Duke basketball brings back alum after HBCU stint

Miami Herald30-05-2025
Duke basketball head coach Jon Scheyer is bringing a familiar face back to Durham: former Blue Devil Tyler Thornton will join the coaching staff as an assistant. Thornton, who played at Duke from 2010 to 2014, returns after a successful coaching stint at Howard University, an HBCU where he served under fellow Duke alum Kenneth Blakeney.
Thornton joined Howard's men's basketball program in 2019 and played a pivotal role in the Bison's resurgence. During his tenure, Howard achieved back-to-back MEAC tournament championships in 2023 and 2024, marking their first NCAA tournament appearances since 1992 . In the 2022–23 season, the Bison finished with a 22–13 overall record and an 11–3 mark in conference play, clinching the MEAC regular-season title . They secured the tournament championship with a gritty 65–64 victory over Norfolk State.
Thornton's impact at Howard extended beyond team achievements. In his first season, he coached Charles Williams, the MEAC's all-time leading scorer, to All-MEAC honors. He also guided Wayne Bristol Jr. to the 2019–20 MEAC Rookie of the Year award. In the 2020–21 season, Thornton was instrumental in the recruitment and development of Makur Maker, who became the first five-star recruit to commit to an HBCU since ESPN began ranking prospects in 2007.
Thornton's return to Duke basketball brings valuable experience from his time at an HBCU, where he contributed to significant program milestones. His coaching journey, marked by player development and championship success, positions him as a promising addition to Scheyer's staff.
As Duke basketball continues to evolve under Scheyer's leadership, the inclusion of coaches like Thornton, who have demonstrated success at HBCUs, underscores the program's commitment to excellence.

Indianapolis Colts sign former Miami Dolphins All-Pro CB Xavien Howard

File Photo by Terry Schmitt/UPI | License Photo Aug. 18 (UPI) -- The Indianapolis Colts signed former Miami Dolphins All-Pro cornerback Xavien Howard, agent David Canter announced Monday. Howard last played in 2023. The eight-year veteran agreed to a one-year deal worth up to $5 million with the AFC South franchise. He will add depth to a Colts cornerbacks room that features Charvarius Ward, Kenny Moore II, Jaylon Jones and JuJu Brents, among others. Moore is dealing with a knee injury, while Jones and Brents have hamstring injuries. Howard entered the league as a second-round pick by the Dolphins in the 2016 NFL Draft. He was a four-time Pro Bowl selection through his first eight seasons. He earned a first-team All-Pro selection in 2020. The Dolphins signed Howard to a new five-year contract, which included $50.7 million in new money, in 2022. That pact brought the total value of his deal to $90 million. Howard sustained a Lisfranc injury to his left foot toward the end of the 2023-24 campaign. He was released after the season and sat out in 2024. Pro Football Focus gave Howard the 143rd-best defensive rating and 138th-best coverage grade among cornerbacks in 2016, his rookie campaign. He received the 67th-best defensive rating and 64th-best coverage grade among cornerbacks who were in for at least 50% of the maximum snaps played at the position in his second season. His play steadily improved over the next several seasons. Howard earned the 15th-best defensive grade and rated 18th in coverage in 2018. Howard received the second-best defensive rating and coverage grade in 2020. His performance declined in 2022 and 2023, when he received the 70th-best defensive rating and 71st coverage grade. Howard, who worked with current Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo for two seasons while he was Dolphins defensive backs coach, also drew interest from the Cincinnati Bengals and Dallas Cowboys. The Colts will face the Bengals in their preseason finale at 1 p.m. EDT Saturday in Cincinnati. They will host the Dolphins in their regular season opener Sept. 7 in Indianapolis.

Former Dolphins 4-time Pro Bowl CB joins the Colts

After a year out of the league, former Miami Dolphins star cornerback Xavien Howard is making a return with the Indianapolis Colts, according to his agent. Howard, 32, earned four trips to the Pro Bowl and First Team All-Pro honors in his eight seasons with the Dolphins. But the veteran's tenure ended with a couple of underwhelming seasons, including his 2023 campaign that was cut short by a foot injury. The Dolphins released Howard in March 2024, saving $18.5 million in cap space in the process. The cornerback also ruled out any chance of a reunion with the Dolphins. "That door is closed," Howard said. Not long after Howard and the Dolphins parted ways, reports surfaced that he was facing a revenge porn lawsuit for allegedly sending a boy sexually explicit images of his mother. That lawsuit is still pending. Howard appeared in 100 games over his eight years with the Dolphins and recorded 29 interceptions, four forced fumbles, and two sacks. Miami is set to face the Colts in Week 1 of the 2025 season. This article originally appeared on Dolphins Wire: Former Dolphins 4-time Pro Bowl CB Xavien Howard joins the Colts

Colts updated cornerback depth chart after Xavien Howard signing

After signing former All-Pro Xavien Howard, what does the Colts' cornerback depth chart now look like? In the midst of injuries, the Indianapolis Colts have bolstered their cornerback depth by signing veteran and former All-Pro Xavien Howard. So with this latest addition, what does the Colts' cornerback depth chart now look like? This is one position group for the Colts where the injuries continue to pile up. Justin Walley has been ruled out for the season with an ACL injury. JuJu Brents and Jaylon Jones have each missed most of training camp with hamstring injuries. In addition to that, Kenny Moore has missed time recently with a knee injury, while Johnathan Edwards exited Saturday's preseason game with a concussion. Coming into training camp, the starting cornerback role opposite of Charvarius Ward was up for grabs and it remains that way as the Colts have had to navigate injuries. Samuel Womack brings experience to the position. Alex Johnson had a strong showing in the Colts' preseason opener, while Edwards was the one who got the start in Saturday's game. Now Howard will be a part of that mix. Howard was a first-team All-Pro in 2020 and is a four-time Pro Bowler. Over his career, he has made 29 interceptions, has 95 pass deflections, and has a career completion rate allowed of 57.8 percent. Helping to elevate the play of this unit this season can be Lou Anarumo's more aggressive and disguise-heavy scheme, which can help keep quarterbacks guessing and put the defenders in a position to make plays on the ball.
