Blackhawks snap losing streak with 3-1 win over the Penguins

CBS News07-04-2025
Ilya Mikheyev scored twice, Frank Nazar added a goal and Spencer Knight stopped 28 shots as the Chicago Blackhawks snapped a five-game skid with a 3-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday night.
Rickard Rakell scored on a power play and Alex Nedeljkovic made 28 saves for the Penguins, who have lost five of their last seven games.
After a scoreless first period, Nazar gave Chicago the lead with a short-handed goal at 18:55 of the second. It was Nazar's ninth of the season and came off Teuvo Teravainen's 42nd assist.
Mikheyev stretched the Blackhawks' lead to 2-0, scoring on a wrist shot at 9:40 of the third. Connor Bedard and Sam Rinzel assisted. He added an empty-netter with 56 seconds remaining.
Rakell pulled Pittsburgh within a goal at 14:36 of the third, matching his career high with his 34th goal of the season. Bryan Rust and Ville Koivunen picked up assists.
Penguins: Sidney Crosby wasn't able to duplicate the effort that produced a four-point game on Saturday. Crosby was coming off a three-goal, one- assist game in a win over Dallas. He had his NHL-leading 12-game points streak ended and managed two shots in the loss, playing 19:43.
Blackhawks: Entered the game having lost 12 of their last 13 games. Chicago won for the first time since beating Philadelphia 7-4 on March 23.
A key save by Knight with a minute remaining set Mikheyev's second goal of the game, an empty netter, in motion and spoiled Pittsburgh's comeback bid.
Nazar's short-handed goal was just the fifth allowed by the Penguins this season.
The teams play again on Tuesday at Pittsburgh.

Caleb Williams and Bears starters won't play Sunday

Training camp for the Chicago Bears has been full of ups and downs. Caleb Williams and the Bears' offense have showed many ups lately, but this group would still benefit from some game reps. Preseason provides a lot of benefit for teams that need more time to get their offense clicking, but also it provides a huge risk for injury for teams' starters. Chicago coach Ben Johnson decided to get reps in the joint practice this week rather than throwing the starters into Sunday's game against the Miami Dolphins. Brendan Sugrue with Bears Wire outlined Ben Johnson's comments on his preseason Game 1 plans: "In an exclusive interview with CHGO's Hoge and Jahns show, Johnson said Williams and the starters will not see any game action on Sunday. 'There are going to be a number of guys that aren't playing in this game. I haven't even told the team this yet,' Johnson said in the interview. 'There are going to be a number of guys that aren't playing in the game, so we're going to get great work in the joint practice.' "Johnson is looking to get a lot out of the joint practice with the Dolphins, but he has more plans to ensure the starters get the reps they need. 'We have a number of things scheduled around the game for those guys that aren't playing, whether it's the day before or the day after,' he said. 'We're actually going to end up getting more reps for them than they would have had we played them Week 1 of this game.' Playing starters in preseason games is an age-old debate that pops up every single year. It seems coaches are focusing more and more on practices and less on the games, with many holding their starters out in Week 1. On Thursday night, the Cincinnati Bengals were the lone exception, as they played their starters to try and circumvent their slow starts to the season." Caleb Williams will not be playing in Sunday's game against the Dolphins, but Ben Johnson is determined to make sure Caleb and the Bears get their reps elsewhere. If the Bears' starting offense played on Sunday, its time on the field would be very limited, so planning more practices for them to get reps and sitting them Sunday makes a lot of sense. Ben Johnson has been a breath of fresh of air in every facet as the Bears' new head coach. If Ben Johnson has made a decision it has been a well thought out one; he has communicated that decision well to media and fans. Chicagoans would have wanted to see Caleb get snaps on Sunday, but as long as Ben Johnson has this offense and Caleb Williams ready for Week 1, there will be no uproar. Caleb Williams and Ben Johnson begin to show what's possible with Bears

The Caleb Williams and Ben Johnson era couldn't have gotten off to a better start. Yes, it was only preseason. Still, Caleb Williams had one of the better drives we have seen from him as an NFL quarterback. Caleb did a lot of things he struggled with in his rookie season and looked like a completely different player. It is always hard to predict how things will go after seeing preseason action, especially given that the Buffalo Bills were not playing their starters against the Chicago Bears, but seeing a glimpse of how efficient and dangerous this Bears offense can be has to get Chicago fans excited. Brendan Sugrue with Bears Wire gave his thoughts on the early success of Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams: "Williams and the starting offense opened things up with an impressive touchdown drive where he went 5-of-6 for 97 yards. He was accurate and poised, delivering the ball quickly to tight ends Colston Loveland and Cole Kmet while firing a dart to Olamide Zaccheaus for the touchdown. His lone miss was on a play where he was pressured to his right and had to make an off-balance throw to Zaccheaus that came a play before they connected for a touchdown. "All in all, Williams finished the day going 6-of-10 for 107 yards and a touchdown with a passer rating of 130.0. Williams is starting with his left foot forward, a change from last year. His base looks improved from his rookie season as well, something that wasn't always consistent. The best news, however, may be that Williams didn't take a single sack in either series after he took 68 in 2024. There is a long way to go, but the unofficial start to the Williams and Johnson partnership could not have gone much better than it did on Sunday night." Caleb Williams had the fourth highest PFF grade among all quarterbacks in Week 2 of the NFL preseason. He ultimately was one of the biggest winners from this week. All of the offseason banter that painted Caleb Williams in a negative light seems to be simmering down after Sunday night's performance. Given how creative and efficient Ben Johnson's offense is, a consistently excellent Caleb Williams will make the Bears very dangerous in the NFC. We will see Caleb Williams have an MVP-level season. In that sole drive Caleb Williams not only looked like Jared Goff, but he also looked a lot like number 13 for the USC Trojans a couple seasons ago. Getting Caleb Williams to make plays on time and be the player who was drafted No. 1 will take this Bears team to new heights this season.
