Parents of R.G. Kar victim to lead march to West Bengal Secretariat to mark one year of the crime
'Nabanna Abijaan marks one year since we lost our daughter. However, we are unsure of whether we will be able to reach Nabanna, considering how the police are barricading roads throughout Kolkata and Howrah ahead of the rally. We can take out a peaceful protest if we can reach the venue,' the victim's father told The Hindu on Friday.
He added that they have received positive response from people across the socio-economic and political spectrum. He said the family sent written invitations to several political parties except Trinamool, and received 'affirmative responses from even 'Trinamool-associated' people, especially women.'
'People from all walks of life and all political backgrounds are welcome to join the march without flags. We are expecting a heavy footfall,' he said.
The victim's family is also likely to join the night-long protest gatherings and memorials being organised at Shyambazar Crossing and RGKMCH to mark one year of the crime, on Friday night. The police on Friday said they will enforce prohibitory orders, which is already in place around the State Secretariat.
Prohibitory orders
'Howrah police has issued prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. Therefore, in the area surrounding Nabanna, any protest rallies, gatherings, meetings, or marches are prohibited and illegal, as made clear by the Calcutta High Court order,' said Additional Director General of Police, South Bengal, Supratim Sarkar.
On Thursday, a Division Bench of the Calcutta High Court, while hearing a petition seeking prohibition of Nabanna Abhijaan, held that the right to protest is fundamental. However, the court order on August 7 also noted that 'it will be open for the government to implement the said prohibitory order in accordance with the law and inform the organisers about adequate alternative place for protest.'
Referring to the court's directions, Mr. Sarkar said the police have marked Howrah's Santragachi Bus Stand and Kolkata's Rani Rashmoni Avenue as alternative venues for the protest rally.
'The protest may be carried out at these venues in a lawful, democratic, and peaceful way, without damaging public property or harming police and government officials. This is our request to the organisers. There is no doubt that police will take action if protesters break the law in any way,' Mr. Sarkar said.

‘Violence against police during Nabanna Abhijan': BJP MLA Ashok Dinda gets anticipatory bail, state seeks nod to FIR against Adhikari
The Calcutta High Court on Thursday granted anticipatory bail to former cricketer and BJP MLA Ashok Dinda. Multiple FIRs had been filed by the Kolkata Police against Dinda and other party members in the backdrop of the alleged violence on August 9 during the Nabanna Abhijan, a rally held to observe the first death anniversary of a junior doctor who was raped and murdered at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. The petitions were heard by the single bench of Justice Jay Sengupta. Senior counsel Billwadal Bhattacharya, appearing for Ashok Dinda, submitted, 'The allegation is that the petitioner was surrounded by BJP members and giving a provocative speech.' Senior counsel Kalyan Banerjee, appearing for the State, submitted, 'Every day they say they will kill the police, that is unacceptable.' Hearing both sides, the judge ordered, 'It is alleged that the petitioner gave a provocative speech on the date of incident which, according to the FIR, was derogatory, provocative and a threat to law and order machinery. No offence is made out, a custodial interrogation is not required. Considering the nature of the allegation, anticipatory bail is given. The petitioner is to cooperate with the investigation, meet the IO as and when required, and not to threaten the witnesses.' Meanwhile, BJP leader Kali Khatik has been granted interim relief by the Calcutta High Court till August 22. The court observed, 'The allegation is that he (Khatik) disobeyed public servants, (he) does not require custodial interrogation. Let the petitioner comply with the notice on Monday at the said police station. The matter is listed for August 21; the petitioner shall not be arrested till August 22.' On the matter regarding the quashing of the FIRs filed by former BJP MP Arjun Singh and BJP leader Shankudeb Panda, the court stated that this will be heard on August 21. The state also sought permission from the Calcutta High Court to file an FIR against Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari in the Nabanna Abhijan case on Thursday. The state's counsel alleged that Adhikari had violated the law and order situation on August 9. The matter was referred to Justice Jay Sengupta's bench for a fresh application, but Adhikari's counsel stated that Justice Jay Sengupta's court does not have the jurisdiction to hear this case. The matter is to be heard on Monday. In 2022, a bench of Justice Rajasekhar Mantha of the Calcutta High Court had granted protection to Adhikari. A stay was ordered on 26 FIRs filed by the state police. It also directed that permission from the court would be required to file an FIR against Adhikari. On Wednesday, Dinda and Khatik had moved the Calcutta High Court seeking anticipatory bail, while Singh and Panda did so for the quashing of the cases against them. On Tuesday, the Kolkata Police had summoned Dinda, asking him to appear at the New Market police station on August 18 at 11 am. According to Kolkata Police, seven cases were lodged – five by Kolkata Police and two by Howrah Police – in connection with the violence during the Nabanna Abhijan. Four FIRs have been registered at the New Market Police Station and one at the Hare Street Police Station under the jurisdiction of Kolkata Police. The FIRs were lodged for allegedly violating High Court orders by not going to R R Avenue and taking a procession towards Park Street, for allegedly creating a ruckus at the 'Rakhi' stall of another political party, allegedly assaulting a police constable and causing head injuries, allegedly vandalizing the office of the hawkers' union, and allegedly damaging the camera of a mediaperson and 'confining' him. Meanwhile, a second arrest was made by the New Market Police late on Wednesday night for allegedly assaulting the police. The accused has been identified as BJP worker Mahindrachandra Saha, who hails from Naihati.

HC asks Bengal migrant to appear after he returns from Bangladesh
A day after 19-year-old Bengali migrant Amir Shiekh, who was detained by the Rajasthan Police in June and later pushed into Bangladesh, returned to India on Tuesday, the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday told his family to 'bring back the son first' before it will hear the matter. Amir's father Jiyem Shiekh had moved the Calcutta High Court last week seeking judicial intervention to bring his son back. While the state government and the Centre submitted their respective reports, the High Court upon hearing that Amir was brought back, observed, 'Bring back your son first, we will hear the matter.' Amir's counsel, on Wednesday, told the Division Bench of Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty and Justice Reetobrata Kumar Mitra that a copy of Amir Sheikh's birth certificate was enclosed with the petition, maintaining that he is a citizen of India and was a resident of Kaliachak in Malda district. 'The grandparents of Amir Shiekh has Indian passport, he has school certificates and all documents. They have not seen anything but they had just pushed him into Bangladesh. Prior to that he was tortured in Rajasthan. Now we are being told that the Border Security Force (BSF) have brought him back.' Deputy Solicitor General (DSG) Rajdeep Majumder, appearing for the MEA and the BSF told the court that Amir had attempted to cross over to Indian territory from Bangladesh on August 12. As he could not produce appropriate documents as regards his identity, he was apprehended and handed over to the officer-in-charge, police station-Basirhat, by the BSF. But no formal case has yet been registered against Amir, he added. He submitted that if the petitioner approaches the police authorities, Amir would be handed over to the petitioner subject to production of all necessary records and upon execution of undertaking, if any. TMC MP Samirul Islam posted on X, 'This evening, Amir Sheikh was handed over to his family from the Basirhat police station. Nearly a month after being unlawfully pushed back to Bangladesh by the BSF, Amir is happy to be back on Indian soil — and his family is equally happy to have him home.' While he questioned the authorities' claims regarding Amir Sheikh's deportation, he posted, 'Amir Sheikh was deported to Bangladesh by the Rajasthan Police with the help of the BSF… we stood by his family.. helped Amir's father filed a Habeas Corpus petition in the Calcutta High Court. Under this pressure, the BSF has brought Amir back to West Bengal. The BSF has already handed him over to the Basirhat Police. Today, the court has asked the police to hand over Amir to his father. Yet strangely, they are now claiming that Amir was never deported! Then what happened? How did he end up in Bangladesh?' 'Don't worry—they have another explanation. They claim Amir 'inadvertently' went to Bangladesh on his own!…The same BJP leaders who scream that hordes of infiltrators are flooding India from Bangladesh now want us to believe that Amir willingly crossed… into that very country through illegal routes! Do they have no sense of shame? Or do they simply think the people of Bengal are fools? If it's the latter, let me tell you, anti-Bengal forces — Bengal's people will give you a fitting lesson. How much lower will you stoop?' he said.

TMC, BJP war of words over Abhishek's ‘dissolve Lok Sabha' remark
1 2 Kolkata: A day after Trinamool national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee dared the Union govt to dissolve the Lok Sabha, conduct a special intensive revision (SIR) and then hold polls, BJP on Wednesday alleged that more than 2.7 lakh "doubtful voters" were registered in the Diamond Harbour parliamentary consituency, from which Banerjee is MP. Trinamool hit back asking why BJP did not dispute the results after the 2024 Lok Sabha polls or seek a repoll. Banerjee took to X on Wednesday to reiterate his statement about dissolving the Lok Sabha: "The EC has stated that the voter lists across various states, on the basis of which the general elections were held barely a year ago in 2024, are faulty and riddled with irregularities." "If that is indeed the case, and if the govt agrees with the EC's assessment, then the first step towards conducting a genuine SIR and standing on moral high ground is the immediate dissolution of the Lok Sabha. If one truly supports the idea of SIR, then as per the EC's own statement, the people of the country have been betrayed. Also, if the new CEC is truly as competent as claimed, then the SIR should be implemented across the country, not selectively in poll-bound states," Banerjee wrote. In Diamond Harbour, there are 17, in Bishnupur 35, in Maheshtala 92, in Baghaj 89, and in 32 booths where this increase has occurred. Where is Abhishek Banerjee? He should see that in Diamond Harbour, the govt is his, the BLOs are his, the BLAs are his — so is this why he is winning elections? Is this not a game of fake voting?" Thakur told reporters. He alleged, "Abhishek Banerjee should visit Diamond Harbour and find out whether Khurshid Alam's father is the same or keeps changing, and how this alteration happens repeatedly in the voter list." Trinamool refuted these allegations immediately. Party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said, "Elections in Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha in the 2024 polls were conducted by the EC. The polls were conducted under CAPF cover. The EC was involved in every pre and post-poll process. If there were errors, why did the BJP not complain about it then? Why did they not seek a repoll? The point is the BJP is unable to accept the 7.5 lakh vote loss handed over to them by Abhishek Banerjee. " "If we start nit-picking the voter list, then many BJP leaders may have to start defending how they won. The point is simple. If faulty voter lists led to the 2024 polls, let the union govt resign and hold fresh elections with a proper voter list. They (BJP) are only weakening their argument in defending the EC," Ghosh added. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
