US citizen detained by ICE while 9 months pregnant, ends up in hospital: ‘I can't fight back'
Cary Lopez Alvarado, 28, was detained by immigration authorities in California over the weekend despite being a US citizen, according to an NBC Los Angeles report.
She experienced sharp pains in the stomach and had to be hospitalized after her release on Sunday.
The wrongful detention of a nine-months-pregnant US citizen by ICE highlights serious concerns about racial profiling, due process violations and the agency's unchecked authority.
It comes at a time when Los Angeles has been rocked by violent anti-ICE protests following a series of raids carried out by the immigration agency.
Cary Lopez was taken into custody in Hawthorne, California by ICE agents. Lopez is just one week away from giving birth. She was released on Sunday and is now speaking out against her detention.
On Sunday in Hawthorne, masked men dressed in Border Patrol uniforms arrived in marked US Customs and Border Protection vehicles and followed a white pickup truck carrying two undocumented workers, one of whom was Cary López Alvarado's partner, into a private parking area.
Lopez and her cousin, Alberto Sandoval – both US citizens – opened the gate to allow the truck to enter. Lopez Alvarado later said that she and her cousin believed the agents would need a warrant to legally enter their workplace.
'They had us all surrounded,' she said.
Lopez Alvarado filmed her interaction with the ICE agents. In one video, she can be heard telling them 'I'm gonna need you guys to leave. This is private property.'
In another video, one of the agents says, "Excuse me ma'am. You are interfering with my arrest. I'm doing my job... Can you please move away?"
Cary Lopez Alvarado was arrested along with her husband, his coworker and her cousin. Her husband and his coworker are both undocumented. The 28-year-old says that federal agents accused her of obstructing the arrest of her undocumented husband.
'I had lost my balance because he was kind of shoving me away from the door,' a tearful Lopez told NBC from her hospital bed on Monday. 'That's when I kind of leaned forward, trying to protect the stomach."
'I wasn't resisting or anything,' she said. 'I can't fight back. I'm pregnant.'

The Veep Election: BJP's Tamil Nadu Pick, INDIA Bloc's Response, The Numbers
New Delhi: The 'battle' to replace Jagdeep Dhankhar as Vice President of India won't be much of a contest given the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance has the votes (with nearly three dozen to spare) to ensure its nominee - Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan - carries the day. Between the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, the BJP has 422 MPs, including those from NDA members, and can count on support from non-aligned partners, including ex-Andhra Chief Minister Jagan Reddy's YSR Congress Party. Mr Radhakrisnan and the BJP need only 394 votes to win. The opposition, i.e., the Congress-led INDIA bloc, will still name a candidate, of course, with DMK Rajya Sabha MP Tiruchi Siva on the shortlist, as is ex-ISRO scientist Mylswami Annadurai. But if there is little chance an opposition candidate can win, then why bother with an election? The opposition has said it will field a candidate to underscore democratic principles and unity within its ranks ahead of crucial elections in Bihar later this year and in Tamil Nadu, Bengal, and Assam in 2026. READ | India Bloc Meet On To Discuss Joint Vice President Candidate Also, the INDIA bloc knows it needs to respond to the BJP selecting a Tamil Nadu politician as a Vice President candidate. Sources told NDTV picking Mr Radhakrishnan - a veteran BJP leader from Tamil Nadu - was meant to allow the party to corner the state's ruling DMK into either supporting its pick (and breaking rank with the Congress and its INDIA bloc allies) or risk being bashed as 'anti-Tamil'. Publicly the DMK has pooh-pooed any notion that selecting a Vice President from its state makes the BJP pro-Tamil. Privately, sources said, the party has urged INDIA allies to counter Mr Radhakrishnan with a Tamil face of its own. The Congress has reportedly agreed to this tactic. To that end, earlier today there were rumours that Tiruchi Siva, a five-time parliamentarian, would be selected to stand against Mr Radhakrishnan. But a sticking point soon emerged. READ | BJP Veep Pick Will Cause Cracks In Opposition Bloc? It Depends On... Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool - which refused to back the Congress' Margaret Alva in the 2022 Veep election, because it wanted a non-political face - has made a similar demand. Three years ago, refusing to give in, the Trinamool abstained, and Mr Dhankhar romped to an outsized win. This time around, aware it needs all the votes it can get, the INDIA bloc is likely to be more open to the Trinamool's demands, which may be why Mr Annadurai, a scientist, is on the shortlist. For the BJP, nominating Mr Radhakrishnan works on multiple levels. It sets up possible rifts between the DMK and the rest of the INDIA bloc if a Tamil face is not chosen, or between the Trinamool and the rest of the bloc if a non-political face is chosen. Either way the BJP has the numbers to make Mr Radhakrishnan - whom Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised as someone who "distinguished himself with his dedication, humility and intellect" - the third Vice President (and second with that surname) from Tamil Nadu.

BJP slams denial of Sikh sarpanch's entry at Red Fort over ‘kirpan'
New Delhi: BJP national spokesperson R.P. Singh on Monday called on Joint Commissioner of Police (Central Range) Madhur Verma here and submitted a formal representation against Assistant Commissioner of Police Shashi Kant Gaur for stopping an 'amritdhari' Sikh sarpanch from a village of Punjab at the Red Fort on Independence Day, despite being specially invited to the event. Singh said the incident amounted to an insult to the Sikh community. Gurdhyan Singh of Kalsana village in Nabha was invited to attend the Independence Day function. In his representation, Singh highlighted that the sarpanch (village head) was denied entry solely because he was carrying the 'kirpan', a sacred article of Sikh faith and constitutionally protected under Article 25. He said this was a violation of constitutional rights, as upheld by the Supreme Court, and amounted to both an insult to the Sikh community and an act of dereliction of duty, bringing disrepute to Delhi Police. During the meeting, Joint Commissioner of Police Verma placed a video call with the sarpanch, expressed regret over the incident, and confirmed that an inquiry will be conducted into this episode against the officer concerned. He also invited the sarpanch for a personal meeting, reaffirming goodwill and respect. R.P. Singh welcomed this gesture of responsibility by the Delhi Police leadership while stressing that strict instructions must be issued to prevent recurrence and to fully safeguard the constitutional and religious rights of the Sikh community. Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Harjinder Singh Dhami on Sunday condemned the incident, saying the refusal to allow Gurdhyan Singh entry because of his 'kirpan' was a reflection of an 'anti-Sikh mentality'. He emphasised that preventing a Sikh from participating in a national event due to their religious symbol is an affront to the Sikh community and an act of treating them as outsiders in their own country. The SGPC president clarified that the 'five kakars', which include the kirpan, are an integral part of Sikh identity and cannot be abandoned. He called for strict action against the officials responsible for this incident to ensure it doesn't happen again in the future.

CRPF erects memorial for troops killed in Bastar anti-Naxal operations
Raipur, The Central Reserve Police Force has erected a memorial to honour its jawans and officers who were killed in anti-Naxal operations in the Bastar region of Chhattisgarh over the last 20 years. CRPF erects memorial for troops killed in Bastar anti-Naxal operations The 'Shaheed Smarak' in Kondagaon has been constructed by the 188th battalion of the paramilitary force based in the district and it was inaugurated on Independence Day, officials said on Monday. "Bastar has seen one of the most violent operations, encounters and ambushes between the security forces and the Maoists for over 20 years now. It remains the epicentre of the Maoist combat. "With the Union government declaring that the Left Wing Extremism will end by March, 2026, it is appropriate to build a memorial for the slain personnel of CRPF which remains the lead security force for these operations," a senior CRPF officer said. The memorial honours the 460 brave CRPF personnel, including 20 officers, who were killed in the line of duty in the Bastar region between 2003 and August 15, 2025, the officer said. The Bastar region also remains the last bastion of this combat zone, he said. There are numerous other memorials in the about 3.25 lakh-strong force but this one is in the exclusive memory of the personnel killed in Bastar, he added. The Bastar region falls in the southern part of Chhattisgarh and shares its borders with states like Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. The region comprises seven districts including Bastar, Kanker, Kondagaon, Narayanpur, Sukma, Bijapur and Dantewada. The memorial is located outside the camp of the CRPF's 188th battalion on NH-30 in Kondagaon and it was inaugurated by battalion Commanding Officer Bhavesh Chaudhary. "The 'Shaheed Smarak' will give inspiration to coming generations and highlight the deeds and sacrifice of the CRPF who fought Naxalism in Chhattisgarh," Chaudhary said.
