Shell-led LNG Canada ships first cargo to meet Asian demand
The first cargo from the plant in British Columbia was loaded on the vessel Gaslog Glasgow. Operator LNG Canada Development said on Monday (Jun 30) that the ship is destined for 'global markets'. Shell owns 40 per cent of the project.
LNG Canada is ramping up at a time when demand for gas is on the rise and buyers are focused on trading routes that avoid geopolitical flashpoints, particularly around the Persian Gulf. The plant at Kitimat on Canada's west coast is relatively close to customers in East Asia and comes on stream ahead of new export plants in the US and Qatar, which will not add substantial supplies to the market until next year at the earliest.
'We very much see it as a very strategic location on the Pacific coast,' Cederic Cremers, Shell's president of integrated gas, said. It 'connects very cost-competitive upstream gas from British Columbia to growing Asian demand,' he said.
A second production unit, known as a train, will start up later this year, and the 14 million-ton-a-year facility will reach full capacity in 2026, Cremers said. Once both trains are online, Canada would rank eighth in global LNG exports, behind Nigeria, data compiled by Bloomberg shows.
A further expansion is under discussion between Shell and its partners – Petroliam Nasional, PetroChina, Mitsubishi and Korea Gas – with a final investment decision likely next year, Cremers said.
Shell expects global LNG demand to grow 60 per cent by 2040, led by Asia. The company is a shareholder in plants around the world, including in Qatar and Australia, has a massive trading operation and operates a shipping network that manages about 10 per cent of the global LNG fleet.
The firm's LNG sales reached 66 million tonnes last year and are set to rise 4 to 5 per cent annually until the end of the decade, Cremers said. Between now and then, Shell expects to add 12 million tonnes a year of LNG capacity. BLOOMBERG

Onitsuka Tiger, the fashion brand reborn when Uma Thurman's The Bride wore its sneakers in Quentin Tarantino's 2003 movie, is enjoying record sales. Asics discontinued the brand for decades until the early 2000s, but post-Covid visitors can't get enough of the comfy, timeless trainers. Revenue in Japan has doubled in a year, with tourists accounting for almost all the surge. Onitsuka is by far Asics's highest-margin segment, with a new flagship store on the Champs-Elysees in Paris and plans for shops in the US. Shares are up eightfold in the past five years, helping its market capitalisation to recently pass US$20 billion. It is also more evidence that visitors to Japan are a growth driver. Complaints about overtourism get the headlines; online grumbles surround the 'shadow economy' of Asian travellers, said to extract more than they spend. But more important is the strategy of creating fans of the country, who connect with a part of the culture and want to spend on it at home. And from Muji to Mario and Hello Kitty to Uniqlo, these firms are having record quarters, helping propel the Nikkei 225 to a series of record highs. Consider Kitty's maker, Sanrio. While it still generates its largest chunk of revenue domestically, tourists now account for around 40 per cent of its product sales here (the data is trackable thanks to Japan's sales-tax exemption scheme). Shares are up more than 10 times from the 2019 level. Or Food & Life, the owner of conveyor-belt sushi leader Sushiro. Its restaurants in Tokyo and other city centres are thronged with travellers, and it has been expanding abroad. The company aims to have 320 stores overseas by fiscal 2026, from just 38 stores five years ago. The first Sushiro in mainland China opened last year, with reports of customers queuing for 10 hours for some chutoro. Ryohin Keikaku, meanwhile, now has more Muji locations outside Japan than at home, selling minimalist notebooks and no-brand cosmetics. Without simplifying Japan into ikigai and other reductive nonsense, these firms do have a common link. It's some combination of affordability, high quality and an aesthetic minimalism that taps into feelings consumers have long associated with 'Japan-ness.' (The same can be said about foreign brands that try to ape this look, such as the Chinese retailer Miniso). Companies that can take this and tap into newfound customers at home or overseas have significant upside, as the country seeks to attract 60 million tourists spending an annual US$100 billion by the end of the decade. The exemplar of this transformation is Fast Retailing, the operator of Uniqlo. It was once the poster child for how a deflation-beset country was turning to cheap fast fashion. 'Basic chic from Japan. But will it sell?' asked a New York Times headline in 2006, when Uniqlo opened its flagship outlet in the city; back in those days, 90 per cent of sales were in its home market. Since then, it has transformed itself into a minimalist yet iconic fashion brand, and overseas turnover overtook domestic in 2022. Of course, not every successful company needs to be minimalist. At the other end of the spectrum is retailer Pan Pacific International. Its Don Quijote stores are an assault on the senses, but it is a brand that tourists associate with the country – and in turn can generate higher margins than most discount retailers. It is expanding in Japan with even more shops to cater to visitors, with plans to more than double those sales to US$2.7 billion by 2035. That is before we even get into more iconic names such as Nintendo and the gaming and comic giants that benefit from the recent infatuation with Japan's soft power. If a traveller carries an Onitsuka Tiger bag, odds are the other hand holds one from Nintendo, Capcom or Sega Sammy's merchandise stores. More brands can tap into this, too: A recent collaboration between Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog and VF's Timberland shoes sold out in minutes. Souvenirs of a trip can be quickly discarded. But these brands are positioned to better stand the test of time – and turn Japan's soft power into hard profits. BLOOMBERG

HK water scandal: How distrust over China bottled water sparked a probe into govt contract

HONG KONG – A HK$53 million (S$8.7 million) contract to supply drinking water from mainland China to government offices in Hong Kong is at the centre of the latest scandal to rock the Asian financial hub. The government said late on Aug 20 that it had terminated all contracts associated with Xin Ding Xin Trade (XDX), after concluding that the firm could not fulfil the three-year deal to supply mainland-bottled water to Hong Kong's public offices. The authorities have arrested the married couple behind the Hong Kong-registered firm on suspicion that they gave officials false information to win the water contract. The police's preliminary probe also found the couple linked to a separate fraud case in 2022, local media reported. On Aug 21, the city's procurement chief Carlson Chan apologised for lapses on the government's part that caused it to overlook the fraudulent deal. But the incident – still unfolding as investigations continue – has cast a spotlight on the integrity of the government's procurement system. It has also brought to the fore a latent mistrust of mainland-origin food and drinks that still exists within some sectors of Hong Kong society, even as Hong Kongers have grown increasingly open to shopping and dining on the cheap in mainland China in recent years. XDX won the HK$52.9 million deal to supply water – which it said would be bottled on the mainland by the Guangzhou branch of Chinese manufacturer Robust Guangdong Drinking Water – to government offices on Hong Kong Island and the city's outlying islands. Another Hong Kong firm, Professional Trade International, would supply water from a mainland manufacturer from Dongguan, Dongwa Drinking Water, to offices in the New Territories, while AS Watson Group – owned by Hong Kong tycoon Li Ka Shing's CK Hutchison Holdings – would provide its locally distilled water to offices in Kowloon. The result of an open tender, the three three-year deals totalling HK$166 million were expected to save the government more than HK$16 million annually. Previously, it had a HK$143 million two-year agreement with AS Watson and Swire Coca-Cola to provide their locally produced water. The government has been under tremendous pressure to cut costs, as Hong Kong expects to incur a fourth straight year of deficit in the current fiscal year . XDX was separately also awarded another approximately HK$11 million worth of contracts to supply chemicals and data entry services to two other government departments. As the new water contracts took effect in late June, local media reported that the water produced by Robust had violated mainland safety standards six times between 2014 and 2017, and that water produced by Dongwa was in 2023 found to contain excessive levels of bacteria. The water contract awarded to Professional Trade, which sources its water from Dongwa, is still valid for now, as the water currently meets safety standards. However, the public chatter generated from the scepticism over the quality of the mainland-sourced water provided to the government offices sparked XDX's unravelling. Doubts over the water were further fuelled by worries among Hong Kongers who have, according to research studies over the past decades, long perceived mainland brands as being cheap and of inferior quality. Civil servants started expressing concerns about the water in their offices. Some ordered their own bottled water or brought their own from home. They also bombarded the Federation of Civil Service Unions with requests querying the water quality and rationale for the contract change, local media cited federation chief Leung Chau-ting as saying. The 170,000-strong civil service represents about 5 per cent of Hong Kong's workforce. It got bad enough that Chief Executive John Lee felt compelled to assure public officers that the water they were given was safe to drink and that the procurement process was sound. 'The government attaches great importance to the safety of our drinking water,' Mr Lee said on Aug 3. 'This is reflected in the strict requirements of our bidding and tendering process.' But his words were called into question barely a fortnight later, when XDX was found to have sourced its water from a different supplier in Dongguan rather than Guangzhou's Robust, as it had claimed. That is tantamount to fraud, as it contradicts the information it gave the government in its tender. This came to light after Robust, learning of reports questioning its safety standards, clarified that it had no existing business dealings with XDX. On Aug 16, the government said it would terminate the water deal with XDX and that the police were investigating the matter. It later cancelled all contracts it had with XDX. On Aug 17, the authorities arrested XDX director Lui Tsz-chung and his shareholder wife Chan Pik-lam on suspicion of fraud, and set up a task force to review the government's procurement processes within three months. Hong Kong's AS Watson will temporarily supply water to the affected offices. 'The whole incident is problematic; there are inadequacies (in the procurement process),' treasury chief Christopher Hui admitted on Aug 19. He revealed that XDX was the lowest bidder among the contenders, but insisted that price was not the sole deciding factor in awarding the water contracts. The South China Morning Post, however, cited an unnamed source as saying that the tender had listed price as its sole criterion, contrary to previous tenders, which also considered firms' governance, supply chain stability and other factors. The scandal raises questions about whether the government does the due diligence to vet bidders at its tenders for their background and product quality, lawmaker Doreen Kong said. Ms Kong, a solicitor by profession, told The Straits Times, however, that the main issue remained centred around whether officials had complied with procurement procedures. 'It doesn't matter whether the products came from mainland China. Right now, we are still waiting for the government to clarify some basic information,' she said. She called for answers from the government 'as soon as possible' rather than to wait for its review to conclude in three months. 'Even big institutions make mistakes,' she said. 'The key is admitting errors and addressing them... Timeliness is very important.' Hong Kong police, late on Aug 20, said their investigations found that the Dongguan manufacturer used by XDX held the necessary licences to produce bottled water in mainland China. But samples from its water seized from the Hong Kong government offices would be tested to assess if they met safety standards, they added. In a wry commentary posted on Facebook and widely shared among Hong Kongers, social commentator Fung Hei-kin remarked: 'When the news first broke of Xin Ding Xin's winning bid, we initially thought the water was from an old mainland brand we were unfamiliar with; as it turns out, it is in fact a counterfeit.' 'One can hardly fathom the trauma inflicted on Hong Kong's civil servants who have had to drink not just a mainland-branded product – but a bogus one, at that,' he added.

How to brag about your work without being cringe
[SINGAPORE] In the past two-and-a-half years I've been at thrive, I've posted on LinkedIn a grand total of… one time. For all the talk about self-promotion and building your personal brand, I've never felt comfortable tooting my own horn online. Frankly, it's cringe. But I don't fault my friends and colleagues who do it. I know it can be a powerful career tool, but the idea of bragging sharing one's achievements has always felt a little awkward. Still, I can't ignore what I've observed. Colleagues who share the stories they've written and talk about their work tend to get noticed more. Their posts spark new connections online, and when those connections have information to share or a story to pitch, it's them who come to mind first. Sometimes, the loudest person on social media may not even be the most experienced on your team. But because others see them actively contributing, or at least talking about it, their reputation grows. The first thing I noticed was that the posts that are the least cringe resonate the most are the ones that aren't framed as 'look at me' and, instead, 'look at this thing we built'. The focus isn't on the person (and his or her ego), but on the work itself. They frame their LinkedIn updates around the problem they were solving, the approach they took, and the outcome. Another thing I've noticed is that the people who do this best often bring others into the spotlight. When someone posts about a project and thanks the teammates who made it happen, it reads less like a humblebrag and more like a leader giving credit. 📅 Less is more I'm also learning that frequency matters. You don't need to flood people's feeds to be seen. A couple of updates every few weeks or months about meaningful projects or milestones carry more weight than daily posts about work that – let's be honest – you're literally paid to do. The same applies in the office. You don't have to shout about it every time you overcome a challenge, but remember them and keep a 'brag file' if you must – of client compliments, tough deadlines met, and tricky problems solved. They'll give you material to share in performance reviews, where you're fully encouraged to brandish all the things you've accomplished. 🧼 Professional social media hygiene Lastly, there's the mindset shift I'm still working on: seeing self-promotion not as self-indulgence but as professional hygiene. If no one knows what you're doing, they can't appreciate your contributions. And they certainly can't connect you with opportunities. Yes, you're raising your own profile. But in doing so, you're making it easier for people to find you when they need your skills. So here's my tentative plan. I'll start small, maybe sharing about a project I worked on or an event I'm participating in every few months on LinkedIn. These posts will be less 'what being stuck during an MRT breakdown taught me about resilience' and more 'here's the thing I did, how I did it, and the people who made it happen'. And if I'm feeling brave, I might even ask a question to invite engagement on my post. Will it feel awkward? Almost certainly.
