Albert Capellas parts ways with PMNFT, Carles Caudrat takes over

Philippine Men's National Football Team head coach Albert Capellas has parted ways with the squad and will be replaced by recently appointed assistant coach Carles Caudrat. The Philippine Football Federation announced the development late Saturday, just less than two weeks before the Philippines' match against Tajikistain in the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers on June 10. "My wonderful journey as head coach of the Philippine National Football Federation has come to an end and I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to all those who have been part of it, especially the players and all the staff involved, the Director of National Teams Freddy Gonzalez, and the President John Gutierrez," Capellas, who was appointed as head coach in September 2024, said in a statement. 'Together, we have enjoyed an inspiring journey and have proven that Filipino football has a promising generation of young players with the potential to bring great pride and success to the country. I am sincerely grateful for the time we have shared and for the support and kindness I've received from the entire Filipino football community. I will always carry these memories with me and wish the Federation and the team continued growth and success in the years to come. With gratitude, Albert Capellas.' According to Gonzalez, Capellas stepped down due to personal reasons. 'Personal reasons have led to Albert's departure. Out of great respect for him, we will not elaborate. We are grateful for his service, and wish him well. I continue to consider him a friend,' Gonzalez said. 'As with all things in life, change happens and one must always be prepared to handle unexpected turns. We move on, and keep pushing forward. Albert left us with a blueprint to follow and we thank him for bringing Carles on board, enabling him to be the interim head coach and provide continuity for what Albert has started. Now is the time to focus on the match with Tajikistan and push to be top of the group and focus on qualifying for the Asian Cup.' With Capellas at the helm, the Philippine men's team reached the semis of the ASEAN Championships last December, which along the way included a historic win against Thailand in five decades. Cuadrat, meanwhile, has worked with the national teams of Saudi Arabia and El Salvador, and top European clubs Barcelona Youth, Galatasaray and Midtjylland. Recently, he steered East Bengal FC to their first trophy in over a decade. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

EJ Obiena wins third straight gold in Asian Athletics Championships

Filipino Olympian and pole vaulter EJ Obiena proved he is still the king of Asian pole vault. Obiena on Saturday ruled the men's pole vault event of the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships in Gumi, South Korea as he cleared 5.77 meters in the jump-off against China's Huang Bokai. This is Obiena's third straight gold in the Asian tourney after ruling it in 2019 in Dubai and 2023 in Bangkok. The jump-off happened as both pole vaulters cleared 5.72 meters in just one attempt, skipped 5.77, then failed in all three attempts of the 5.82 mark. It was Obiena who cleared the 5.77-meter mark in the jump-off, handing Huang the silver medal. Thailand's Patsapong Amsamarng copped the bronze with 5.67 meters. Obiena's compatriot Hokett Delos Santos, meanwhile, placed 13th as he cleared 4.97 meters. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Agusan del Sur to host 2026 Palarong Pambansa

ILOCOS NORTE - With the tournament finding home in the north, the Palarong Pambansa is now heading south next as Agusan del Sur is set to host the 66th edition next year. Agusan del Sur governor Santiago Cane formally accepted the hosting duty on Saturday as Ilocos Norte successfully hosted the 65th edition in various towns and municipalities in the province. "We accept this responsibility with pride and a deep sense of purpose. Our commitment is very clear: to deliver a safe, inclusive, and memorable Palarong Pambansa," Cane said during the closing ceremony on Saturday at the Ilocos Norte Centennial Arena. "Furthermore, this is not just a victory for us in the local government but also a powerful source of inspiration to every young athlete in our province who aspires to achieve excellence through sports." Cane said Agusan del Sur has been ready to host student-athletes, coaches, and other delegates from all over the country next year, sharing they have upgraded the sports facilities and equipment. He added that the province has also strengthened its tourism in bid to promote sports. "For a long time, the province of Agusan del Sur has aspired to host one of the most prestigious sporting events in the country, the Palarong Pambansa," he added. "With this in mind, we are strengthening our sports and youth development services along with the upgrading of our facilities, equipment, and tourist sites to promote sports tourism in the province." Region 13, where Agusan del Sur is a part of, finished eighth in the recent Palarong Pambansa with 21 gold medals alongside 20 silver and 43 bronze as National Capital Region (NCR) topped anew with a 117-gold, 70-silver, and 50-bronze haul.
