3 Filipinos jailed, fined RM220,000 each for possessing Green Turtle parts

Published on: Mon, May 26, 2025 Text Size: KOTA MARUDU: Three Filipino nationals were sentenced today by the Kota Marudu court to one year in prison and fined RM220,000 each after being found guilty of possessing approximately 865 kilograms of green turtle (Chelonia mydas) parts stored in 39 sacks and 14 boxes. They were arrested by Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) officers on September 27, 2023, in Sabah waters near Simpang Mengayau, Kudat. The case was handed over to the Sabah Wildlife Department for further investigation and prosecution. They were charged under Section 41(1) of the Sabah Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional eight months of imprisonment. 'This success reflects the strong inter-agency cooperation and our continued commitment to protect endangered marine species, especially the green turtle,' said Sabah Wildlife Department Director Mohd. KUALA LUMPUR: TH Travel & Services Sdn Bhd (TH Travel) has denied it's connection with a fake programme known as "Program Haji Infaq Masyarakat" which allegedly offers TH Travel-managed haj packages priced at RM123,990 with an initial payment of as little as RM10,000. TH Travel, in a statement, said the company has never appointed any individual, external company or business entity to promote, manage or receive payment on behalf of TH Travel for any haj or umrah packages. The statement said that as a haj and umrah travel agency registered and fully regulated by the Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH), all payments related to registration and deposits for haj packages operated by TH Travel can only be made through TH's official account. "TH Travel does not offer subsidised or externally sponsored packages that require pilgrims to pay into unofficial or individual accounts. "TH Travel is not involved in any form of fundraising through cleaning companies, cake businesses or third party intermediaries," the statement said. TH Travel takes seriously the misuse of the company's name and reputation to deceive Muslims intending to perform the Haj pilgrimage. "We understand that a police report has been lodged and an investigation is underway by the authorities and TH Travel is prepared to provide full cooperation to the Royal Malaysia Police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in handling this case," the statement said. – BERNAMA

MMEA fends off aggressive Vietnamese fishing crew off Miri
The Vietnamese and Indonesian crews of two foreign fishing vessels have been detained by the MMEA for encroaching into Malaysian waters, the agency said. (MMEA pic) KUCHING : Crew members of a Vietnamese fishing boat took aggressive measures when a Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency patrol vessel caught the boat attempting to trespass into Malaysian waters in northern Sarawak yesterday. MMEA Miri zone director Khairol Anuar Saad said the crew of the Vietnamese boat refused to cooperate when they were confronted about 31 nautical miles northwest of Kuala Niah, Miri. 'They carried out dangerous manoeuvres, throwing hard and sharp objects at the MMEA enforcement personnel in rough seas, threatening the safety and lives of the security forces,' he said in a statement today. However, the situation was successfully controlled and the vessel, with three Vietnamese on board, was detained without any injuries to maritime personnel on duty. The MMEA had detained another vessel with five Indonesians on board northwest of Kuala Suai, Miri. Khairol said the two vessels and crew, aged between 25 and 53, were then taken to the Miri maritime zone complex in a journey which took nearly 18 hours due to rough weather over the long distance. The two boats and its fishing and navigation equipment, with a value of about RM3.3 million, were seized.
