Football: England forward Rashford joins Barcelona on loan from Man United

England forward Marcus Rashford has joined Barcelona on a season-long loan from Manchester United with an option to buy, the two clubs said on Wednesday.
Media reports said that Barcelona would cover Rashford's wages this season after the player accepted a pay cut, with the option to buy set at around €30 million (NZ$58.45m).
"Very excited. I think it's a club where people's dreams come true. They win big prizes. And what the club stands for really means a lot to me as well. So it feels like I am at home," Rashford told Barcelona's YouTube channel.
Barcelona said Rashford signed his contract earlier in the afternoon.
"Rashford can play anywhere in attack. Right footed, he can take players on and is an excellent finisher, talents he can now show in a Barca shirt," the club said in a statement.
The move came after Manchester-born Rashford, who made 426 senior appearances and scored 138 goals for United in all competitions, fell out of favour with manager Ruben Amorim, who called the 27-year-old's workrate into question.
Rashford, who won two FA Cups, two League Cups and a Europa League title with United, joined Aston Villa on loan in February after Amorim said he would rather put a goalkeeper coach on the bench than a player not giving their all.
The forward, who has scored 17 goals for England in 62 appearances, said he was feeling fitter and better after joining Villa, where he netted two goals in 10 league games, while United had their worst-ever Premier League campaign, finishing 15th in the standings.
"Everyone at Manchester United wishes Marcus good luck for the season," United said in a statement.
LaLiga champions Barcelona are set to play three pre-season friendlies in Japan and South Korea starting on 27 July.

Black Ferns World Cup rookies keen to test themselves on the biggest stage

The pair have been in camp with the Black Ferns in Wellington following last week's World Cup squad naming and with the team due to fly out to England for their title defence on 13 August, things have been getting pretty full on at training, with Joseph sporting a black eye. "I got this the first training of camp last week. So, yeah I think the intensity's definitely gone up since being named in the World Cup squad. Halfback Joseph has been learning a lot about World Cup rugby. "I've had really good conversations with Kelly Brazier . This is obviously her fourth World Cup. She's just kind of explained to us how different it is in terms of the pressure and the stakes and I guess the expectations on us as the Black Ferns. "Most of her advice has been around being present, being really in the moment. I think her missing the last World Cup, she learnt that these things are very rare to be a part of. "That's what I'm going to take into it and just try, on and off the field, to make the most of every moment over there." Olsen-Baker can barely contain her excitement at the prospect of heading to England, but she concedes there will be times it could be difficult. "Definitely being away from my family would be a huge challenge. I'm such a family person," Olsen-Baker said. She made her Black Ferns debut in 2022 but injury meant the loose forward didn't feature at the the 2021 World Cup in New Zealand (played in 2022). "Just can't wait to play some footy. I was literally watching training last week and I'm like, oh my god itchy feet. I can't wait to get back out on the field." Injury also curtailed Joseph's chances of playing at the last World Cup, but watching the Black Ferns win the title reaffirmed her desire to play at the global tournament. "I was actually at home (during the last World Cup final). I had just ruptured my ACL and I had just had surgery so I was at home watching with my mum. "I think it was really inspiring watching that game and seeing how New Zealand got behind the Black Ferns. Watching them win in front of a sold out Eden Park, that was definitely a pivotal moment in me wanting to experience the same thing. I'm just really excited to go to be honest." Former All White Marco Rojas announces retirement

The 33-year-old New Zealand international made 155 A-League appearances over 16 years, with stints at the Phoenix, Melbourne Victory and Brisbane Roar. He also played for clubs in Europe and South America. The All Whites winger returned to Wellington for the 2024-25 season but injuries meant he made just seven appearances before the mutual agreement to terminate his contract three months early. Earlier this month Rojas returned briefly to his former club Victory to take part in pre-season training. "Now I can put the curiosity to bed, and acknowledge that it's time for me to move on. I am ready. I will not be playing anymore week in and week out like the professionals do," Rojas told A-Leagues. "I'm yet to know what type of football I might play down the line, although I really love the idea of keeping fit for the odd charity or community game." Rojas played 45 times for the All Whites after making his debut in 2011. He won the Johnny Warren Medal following the 2012-23 A-League season. Kiwi Wollaston makes podium on Tour de France
Ally Wollaston. Photo: FDJ-Suez New Zealand cyclist Ally Wollaston has grabbed another Grand Tour podium. The 24-year-old finished third on stage three of the women's Tour de France. The FDJ-Suez rider managed to survive a chaotic sprint finish to the 164km stage from La Gacilly to Angers. Sprint specialist Lorena Wiebes of the Netherlands made an explosive push for the finish as a crash in the final 4km temporarily took out several riders including 2023 champion and Wollaston's team-mate Demi Vollering of the Netherlands. Opening stage winner Marianne Vos of the Netherlands lost a photo-finish to Wiebes but reclaimed the yellow jersey from Kim Le Court Pienaar, who led the general classification after Sunday's second stage but dropped to second with a six-second deficit. The stage, mostly on a flat terrain, began without Giro d'Italia winner Elisa Longo Borghini, who withdrew from the race due to a stomach infection. Vollering, who recovered from the crash, remained in contention in the general classification, sitting 19 seconds behind Vos. Another New Zealander, Niamh Fisher-Black, is tenth overall, 25 seconds behind the leader. Wollaston won a silver and bronze medal on the track at last year's Paris Olympics and won world titles in the elimination race and omnium. She finished third on a stage of the Vuelta Femenina earlier this year. The Tour continues on Tuesday with stage four, a 130.7km ride from Saumur to Poitiers through another mostly-flat terrain.
