Caldwell focuses on mental recovery after cup exit

BBC News14-02-2025
Exeter City manager Gary Caldwell has said he and his staff are focusing on the mental recovery of the team after their FA Cup heartbreak against Nottingham Forest on Tuesday. The Grecians - who played all of extra time with 10 men - lost 4-2 on penalties to a Forest side that is third in the Premier League. It was a loss that Caldwell feels needs to be recovered from as much psychologically as it does physically."The physical bit is, I think, fairly easy. We know recovery protocols, you know what to eat, you know what to sleep," he told BBC Radio Devon."For me, the mental and emotional aspect of coming down and then coming back up - that is the harder bit."We've got different things that we do cognitively, we try to get the players smiling, we try to change the energy within the group in different ways - some stupid ways."
Caldwell uses methods such as playing games and making the players dance to try to lift spirits and re-centre their focus for what is an important part of the season.Exeter travel to bottom-of-the-table Cambridge United on Saturday (12:30 GMT) just five points above the relegation zone.City have dropped to 18th place in the division having lost six of their past seven games and they have not won in League One since 26 December.Caldwell added of the loss to Forest: "I think that is important that we don't just put it aside and say: 'Right, physically you need to do this, this and this, do your job, get out of this building'."We have to connect with the players emotionally again, we have to build them back up for what's going to be a huge effort on Saturday."It's not just physical recovery, that's fairly easy, it's mental and emotional."We have to be at the very same levels we were at on Tuesday, because if we are then we're going to be a really difficult team to play against in League One."

Rangers 'miss out' on target amid £8m Wrexham transfer

Callum Doyle is said to be on the verge of sealing an £8m move to Wrexham from Manchester City. The Hollywood-owned Championship side are spending big this summer, having already secured the services of Nathan Broadhead from Ipswich for £10m. The Welsh side also bought Conor Coady - another former Gers target - from Leicester City for £2m. The Athletic reports that Rangers had shown interest in Doyle when it was made clear he'd be allowed to leave City. The 21-year-old defender came through the youth ranks at the Premier League giants, but has failed to make the grade for the first team. Doyle has enjoyed successful loan spells at the likes of Sunderland, Coventry and Norwich City in the Championship and League One. And that's exactly where his £8m transfer to Wrexham will see him ply his trade for at least the season ahead. Along with Rangers, Sheffield United were also credited with holding an interest in the defender.

Steve Bruce defends under fire Northern Ireland goalkeeper: ‘He's been made a scapegoat'

Blackpool manager Steve Bruce has defended goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell after a tough to start to life at the League One club for the Northern Ireland international. Peacock-Farrell is currently on loan at the Seasiders from Birmingham City. However, the ex-Leeds United star has conceded ten goals in his opening four games of the season. Former Manchester United skipper Bruce has urged Blackpool fans to support their new shot stopper. 'We need them to get behind the goalkeeper. He's our player for a year, and he hasn't played for a while - he'll get better with a little bit of support and a pat on the back now and again. 'I feel as if he's been made the scapegoat a little bit. I understand people's frustrations. 'He's an established goalkeeper, who if we get behind, and he gets himself well, then he's very capable, so let's try to encourage him. We've got to get behind him and show a little bit of support. I feel like I need to defend him. We've all had a bad couple of weeks. "We've analysed the goals. He was at fault for one here, but he's bore the brunt of the frustration of everybody. Everyone needs a pat on the back sometimes, and other times you need a rocket up the backside. Blackpool boss Steve Bruce 'I know Bailey will be okay, he's shown enough in training. Technically he's very good - you never lose your ability.' In League One, Blackpool lost their first game of the season 3-2 to Stevenage before going down 4-1 against Exeter City. Last Saturday, the Seasiders beat Huddersfield Town 3-2 at Bloomfield Road. The 28 year-old made his Northern Ireland debut in 2018 and has since earned an impressive 48 caps, although he has not been selected to play since last September's Nations League loss to Bulgaria. Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Pierce Charles has since established himself as Michael O'Neill's first choice between the sticks.
