Woman, baby ‘locked' in home die in blaze as fire tears through Durban settlement
The blaze destroyed 100 dwellings at Kennedy Road informal settlement, displacing 150 residents.

A 25-year-old woman and an 18-month-old baby boy died in a fire that ravaged about 100 dwellings at the Kennedy Road informal settlement in Durban in the early hours of Saturday morning.
eThekwini fire department division commander Sifiso Mtshali said the suspected cause of the fire appeared to be open flames, potentially due to an unattended stove.

He said the fire, which broke out around midnight, had left about 150 people displaced.
He said it took firefighters several hours to extinguish the blaze, which had managed to spread rapidly within an hour.
'We had a team of 19 firefighters, with five trucks having responded to the scene. The fire was put out using three rescue appliances, we also had two water carriers on scene.'
According to residents who spoke to News24 on Saturday, the woman who died, Nonhle Mbangwa, had allegedly been locked in from the outside of her boyfriend's shack with the 18-month-old boy, and was unable to escape.
Nonhle's mother, Sindiswa Mbanga, said the toddler, Niphiwe Zulu, was not her grandson, but was the child of Nonhle's friend.
'No one seems to know who locked her in from the outside. Neighbours heard the cries of the child from inside. Nonhle had only been here for two days; she had been home in the Eastern Cape for two months. If she wasn't locked in, she might have been able to escape,' said Mbanga.
She said they had all been sitting around a fire on Friday night when Nonhle and the child's mother left for the shack.
'The child's mother left the child asleep with Nonhle and came back to sit around the fire with us.'
Gift of the Givers arrived at the scene around 04:30 to assist residents.
Bilall Jeewa, from the organisation, said: 'We have managed to get some tea and sandwiches for now because they have been up all night with children outside.'
Resident Vusi Doncobe said he lost everything in the fire.
'At first we tried to put out the fire ourselves, fetching water from communal taps using buckets but it was spreading too quickly.'
Last month, about 70 residents had to be rescued from the same informal settlement after a fire broke out at night. Around 40 shacks were destroyed in the blaze.

Wife in Devil's Den double homicide was fatally stabbed after trying to save husband
The wife who was killed in the double homicide at Devil's Den State Park in Arkansas went back to "help her husband" before the couple were both stabbed to death, authorities said Thursday. Officials said Clinton David Brink, 43, was the first to be attacked. His wife, Cristen Amanda Brink, 41, guided their two children to safety before returning in an attempt to help her husband, authorities said during a news conference. "The mother did not return all the way to the car with the kids," Maj. Stacie Rhoads with the Arizona State Police Criminal Investigation Division said. "We believe that the mother took them to safety and then returned to help her husband." The children were found about a half mile in the park. The couple has a third daughter; however, she was not on the hiking trip. Arkansas police have charged Andrew James McGann, a 28-year-old former schoolteacher, with two counts of capital murder. He was taken into police custody at a barbershop in Springdale following a five-day search and more than 500 tips from the public. Officials are still investigating a motive. McGann was being held without bond on Thursday, and Washington County prosecutor Brandon Carter said he did not know if McGann has a lawyer or will need a public defender, The Associated Press reported. Officials said Thursday that McGann indicated he did kill the couple. Rhoads said she "would call it an admission." Police confirmed that McGann's DNA was a positive match to the DNA that was suspected to belong to him at the scene, Arkansas State Police Col. Mike Hagar said. McGann suffered an injury during the attack that resulted in blood loss, which allowed police to establish a DNA profile, Hager said. Authorities also executed a search warrant at McGann's house in Springdale, roughly 30 miles north of the state's remote Devil's Den park, where articles were found "that are consistent with being involved in this particular crime," Hager said. McGann was a teacher in a small Oklahoma school district until May of this year, and then he resigned to take a job in another state. Officials said McGann had no criminal history and no known mental illness history. The couple was found dead on Saturday at Devil's Den State Park in Washington County, about 140 miles northwest of Little Rock, the state capital. The Brink family said the couple died "heroes protecting their little girls."

Memorial grows after 2-year-old killed, 13 hurt in crash at Portillo's in Oswego, Illinois
A memorial continued to grow Thursday outside the Portillo's restaurant in Oswego, Illinois, a day after a 2-year-old boy was killed and 13 other people were injured when a car crashed through the entrance. The restaurant remained closed on Thursday, and representatives didn't say when they plan to reopen as police continue their investigation into the deadly crash. Community members have been leaving flowers and stuffed animals at a growing memorial outside, honoring the life of the toddler who was killed. "As you can imagine, it was a chaotic scene," Oswego Police Chief Jason Bastin said. Around 2 p.m. Wednesday, a 2011 Lincoln MKZ crashed into the Portillo's on U.S. Route 34 in Oswego. The car ended up entirely inside the restaurant. Cell phone video posted on social media appeared to show the car had hit some of the tables inside. Police said a total of 14 people were injured. Eight were taken to hospitals, and six were treated at the scene. A 2-year-old boy who was inside the restaurant died at the hospital. The 50-year-old woman who was driving the car also was among those injured. It was unclear if any of the victims remained in the hospital on Thursday. Police said they are still working to gather all the information about the crash, including surveillance video, but said preliminarily the crash appears to be accidental. The Kane County Coroner's Office said they are not yet releasing the name of the 2-year-old who died. "We ask their privacy be respected as they grieve this unimaginable loss," Bastin said. Authorities said they're being careful about which details about the crash and investigation they release, out of respect for the family of the 2-year-old who was killed.

Neighbors Recall a Grim Day as a Mother Is Charged With Killing Her Sons
Nearly five years have passed, but the memories are still vivid. Word of an arrest last week in the death of newborn twins jolted neighbors in a Bronx apartment building back to the day the boys' bodies were discovered behind the property. Washing dishes on that fall afternoon, Gladys Lugo peered out of her first-floor window and noticed the building's superintendent pulling a rumpled bundle of blankets from the trash, she recalled. Another resident, Juan Santana, was walking his dogs down the block when he came across emergency workers, fighting back tears. No one suspected that Stephanie Castillo, 36, a former building resident who was arraigned Thursday on murder charges in the babies' deaths, had any role in the tragedy, several of her former neighbors said. 'Never in a million years,' said Jessica Ramos, who lived down the hall from Ms. Castillo. No one could recall even knowing that Ms. Castillo was pregnant. Prosecutors said that DNA evidence identified Ms. Castillo as the mother of the children. 'They would have been 5 this November. That's my daughter's age,' Ms. Ramos said of the twins, Zeke and Zane. Those were the names that police officers posthumously gave the boys after their remains were found on Nov. 9, 2020. 'We have a lot of questions,' she said. What prompted the killings, and why it took nearly five years to charge Ms. Castillo, remains unclear. Ms. Castillo had lived with family members on the fourth floor in the six-story prewar complex on College Avenue near Claremont Park, where many residents have known one another for at least a decade. Mr. Santana said he and his children often exchanged greetings with her when they came across her walking her dog. Neighbors ran into each other less frequently during the pandemic, when Ms. Castillo would have been carrying the twins. It was during that period of upheaval that investigators recovered the bodies of the boys in an alleyway, according to a criminal complaint that said that the infants died of blunt force trauma.
