T'puram: The Royal Navy F-35 fighter jet continues to be stranded at Thiruvananthapuram airport as engineers from its aircraft carrier have failed to repair a hydraulic snag. A team is staying at the airport and is continuing the repairs.
There is a move to shift the jet to the hangar as it may have to be here for a long time until a team from the UK and the US can check it. There are rumours that it was supposed to be moved to the hangar, but the British Navy authorities are not in favour of it.
Sources said that different teams of technicians keep coming every other day to check the plane, but they are not able to fix the snag. "Engineers from the UK may come in the coming days," said an official.
The plane is parked in bay 4. "We have enough bays to handle commercial aircraft. The presence of the fighter jet is not an issue," said an airport official.
This is the first time that the US-made, most sophisticated fighter jet is stranded in a foreign country. It is part of the Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales. The aircraft carrier, which leads the Carrier Strike Group 25 on its way for its deployment in the Indo-Pacific, carried out at-sea exercises along with the Indian Navy last week.

Meanwhile, a news agency report said the aircraft was awaiting a team of engineers from Lockheed Martin, the jet's American manufacturer, to resolve a persisting technical snag.
The F-35 is renowned for its short take-off and vertical landing capabilities, allowing it to operate from aircraft carriers and short runways. Despite its cutting-edge design, the ongoing issue has left British officials perplexed.

US experts begin op to control gas blowout in Sivasagar

Dibrugarh: Three veteran well control specialists from Cudd Well Control, US, begun their intensive site preparations on Saturday to bring under control the massive gas blowout from ONGC's Rudrasagar (RDS147A) rig in Assam's Sivasagar since June 12. The experts, who have flown in from Houston, arrived in Sivasagar on Friday after multiple attempts by ONGC's crisis management team failed to stop the leakage. The deployment of the US team — experts in blowout control since 1977 — signals a critical escalation in efforts to contain the situation, which has already seen evacuation of nearly 350 families, currently housed in relief camps. While ONGC has not yet officially confirmed whether the well will be permanently sealed or not, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said the corporation will "permanently cap" the well. However, ONGC's latest press release on Saturday mentioned only about "containment efforts". "The experts have expressed their agreement with the strategy and execution carried out to date, reaffirming the effectiveness of ONGC's approach to safely managing the well," the organisation said in a statement. Based on a forward plan, jointly developed by the US specialists and the ONGC teams, extensive site preparations are underway to facilitate the next critical phase of containment operations. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Memperdagangkan CFD Emas dengan salah satu spread terendah? "ONGC has made significant headway in its well control operations at RDS 147A, with the flow rate of the gas having reduced substantially, marking a critical step forward in containment efforts," the statement added. The oil major said safety protocols were paramount as operations continued. "Water blanketing continues around the clock as a key safety measure. Additionally, flood-level monitoring of the nearby Dikhow river remains ongoing, ensuring all operations are aligned with environmental and safety protocols," the statement read. The ONGC teams are continuously monitoring the Low Explosive Limit (LEL) level in the air with the help of real-time gas detectors to ensure worker and community safety. While the humanitarian impact of the blowout remains significant, relief camps have been built to accommodate displaced residents, with ONGC confirming that "medical assistance is being provided at the relief camp to support all those in need."

NTR district takes up ‘Clean Air' drive with major initiatives under NCAP

Vijayawada: The NTR district administration has taken up the 'Clean Air' initiative in a big way under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP), by launching a series of integrated measures aimed at reducing air pollution and improving environmental standards in Vijayawada. Authorities of NTR district conducted a high-level meeting with officials from the Pollution Control Board, Vijayawada Municipal Corporation, transport, industries, and other departments, assessed the progress made, and planned further action. Air quality monitoring data revealed that the level of PM 10 fine dust particles in the city stood at 64 µg/m³ during 2024–25. Authorities resolved to bring this number down through focused interventions in traffic, greenery, and pollution control. Among the key initiatives is the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS), being developed at a cost of ₹5 crore. The system is expected to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion at junctions, and cut down vehicle emissions. The administration also directed that illegal parking be curbed and dedicated parking zones be created to ease road pressure. "Smooth vehicle movement through ITMS, curbing illegal parking, and encouraging e-vehicles can bring down urban pollution significantly," collector Dr G Lakshmi said during the meeting. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Brass Krishna Idols For Prosperity & Protection In Life Luxeartisanship Shop Now Undo Efforts are also being intensified to promote electric and solar-powered vehicles, including e-rickshaws, and to develop oxygen parks and vertical gardens across the city. Action is being taken to identify and penalise vehicles emitting high levels of pollutants. Additionally, pollution caused by VTPS ash is to be addressed using advanced technology. On the solid waste management front, construction of proper roads, pavement development, canal bank greening, and mechanical sweeping are being prioritised. The administration is also enforcing ban on single-use plastic, particularly in shopping complexes, farmers' markets, and commercial zones. "All departments must report on plastic control measures and explore alternatives. Awareness campaigns among street vendors are equally important," Dr. Lakshmi added. A stakeholder workshop under NCAP has been scheduled for July 4 to discuss and finalise the next phase of clean air actions.
