US citizen detained by ICE while 9 months pregnant, ends up in hospital: ‘I can't fight back'
A nine-months-pregnant US citizen was detained by ICE in California, sparking further outrage about the federal immigration agency's 'overreach' amid violent protests.
Cary Lopez Alvarado, 28, was detained by immigration authorities in California over the weekend despite being a US citizen, according to an NBC Los Angeles report.
She experienced sharp pains in the stomach and had to be hospitalized after her release on Sunday.
The wrongful detention of a nine-months-pregnant US citizen by ICE highlights serious concerns about racial profiling, due process violations and the agency's unchecked authority.
It comes at a time when Los Angeles has been rocked by violent anti-ICE protests following a series of raids carried out by the immigration agency.
Cary Lopez was taken into custody in Hawthorne, California by ICE agents. Lopez is just one week away from giving birth. She was released on Sunday and is now speaking out against her detention.
On Sunday in Hawthorne, masked men dressed in Border Patrol uniforms arrived in marked US Customs and Border Protection vehicles and followed a white pickup truck carrying two undocumented workers, one of whom was Cary López Alvarado's partner, into a private parking area.
Lopez and her cousin, Alberto Sandoval – both US citizens – opened the gate to allow the truck to enter. Lopez Alvarado later said that she and her cousin believed the agents would need a warrant to legally enter their workplace.
'They had us all surrounded,' she said.
Lopez Alvarado filmed her interaction with the ICE agents. In one video, she can be heard telling them 'I'm gonna need you guys to leave. This is private property.'
In another video, one of the agents says, "Excuse me ma'am. You are interfering with my arrest. I'm doing my job... Can you please move away?"
Cary Lopez Alvarado was arrested along with her husband, his coworker and her cousin. Her husband and his coworker are both undocumented. The 28-year-old says that federal agents accused her of obstructing the arrest of her undocumented husband.
'I had lost my balance because he was kind of shoving me away from the door,' a tearful Lopez told NBC from her hospital bed on Monday. 'That's when I kind of leaned forward, trying to protect the stomach."
'I wasn't resisting or anything,' she said. 'I can't fight back. I'm pregnant.'

CBI, Madurai, registers corruption case against its own staff
The Central Bureau of Investigation, Madurai, has booked one of its lower division clerk, R. Dinesh Kumar, under the provisions of Prevention of Corruption Act-1988. Based on a news report and social media posts, the Anti-Corruption Bureau of CBI, Madurai, conducted a preliminary enquiry which revealed that Dinesh Kumar had allegedly demanded a bribe money of ₹7 lakh from one K. Ramachandran, for removing his name from the chargesheet in a 2021-case filed by ACB, CBI. Ramachandran had secretly recorded the bribe demanding conversation with Dinesh Kumar in June and December 2023 and had circulated the video clippings in the social media. The probe revealed that Dinesh Kumar had approached Ramachandran when he had come to the CBI office to sign the register as part of complying with bail conditions. He took Ramachandran to a shop and used a man to translate his conversation and demanded ₹2 lakh in advance to remove his name from the chargesheet. After getting consent from authorities concerned, the case was registered on May 30.

Two wanted Maoists killed in Sukma encounter; weapons, explosives seized
Sukma: In a major breakthrough in the ongoing anti-Maoist operations in Chhattisgarh, security forces recovered the bodies of two senior Maoists following an intense encounter in the forested terrain of Dunampara Pusgunna within Kukanar police station in the Sukma district, officials said on Thursday. The deceased have been identified as Muchaki Baman, a commander of the Katekalyan Area Committee carrying a bounty of Rs 5 lakh, and senior Maoist cadre Anita Avalam, both considered key operatives in the banned Communist Party of India-Maoist outfit. Baman was a resident of Chikpal under Katekalyan police limits in Dantewada district, while Avalam hailed from the Bijapur region, the officials said. The joint team, comprising personnel of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and local police, launched the operation based on intelligence inputs indicating Maoist presence in the hilly jungles linked to the Katekalyan Area Committee. According to the Superintendent of Police Kiran Chavan, the exchange of fire began at around 2 p.m. and lasted for several hours, officials added. In addition to the two bodies, security forces recovered an INSAS rifle, a Bharmar firearm, and a significant cache of explosives as well as Maoist materials from the site. The seized items include four gelatin sticks, 10 detonators, 17 rounds of INSAS ammunition, five cartridges of 12-bore ammunition, a soap bomb, a tiffin bomb, wire coils, safety fuses, and other incriminating materials. Inspector General of Police (Bastar Range), Sundarraj P, said that the latest operation is part of a sustained campaign against Maoist extremism in the region. He noted that between January 2024 and June 2025, security forces under the Bastar division have recovered the bodies of 411 Maoists through coordinated action. He said that security forces such as the DRG, Special Task Force, Commando Battalion for Resolute Action, Central Reserve Police Force, Border Security Force, Indo-Tibetan Border Police, Central Armed Police Forces, and the Bastar Fighters are working with determination under the banner of "Sankalp: Naxal Mukt Bastar Mission". IGP Sundarraj highlighted that the Maoist movement, once emblematic of fear and disruption in Bastar, has reached a stage of fading into oblivion. He added that the region is now witnessing the early promise of peace and development, with operations continuing to dismantle the insurgency's remaining strongholds.
