Controversial US envoy pick faces united backlash
PKR Youth International Relations Bureau's Arief Izuadin said Adams' appointment is viewed with deep concern as his background is closely associated with extremist ideologies and divisive rhetoric, which contrast starkly with the values upheld by Malaysia's government and people.
'Such a rejection should not be misconstrued as hostility but rather seen as a necessary measure to safeguard the integrity of bilateral relations and ensure that diplomatic envoys can contribute constructively, in a manner aligned with the shared aspirations of both nations,' he said in a statement yesterday.
He added that PKR Youth intends to submit a formal memorandum of protest to the United States Embassy urging the appointment of a more moderate, respected and globally-minded individual, who will embody the spirit of mutual respect and cooperation that has long underpinned US-Malaysia relations.
Similarly, Selangor PAS Youth Chief Mohamed Sukri Omar said in a separate statement that the government, through Wisma Putra, should take a firm and clear stance against Adams' appointment to protect the sensitivities of Malaysians.
He added that the government should uphold the dignity of a nation that consistently advocates for humanitarian issues, especially regarding Palestine.
'Nick Adams is not just a controversial figure. He openly spreads hatred towards Islam and supports the Zionist colonial regime without consideration.
'He once pressured a restaurant in the United States to fire a waitress simply for wearing a 'Free Palestine' pin. This is an inhumane act that demonstrates extreme and hateful attitudes towards the oppressed Palestinian people's struggle,' he said in a statement yesterday.
He emphasised that Malaysia does not need a diplomatic representative who brings extremist and pro-Zionist ideologies, as it is a majority-Muslim country that upholds the principles of justice and solidarity with oppressed people.
'This appointment is an insult to the sensitivities of Malaysians. If the government remains silent or accepts this appointment, it will be seen as betraying the people's firm stance in supporting the Palestinian cause,' he said.
Mohamed Sukri said Malaysia has the absolute right under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations to reject any ambassadorial candidate deemed unsuitable or harmful to domestic harmony.
He added that firm action is needed to defend the nation's image and stance and to reject any efforts to spread extremist pro-Zionist ideologies in the country.
On Sunday, Amanah Youth international bureau chairman Mus'ab Muzahar said Adams' appointment is an insult to the country's dignity and foreign policy.
'Nick Adams is not a diplomat or a statesman. He is merely a far-right propagandist, a staunch Trump supporter and a vocal supporter of the Zionist Israeli regime.
'His rhetoric on social media is full of hatred, racism and Islamophobic sentiments, clearly deviating from the spirit of mature bilateral relations,' he said in a Facebook post.

Winthai assured the Malaysian Chief of Defence Force that Thailand is strictly adhering to the ceasefire agreement and is ready to support the deployment of observer teams moving forward. WHO can blame man-on-the-street Malaysians who are struggling to cope with escalating cost of living following an expansion to the Sales and Service Tax (SST) scope for being infuriated by news that the Madani government has ditched plan for luxury goods tax tailored for the ultra-rich? This came about after the Finance Ministry confirmed via a written parliamentary reply on Tuesday (July 29) that the government has decided not to proceed with imposition of the high-value goods tax (HVGT) which is fixed at 10%. The given rationale is that elements of the HVGT – which implementation has been delayed since its May 1, 2024 target date – have been incorporated into the revamped sales tax regime where luxury and discretionary items are now taxed at rates of 5% or 10%. To ordinary Malaysians, complexities of the taxation system is perhaps beyond their comprehension. What is obvious though is that such hot potato notion that commoners remain squeezed while the ultra-rich are spared would be rapidly politicised by detractors. Bersatu information chief Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz lambasted the fact that while the HVGT has been scrapped in view of its overlap with SST, the Low Value Goods Tax (LVGT) which came into effect on Jan 1, 2024 is still being imposed side-by-side the SST. 'Regardless, the abolition of HVGT doesn't solve the problem of rising SST rate and SST scope expansion which has resulted in 97% of goods and services that were previously tax-exempted are now taxed by the Madani government,' he reacted on his Facebook page. 'What the people want postponed or abolished are increases in the SST rate and its scope expansion as well as rises in electricity tariff and petrol prices of oil, notably RON95 and diesel, which have resulted in spiralling cost of business operations and living expenses.' US Ends Tariff Exemption For Low-Value Packages Amid Trade Crackdown
US Port of Long Beach The United States will scrap a long-standing 'de minimis' exemption that allowed low-value shipments to enter the country without tariffs, the White House announced on Wednesday. Under an executive order signed by President Donald Trump, packages worth US$800 or less sent outside the international postal system will be subject to 'all applicable duties' starting August 29. The exemption, which fuelled a boom in cross-border e-commerce, previously enabled retailers and consumers to bypass customs duties on small shipments. 'Trump is acting more quickly to suspend the de minimis exemption than the OBBBA requires, to deal with national emergencies and save American lives and businesses now,' the White House said, referring to the recently signed One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The legislation will fully repeal the exemption worldwide in July 2027, but Trump's move accelerates the timeline. Goods sent through postal networks will face either an ad valorem duty equal to the originating country's tariff rate or a temporary fixed tariff of US$80 to US$200 for six months. The exemption's removal follows Trump's earlier actions targeting packages from China and Hong Kong. Since May, shipments from both markets have faced tariffs as high as 145%, later reduced to around 30% after a trade truce in mid-May. Low-value e-commerce, particularly from Asia, has become a major driver of air freight, accounting for 55% of China-to-US air shipments in 2024 compared to just 5% in 2018. Platforms like Shein and PDD Holdings' Temu have benefited from the previous duty-free regime. Annual de minimis shipments surged from 134 million in 2015 to over 1.36 billion by 2024, with US Customs processing more than 4 million packages daily. Air cargo volumes from Asia have already dropped 10.7% since the US ended tax-free treatment for low-value goods from China in May.
