against each other earlier this week when the two teams met for joint practices on Wednesday and Thursday. While the first of those sessions was a lopsided domination by Detroit, the second joint practice was much more even.
On Saturday, it'll be the backups in the spotlight with an opportunity for them to show they deserve a higher spot on the depth chart. For some, it'll be a chance to show they're worthy of a place on the 53-man roster.

Ethan Robinson makes impressive game-sealing interception
The Dolphins' undrafted rookie doesn't have much of a shot of making the roster, but he showed a remarkable amount of athleticism on his game-ending interception.
Dolphins' lead extended with 22-yard Jason Sanders field goal
Another impressive drive led by Ewers came up just short of a third touchdown for the rookie. On a third down near the goal line, the seventh-round pick rolled to his right and tried to complete a Theo Wease Jr. hat trick, but the ball was batted away.
Quinn Ewers and Theo Wease connect for another one
The Dolphins rookies did it again with Ewers and Gordon leading the team down the field. And just like the last touchdown drive for Miami, Ewers found Wease in the end zone for six.
Jake Bailey isn't giving up his job without a fight
Bailey slightly outplayed Ryan Stonehouse in the preseason opener, but made a statement Saturday. The latter's two punts went 38 and 42 yards with one downed inside the 20. Bailey boomed 50 and 59 yarders, neither of which were returned. The 59-yard punt was downed inside the Lions' 10-yard line.
Lions on top again after chip shot field goal
A Hendon Hooker rushing touchdown was nullified by a holding penalty, forcing the Lions to eventually settle for a 33-yard field goal.
Dolphins tie it up with a rookies-led touchdown drive
An A.J. Henning punt return followed by a healthy helping of Quinn Ewers and Ollie Gordon II got the Dolphins back to even with the Lions early in the second half. Miami punctuated the drive with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Ewers to undrafted rookie Theo Wease Jr.
Jordan Phillips ragdolls Hendon Hooker for a sack
The Dolphins' fifth-round rookie has been a standout in camp and preseason. That continued Saturday with plenty of stout plays against the run and a ferocious sack.
Lions carve up Miami on a 2-minute drill
Detroit took over inside the 20-yard line with just under two minutes left in the half. In the next 80 seconds, the Lions drove 83 yards, capping it with an 11-yard touchdown from Kyle Allen to Isaac TeSlaa over Dolphins cornerback Cornell Armstrong.
Dolphins turn it over on downs in the red zone
There were missed opportunities aplenty for the Dolphins on what was likely their last drive of the first half. Zach Wilson missed Dee Eskridge on a deep ball and later put a ball just out of reach of Tarik Black, who was open in the end zone. On a fourth down, the Lions ended the drive with a sack of Wilson.
Lions tie it up with a touchdown on 4th down
After the Dolphins forced a fourth-and-7 in the red zone, the Lions rolled the dice and it paid off. Kyle Allen found a wide-open Jackson Meeks for an 11-yard touchdown. It appeared as though second-year safety Jordan Colbert was supposed to be in coverage, but got caught up by a pick play that deftly caught Colbert in traffic.
Ethan Bonner exits game grabbing hamstring
After an incompletion late in the first quarter, the third-year cornerback asked coaches to take him out after he reached for his left hamstring. He then went to the blue medical tent on the Dolphins' sideline and exited to the locker room.
Dee Eskridge leads the way on touchdown drive
After fumbling his first touch, Eskridge has settled in and been a weapon for the Dolphins offense. Two plays after weaving through the Lions defense for 27 yards on a screen pass, Eskridge got Miami on the board with an 11-yard touchdown reception.
After his touchdown, Eskridge has three receptions for 53 yards.
Lions rack up four penalties on first eight offensive plays
Detroit has managed to move the ball, but the team's first two drives fizzled quickly due to an inability to avoid penalties.
Zach Wilson got blasted on a third down
The Dolphins' first offensive possession ended with a three-and-out when Wilson was drilled on third down nearly leading to an interception.
Dee Eskridge fumbles on early punt return
Eskridge has made a solid case for a spot on the 53-man roster, which included a highlight reel catch in practice Thursday, but it's never great to put the ball on the ground in preseason.
Did the Lions troll Dolphins on opening kickoff?
Backup Lions linebacker Grant Stuard raised eyebrows and stole headlines earlier in the week when he said the Dolphins don't "practice how we practice." So it doesn't seem like a coincidence that Stuard, who has never returned a regular season kickoff in his career, took the opening kick back 23 yards.

Dolphins starting offensive line announced
Miami's cornerback starters appear set to play
Cornerback may be the most wide open competition on the Dolphins roster and coaches are taking ever opportunity to see how the position stacks up.
Most Dolphins starters aren't dressed
According to the Sun Sentinel, the list of players not suited up Saturday includes Tua Tagovailoa, Tyreek Hill, De'Von Achane, Aaron Brewer, and Patrick Paul.
The Lions are making sure the Dolphins don't forget how joint practice went
The Dolphins are slightly favored vs. the Lions

Ahmed Hassanein out 'for a while with pec injury, could miss entire rookie season

The Detroit Lions rookie class took another unfortunate bite from the injury bug in Saturday's preseason loss to the Miami Dolphins. Sixth-round defensive end Ahmed Hassanein suffered a chest injury during the game. No. 61 collided with a Dolphins player and immediately grabbed at his upper body in obvious pain. Lions head coach Dan Campbell updated Hassanein's status before Monday's practice. "Amhed's going to be down for a while. He's got a pec," Campbell stated. He later added that the team has not yet made a decision on placing Hassanein on I.R., but "it's tbd (to be determined)" if Hassanein will be able to play at all this season. It's a blow to the development of Hassanein, a high-energy power end who is still learning the finer nuances of football after coming to the game later than most. He grew up in Egypt as a CrossFit competitor before moving back to his native California during high school. Hassanein had primarily been working with the third-team defense, with some second-team reps as well. He was expected to make the final roster. Hassanein is in the NFL's International Player Pathway program and doesn't count against Detroit's roster limits. He is the second member of the Lions draft class to suffer a serious injury before the preseason ends. Seventh-round safety Dan Jackson was lost for the season two weeks earlier. Fifth-round OL Miles Frazier remains on the PUP list and has yet to practice.

Darren Waller 'will be ready to rock' in Week 1, says his agent

The Miami Dolphins are nearly the close of training camp and preseason, but tight end Darren Waller still hasn't joined the team on the practice field. According to his agent Drew Rosenhaus, that's nothing to worry about. "With all due respect to the other tight ends on the (Dolphins) roster, Darren will be ready to rock," Rosenhaus told WSVN's Josh Moser. "He'll do his part. I'm sure he'll get enough time in leading up to the season where he'll be able to contribute in the season opener. He's been working incredibly hard. While he hasn't been practicing, he's been running off to the side, he's running routes. He's pretty much full speed. I think he'll be more than ready for the first game." Waller, who turns 33 next month, was acquired by the Dolphins in a July trade with the New York Giants. The veteran tight end is returning from retirement after sitting out the entire 2024 NFL season. Miami placed Waller on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list at the start of training camp. Last week, Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel dismissed the idea of Waller returning to the active roster with a pair of joint practices on the way against the Detroit Lions. 'Joint practices out of retirement – no, it's not the week,' McDaniel said. On Thursday, the Dolphins will hold their final joint practice of August when they host the Jacksonville Jaguars ahead of a Saturday preseason finale. Waller began his career with the Baltimore Ravens, but emerged as one of the NFL's best receiving tight ends during his tenure with the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders. He earned Pro Bowl honors in 2020 after recording 107 receptions, 1,196 yards, and nine touchdowns. In his only season with the Giants, Waller recorded 52 receptions for 552 yards in 12 games.

Indianapolis Colts sign former Miami Dolphins All-Pro CB Xavien Howard

File Photo by Terry Schmitt/UPI | License Photo Aug. 18 (UPI) -- The Indianapolis Colts signed former Miami Dolphins All-Pro cornerback Xavien Howard, agent David Canter announced Monday. Howard last played in 2023. The eight-year veteran agreed to a one-year deal worth up to $5 million with the AFC South franchise. He will add depth to a Colts cornerbacks room that features Charvarius Ward, Kenny Moore II, Jaylon Jones and JuJu Brents, among others. Moore is dealing with a knee injury, while Jones and Brents have hamstring injuries. Howard entered the league as a second-round pick by the Dolphins in the 2016 NFL Draft. He was a four-time Pro Bowl selection through his first eight seasons. He earned a first-team All-Pro selection in 2020. The Dolphins signed Howard to a new five-year contract, which included $50.7 million in new money, in 2022. That pact brought the total value of his deal to $90 million. Howard sustained a Lisfranc injury to his left foot toward the end of the 2023-24 campaign. He was released after the season and sat out in 2024. Pro Football Focus gave Howard the 143rd-best defensive rating and 138th-best coverage grade among cornerbacks in 2016, his rookie campaign. He received the 67th-best defensive rating and 64th-best coverage grade among cornerbacks who were in for at least 50% of the maximum snaps played at the position in his second season. His play steadily improved over the next several seasons. Howard earned the 15th-best defensive grade and rated 18th in coverage in 2018. Howard received the second-best defensive rating and coverage grade in 2020. His performance declined in 2022 and 2023, when he received the 70th-best defensive rating and 71st coverage grade. Howard, who worked with current Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo for two seasons while he was Dolphins defensive backs coach, also drew interest from the Cincinnati Bengals and Dallas Cowboys. The Colts will face the Bengals in their preseason finale at 1 p.m. EDT Saturday in Cincinnati. They will host the Dolphins in their regular season opener Sept. 7 in Indianapolis.
