Oliver Hermanus's ‘History of Sound' receives standing ovation at Cannes

TimesLIVE22-05-2025

South African filmmaker Oliver Hermanus's The History of Sound premiered on Wednesday at the 78th Cannes Film Festival in France to enormous acclaim.
The movie earned a nearly nine-minute standing ovation from the audience at the Palais des Festivals — many wiping away tears, captivated by the movie's poignant storytelling and raw emotion.
Adapted from Ben Shattuck's short story, the film stars Paul Mescal as Lionel and Josh O'Connor as David — two Boston Conservatory students in 1917 who embark on a journey through rural Maine to record American folk songs. Their shared passion for music blossoms into a romance set against the backdrop of World War 1.
Mescal and O'Connor's chemistry — expressed largely through glances, musical duets and subtle physicality — has been praised for their subtle, yet powerful nuances. Mescal, initially hesitant to play Lionel due to the role's complexity, ultimately found emotional depth through the film's delayed timeline — which allowed for the development of a deeper on-screen connection between the two lead actors as well as singing live on set.
Mescal and Hermanus, along with fellow cast members, greeted an endless stream of celebrity guests on the red carpet, including Ciara, Taraji P. Henson, Didi Stone, Barbara Palvin, Karolina Kurkova, Cara Delevingne, Naomi Campbell, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Coco Rocha and Edward Enninful. O'Connor could not attend due to filming commitments.

Rigged? Zoalize fails to make Miss World Top 40

South African pageant fans are crying foul after Zoalize Jansen van Rensburg failed to place in the Top 40 of the Miss World on Saturday, 31 May. The law student was a clear favourite in the run-up to the finale, and she even scooped the award for best designer for her gown inspired by SA's national flower, the Protea. Miss World – which took place in India – was won by Thailand's Opal Suchata. Despite being hailed as a strong contender, Zoalize van Rensburg's fans were shocked when she failed to make the Top 40 or quarter-finals. The first round saw over 100 contestants being whittled down to just 40 finalists – ten for each continental region. Africa's finalists were Botswana, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Namibia, Nigeria, Somalia, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Ultimately, Ethiopia's Hasset Dereje was crowned Miss World Africa. Opal Suchata later became the first Thai representative to be crowned Miss World. On social media, pageant fans were shocked that many of their favourites – particularly South Africa's Zoalize – had not made the cut. Pageant enthusiast @the_pageant_prince was shocked at South Africa's exclusion, posting,' Zoalize was loved and the winner on so many pages. And to not make the Top 40, what? It's just not possible!' Others like @ntsxki called out Miss World for essentially rigging the pageant, posting, 'They're eliminating the competition for their pre-determined winner'. Another, @meli0.2 added of Zoalize being snubbed: 'Daylight robbery'. While Miss World South Africa has not officially commented on Zoalize Jansen van Rensburg's early exit, franchise owner Carol Bouwer did repost a telling message from a pageant fan account. It read: 'Today's outcome was deeply disappointing. I know that many people are expecting an outrage from us. But I do hope that we will keep calm and accept the Miss World organisation's decision. 'Speaking ill will not only reflect on us bad as a country. But mess up chances for other representatives in the future'. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1 . Season 5 of 'Stranger Things' promises emotional finale

After a three-year wait, the final season of Stranger Things is almost here. Netflix officially confirmed at its 2025 TUDUM event that Season 5 will drop in three thrilling volumes this November and December, culminating in a New Year's Day finale. The first four episodes will premiere on Wednesday, 27 November 2025, at 3 am South African Standard Time (SAST). Volume 2, consisting of three episodes, will follow on Boxing Day, Friday, 26 December. The grand finale, Volume 3, will be available on Thursday, 1 January 2026. This will give South African viewers a dramatic start to the new year, according to Radio Times. Noah Schnapp, who plays Will Byers, teased, 'People are going to be truly devastated… there's not going to be a dry eye; it's going to be sad. But it is a great season and people will love it'. The stakes are higher than ever in Stranger Things . Hawkins scarred by the opening of the Rifts and the heroes united to find and kill Vecna, whose whereabouts remain unknown. The government's military quarantine and intensified hunt for Eleven force her into hiding. This sets the stage for a dark and powerful showdown. Returning cast members include fan favourites Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven), Finn Wolfhard (Mike), Sadie Sink (Max), and Winona Ryder (Joyce). They are joined alongside new additions like Linda Hamilton, who expressed excitement about joining the cast. 'I don't know how to be a fangirl and an actress at the same time. I'm gonna work on that'. The season will consist of eight episodes, described by Maya Hawke (Robin) as 'eight movies' in terms of scale and emotion. The release strategy, spreading episodes across three dates, mirrors Netflix's approach with other hits like The Witcher and Bridgerton , keeping viewers eagerly anticipating each instalment. As the countdown begins, the teaser trailer released at TUDUM hints at an epic and heart-wrenching finale. Ross Duffer, one of the show's creators, said, 'Everyone involved poured their hearts and souls into this, and we couldn't be prouder of what they've accomplished'. Hawkins is calling one last time, and this final journey through the Upside Down will be unforgettable. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
